Currently, the only viable option for a global precipitation product is the merger of several precipitation products from different modalities. In this article, we develop a linear merging methodology based on spatiotemporal regression. Four highresolution precipitation products (HRPPs), obtained through methods including the Climate Prediction Center's Morphing (CMORPH), Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-Based Auto-Estimator (GOES-AE), GOES-Based Hydro-Estimator (GOES-HE) and Self-Calibrating Multivariate Precipitation Retrieval (SCAMPR) algorithms, are used in this study. The merged data are evaluated against the Arkansas Red Basin River Forecast Center's (ABRFC's) ground-based rainfall product. The evaluation is performed using the Heidke skill score (HSS) for four seasons, from summer 2007 to spring 2008, and for two different rainfall detection thresholds. It is shown that the merged data outperform all the other products in seven out of eight cases. A key innovation of this machine learning method is that only 6% of the validation data are used for the initial training. The sensitivity of the algorithm to location, distribution of training data, selection of input data sets and seasons is also analysed and presented.  相似文献

In this paper a hierarchical approach is taken to classify temporal sequences of images of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), using Iberia as an example. Iberia is a convenient area of study because it has a high environmental diversity and very strong environmental gradients, and yet a reduced size at the spatial resolution of current global data-sets. An Iberian subset of a global temporal series of AVHRR-NDVI images facilitates test and validation of different approaches while producing results that are likely to be valid over much larger areas. Our hierarchical clustering approach yields maps with nested legends. We compare these maps to a digitized map of potential natural vegetation, which reveals a clear bioclimatic control. The highest level of the hierarchical classification separates vegetation with a Summer peak of NDVI from vegetation with a Spring peak of NDVI. Such a discontinuity corresponds to the discontinuity between Atlantic and Submediterranean vegetation in the vegetation map. Lower levels in the hierarchical classification produce maps of increasing complexity but that keep a high degree of spatial continuity. A correspondence analysis between a 16-classes NDVI map and the digitized map of potential vegetation produces an ordination that is bioclimatically coherent. According to the known characteristics of the potential vegetation units, the two first correspondence axes can be interpreted, respectively, as water availability and temperature. These results are a consequence of the temporal NDVI series being an accurate signal of vegetative phenology, which in turn is a fundamental vegetation property. A comparison of our results with several global land cover digital maps by means of the Wilk's ratio indicates that the global maps do not produce an appropriate partition of the region in terms of the NDVI temporal course. We conclude that the analysis of temporal series of NDVI yield relevant ecological information at finer scales and with more detailed legends that had not been attempted until now, and, therefore, are suitable for regional scale applications. Our results also indicate the interest of a bioclimatic analysis and modeling of the NDVI signatures for their correct ecological understanding. Maps at a global scale can be produced based on such an understanding.  相似文献

Biphasic bioceramics have been widely indicated for bone reconstruction; however, the real gain in bone mass due to the presence of such biomaterials has not been established yet nor the advantages of its association with platelet concentrate. This study aims at quantifying the volume of bone matrix, osteoblasts, osteocytes, blood vessels and adipose tissue after the application of a biphasic bioceramics composed of 65% hydroxyapatite and 35% β-tricalcium phosphate. Critical-size bone defects were produced in rabbit femora and reconstructed with bioceramics only, with bioceramics combined with platelet concentrate, with platelet concentrate alone, and with no treatment (blood clot). The quantitative evaluation was performed on histological sections using histomorphometry. Our data provide original evidence that consolidates the indication of bioceramics for clinical bone loss reconstruction. The application of biphasic bioceramics alone led to major bone mass gain and was followed by its association with platelet concentrate. On the other hand, platelet concentrate can contribute to the augmentation and maintenance of the adipose tissue, representing a new field for future applications in plastic surgery.  相似文献

An algorithm has been developed to create structural models for amorphous carbons using Monte Carlo simulations in the canonical ensemble. The simulation method used follows the experimental preparation of nanoporous carbons (NPC) by pyrolysis from polyfurfuryl alcohol as a guideline. The resulting structure exhibits properties that compare favorably to those observed experimentally for real NPCs. These atomistic NPC models are approaching a realistic representation of NPCs used for gas separations and as such, are being used to study the diffusion of small gas molecules in these materials. Limitations of the method and possible improvements are discussed.  相似文献

