Motion picture study of the temporal and geometric parameters of ethanol fixation of an isolated neuron

The work has employed a combination of microscopic observation, filming and computer processing of the data obtained. The proper time, rate and latent period of fixation with ethanol of different concentration were analyzed in the isolated surviving neuron. The temporal parameters of fixation were shown to depend on the size of the neuron and the concentration of the fixator. The authors describe the regularities and distinctions in changes of large and small diameters as well as the volumes in vegetative neurons of different size in frog. An attempt has been made to consider the fixation not only as a momentary action but also as a prolonged-in-time complex morphological process.     

Etiology and treatment of purulent meningitis in newborns

A microsyringe-needle assembly is described for use in aspiration and microinfusion procedures in the anterior chamber. Assets of a lancet pointed 30-gauge needle, surface anesthesia, and fine control of ocular pressure and aqueous humor volume are stressed. Use of the assembly for emergency treatment of acute congestive glaucoma, surgical paracentesis, aqueous sampling, and drug infusion are described. Drug volumes and concentrations must be maintained at levels which do not damage corneal endothelium.     

Clinical aspects, therapy and prevention of psychotic disorders in children and adolescents with cerebral residual-organic insufficiency

By means of a follow-up study the author examined 36 patients with cerebral residual insufficiency in the age group from 10-16 years. A psychotic and nonpsychotic variants of this form of pathology was detected. A psychotic decompensation may be evoked by a nonspecific exogenous factor. The clinical picture of a decompensation is characterized by affective disturbances and symptoms of changes consciousness. The treatment programme of the acute period of an exogenous-organic psychosis should include analgetics, desensitation, neuroleptical drugs, lithium carbonate, dehydration and cardio-vascular preparations.     

Effect of cataract on intraocular pressure

Cases of immature and mature cataract were selected to study normal values in relation to hypermature cataract. We observed that cases of hypermature cataract had a high intraocular tension which was associated with a high protein level and increase in the number of macrophages in the aqueous. We concluded that a phacolytic mechanism is responsible for a secondary rise of intraocular tension in cases of hypermature cataract.     

Effect of the prolonged use of streptomycin as well as streptomycin in combination with tubazid on the bioelectrical activity of the brain in experimental tuberculosis]

The effect of streptomycin used alone and in combination with tubazid on the brain electric activity was studied in chronic experiments on rabbits with tuberculosis. The electrocorticographical investigations showed that the antibacterial treatment lowered the spontaneous electric activity and reactive capacity of the cortex. It was evident from a narrow amplitude of the main rythm, coefficient and energy of synchronization on rythmic photostimulation and paroxysmal activity withing the theta range. With the account of the high therapeutic effect of the antibacterial treatment evident from minimum affection of the organs with tuberculosis, the above changes in the electrocorticogrammes should be attributed to the neurotropic effect of the drug and not to tuberculosis intoxication.     

Pathology of the lymphopharyngeal ring in children

The condition of tonsils was studied in 9612 children of organized establishments aged up to 14 years. Diseases of the tonsils were found in 34.8% cases (simple hyperplasia in 35.6%, chronic tonsillitis in 64.4% cases). In 63.3% cases chronic tonsillitis was accompanied by tonsillar hypertrophy. In 84% cases it proceeded with signs of tonsillogenous intoxication. Lymphopharyngeal ring pathology was more often than not found in 7-14 year old children (44.6%). The authors discuss problems of pathogenesis, clinical course, diagnostics and treatment of lymphopharyngeal ring pathology in children. They suppose that tonsillar pathology in children is to be considered as a systemic disease, the leading role in its pathogenesis seems to belong to the total lymphoid system of the organism. Proceeding from the fact that the tonsils in children are of great functional importance as they take part in the formation of local and general defensive immunologic reactions of the organism, the authors consider that in children it is necessary to give preference to conservative methods in the treatment of chronic tonsillitis.     

Experimental epidural and conduction anesthesia with azacaine

We present the results of the in vitro action of alpha and gamma interferons and of Intacglobin and Igegam against the 47/93/IPK (Coxsackie A9) strain isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with epidemic neuropathy. The in vitro studies showed that the two interferons inhibited the replication of this agent; they also showed the presence of antibodies to it in the Intacglobin and Igegam. The results attained demonstrated that the use of these compounds could be effective for the treatment of this entity.
