Sensors for the food industry

This article presents an overview of the results of a five-year research project on sensors for the food industry in Japan. This project was a government-sponsered research programme involving the food industry and the instrumentation industry, coordinated by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The programme focussed on 17 food processing operations and quality control tasks, where the need for an on-line (or rapid at-line) measurement had been established. The instrument development work employed biosensors pH and gas sensors, optical-imaging devices, as well as near-infrared, microwave, ultrasound and mechanical resonance techniques, together with robotics and advanced data-processing techniques.     

Prognostic factors in muscle-invasive bladder cancer treated with radiotherapy: an immunohistochemical study

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic role of p53, Ki-67 and p21 for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer treated with curative intent by radiotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 131 patients (24 women and 107 men, median age 72 years, range 40-86) with transitional cell carcinoma (T2-T4) treated with external definitive pelvic radiotherapy between 1985 and 1994. Paraffin-embedded pretreatment biopsies from the patients were examined for the presence of p53, p21 and Ki-67, detected by immunohistochemistry, and related to tumour stage, grade and patient survival. RESULTS: The expression of p53 protein correlated positively with the detection of Ki-67 (P < 0.05) but did not correlate with p21. None of the immunohistochemical variables (p53, p21 or Ki-67) correlated with T category and only Ki-67 correlated with histological grade. Patients with > 5% p21 expression tended to live longer than those with < 5% (P = 0.09). In a multivariate analysis, the T category (T2/T3 vs. T4), histological grade (2 vs. 3) and p21 expression (< or = 5% vs. > 5%) were independent prognostic factors for overall survival. CONCLUSION: Further investigation is warranted in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer undergoing different types of treatment p21 seems to play an independent prognostic role in these patients, in addition to T category and grade.     

Structure and properties of refractories based on zirconia stabilized by gadolinium oxide

The structure and properties of solid solutions and the chemical compound Gd₂Zr₂O₇ in the Gd₂O₃ - ZrO₂ system are investigated. Sintering of the initial mixture is studied and the optimum concentration of the stabilizing additive is determined for the production of heat-resistant articles from granular mixtures based on ZrO₂ stabilized by Gd₂O₃ and fired at 1750°C. Frequency transfer function of an opto-pneumatic detector

An example of an opto-pneumatic detector's (OPD) frequency transfer function is presented for the development of an opto-pneumatic interface. The theoretical model is tested through experiments in the laboratory on a real OPD prototype. In this way many of the model's parameters are studied and evaluated, such as the dimensions of the gas chamber, the thickness of the absorbent body, and the load of the OPD. The results obtained are good and show the utility of the studies described here.     

Structures stabilizing the dimer interface on human 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase types 1 and 2 and human 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase and their homologs

Human 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-types 1 and 2 and human 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase belong to a large family of oxidoreductases that includes human dihydropteridine reductase and Streptomyces hydrogenans 20 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, for which 3D structures are available. Almost all of these enzymes are either dimers or tetramers. The dimer interface of rat dihydropteridine reductase consists of alpha-helices E and F from each monomer arranged in a four alpha-helix bundle [Varughese et al. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 6080-6084]. Alpha-helix F contains tyrosine-146 and lysine-150, residues that are highly conserved in this protein superfamily and have been proposed to be at the catalytic site. We have examined the dimer interface between alpha-helix F in human and rat dihydropteridine reductase and Streptomyces hydrogenans 20 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase as well as modeled 3D structures of steroid and prostaglandin dehydrogenases and homologs for stabilizing interactions. We find a site in the middle of alpha-helix F that stabilizes the dimer. This anchor is adjacent to conserved lysine on alpha-helix F. Our analysis suggests that sequence variation in the anchor may be important in substrate specificity.     

Detection of shorted-turns in the field winding ofturbine-generator rotors using novelty detectors-development and fieldtest

A method for detecting shorted windings in operational turbine-generators is described. The method is based on the traveling wave method described by El-Sharkawi, et. al. (1971). The method is extended in this paper to operational rotors by the application of a neural network feature extraction and novelty detection. The results of successful laboratory experiments are also reported     

Deformation of a rectangular plate half-embedded in an elastic base

We have investigated the deformation of a rectangular plate half-embedded in an elastic base and subjected to a mechanical load. Using the apparatus of generalized functions, the problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations which is solved by the boundary element method. Improving the accuracy of autotransformer and transformer alternating-current bridges

Variable-ratio and computational methods are described for improving the accuracy of autotransformer and transformer ac bridges that take into account and eliminate the additive and multiplicative components of the systematic error due to connecting leads and jumpers of the measuring circuit.