Four hundred twenty-four students in Grades 6 through 12 and 1 parent of each completed a questionnaire concerning student participation in 5 types of after-school activities: homework, television viewing, extracurricular activities, other types of structured after-school groups, and jobs. Student standardized achievement test scores and class grades were also obtained. After-school activities contributed significantly to the prediction of achievement even after the student's gender, grade level, ethnicity, free-lunch eligibility, and level of adult supervision after school were statistically controlled. Generally, more time in extracurricular activities and other structured groups and less time in jobs and television viewing were associated with higher test scores and class grades. More time on homework was associated with better grades. The joint effects of all 5 after-school activities nearly doubled the predictive ability of any single activity. Linear switched reluctance motors (LSRMs) for the primary propulsion of a ship elevator is proposed and investigated for the first time in this paper. To achieve the stated objective, a new type of LSRM is proposed with twin stators and a translator between them with no back iron in the translator. The proposed configuration of the LSRM is designed, simulated, analyzed, compared with traditional LSRMs, and verified by experimental measurements. The number of LSRM propulsion subsystems required is studied with a view to minimize their weights and an optimization study for that purpose is developed. Unique placement of the LSRM propulsion systems on the elevator is presented. The propulsion force is generated using one phase or multiphase excitation. To reduce propulsion force pulsations, a major requirement in elevators, controlled multiphase excitation using one of the known force distribution functions (FDF) is an acceptable solution. In this paper, it is proved that the currently available FDFs are able to reduce the force pulsations but are not able to meet the peak force command for the system. Consequently, the velocity and position control do not meet even the elementary performance requirements any more. A new FDF is proposed in this paper and presented to overcome the problem caused by a conventional FDF. The control system with the proposed FDF is derived and integrated into velocity and position controllers. Extensive dynamic simulation and experimental verification of the proposed LSRM with the novel FDF is proved to give superior performance in this paper. Such high performance capable of meeting vertical elevator applications is demonstrated.  相似文献

PbO2 has been identified as an important scale in some distribution systems that historically use lead service lines and free chlorine for maintaining a disinfectant residual. The stability of this highly insoluble scale with respect to its reductive dissolution may play an important role in lead release into drinking water. In this study, we investigated the release of lead from a commercially available PbO2 in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) using a hydrophobic acid extracted from the Iowa River. Experiments were conducted using synthetic solutions with different NOM concentrations, solution pH, and NOM samples with different levels of prechlorination. It was found that release of lead from PbO2 occurred both in solutions with and without NOM, and the extent of lead release increased with increasing NOM concentration and decreasing pH value. Furthermore, the released lead was Pb(II) and not particulate PbO2 conclusively showing that reductive dissolution occurred. Prechlorination of NOM reduced the rate of lead release. Our results indicate that PbO2 can be reduced both by water and NOM. Characterization of final solid phases by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are also presented.  相似文献

Electronic and photonic fiber devices that can sustain large elastic deformation are becoming key components in a variety of fields ranging from healthcare to robotics and wearable devices. The fabrication of highly elastic and functional fibers remains however challenging, which is limiting their technological developments. Simple and scalable fiber‐processing techniques to continuously codraw different materials within a polymeric structure constitute an ideal platform to realize functional fibers and devices. Despite decades of research however, elastomeric materials with the proper rheological attributes for multimaterial fiber processing cannot be identified. Here, the thermal drawing of hundreds‐of‐meters long multimaterial optical and electronic fibers and devices that can sustain up to 500% elastic deformation is demonstrated. From a rheological and microstructure analysis, thermoplastic elastomers that can be thermally drawn at high viscosities (above 103 Pa s), allowing the encapsulation of a variety of microstructured, soft, and rigid materials are identified. Using this scalable approach, fiber devices combining high performance, extreme elasticity, and unprecedented functionalities, allowing novel applications in smart textiles, robotics, or medical implants, are demonstrated.  相似文献

This paper analyzes Japan's national power generation strategy with a view to explaining Japan's phlegmatic approach to wind energy development. The analysis concludes that Japan's current power generation strategy is not optimized to achieve the government's three strategic energy objectives of simultaneously enhancing economic security, national energy security and environmental security (3Es). To achieve long-run energy sustainability, Japan needs to strive to phase out nuclear power, which is the centerpiece of its current power generation strategy. The analysis concludes by offering four suggestions for a sustainable 3E power generation strategy: (1) internalize all external costs associated with power generation technologies in order to level the economic playing field, (2) increase feed-in mandates for renewable energy to 20%, (3) fully liberalize the power generation industry and (4) intensify R&D in energy storage technologies to support intermittent renewable technologies.  相似文献
