Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) have been demonstrated to interact with lipids and modulate the physical state of membranes across species. Through these interactions, sHSPs contribute to the maintenance of membrane integrity. HSPB1 is a major sHSP in mammals, but its lipid interaction profile has so far been unexplored. In this study, we characterized the interaction between HSPB1 and phospholipids. HSPB1 not only associated with membranes via membrane-forming lipids, but also showed a strong affinity towards highly fluid membranes. It participated in the modulation of the physical properties of the interacting membranes by altering rotational and lateral lipid mobility. In addition, the in vivo expression of HSPB1 greatly affected the phase behavior of the plasma membrane under membrane fluidizing stress conditions. In light of our current findings, we propose a new function for HSPB1 as a membrane chaperone.  相似文献

An efficient synthetic access to new cationic porphyrin-bipyridine iridium(III) bis-cyclometalated complexes was developed. These porphyrins bearing arylbipyridine moieties at β-pyrrolic positions coordinated with iridium(III), and the corresponding Zn(II) porphyrin complexes were spectroscopically, electrochemically, and electronically characterized. The features displayed by the new cyclometalated porphyrin-bipyridine iridium(III) complexes, namely photoinduced electron transfer process (PET), and a remarkable efficiency to generate 1O2, allowing us to envisage new challenges and opportunities for their applications in several fields, such as photo(catalysis) and photodynamic therapies.  相似文献

Total health care expenses have risen significantly in the United States. There are many factors and variables that can impact hospital operating efficiencies. Among them, engaging a distributor or group purchasing organization (GPO) is one method to influence efficiency throughout the entire supply chain. This research investigates the impact of distributors and GPOs on hospital efficiency and profitability. The data from the 2015 American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Hospital Survey of which 6251 hospitals participated are used. These hospitals were separated by those who purchased supplies through a distributor and those who did not. Likewise, the same was performed for those hospitals that used GPO and those that did not. This study employs DEA-Solver software to develop four types of bilateral DEA models. The results of the DEA model use a ranking variable (rank sum) to rank the variables within the two groups (distributor and no distributor) to determine if there is a significant difference between distributor and nondistributor. The same is performed for GPO and non-GPO. We examined the impact of the several control variables on hospital efficiency for distributors and GPOs. Results indicate that the control variables (region, education, profit/nonprofit, government/nongovernment, and system/nonsystem) made a significant difference for hospitals that used a distributor and a GPO. Lessons and implications are discussed for future research issues, such as quality of patient care and a frontier production function.  相似文献

Health concerns have driven the production of antimicrobial materials aimed at controlling the spread of diseases. Styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS)-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) incorporated with titanium dioxide (TiO2), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)3) are one way to produce antimicrobial polymers. The purpose of this study is to characterise SEBS-based TPE compounds incorporated with TiO2, Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3. The mechanical, optical and antimicrobial characteristics of TPE samples were investigated. The differences between the means in the mechanical properties of all loaded materials were not significant. The optical results show a reduction in polymer transparency, with total opacity after the incorporation of TiO2. Among the additives tested, TiO2 offered the best antimicrobial action. There was no fungal growth on the loaded TPE surface. The incorporation of TiO2 in SEBS-based TPE materials may be used in the industry to develop antimicrobial products, which, when complemented with additional disinfection treatments, can contribute to public health.  相似文献

Astrocytes, as the most abundant glial cells in the central nervous system, are tightly integrated into neural networks and participate in numerous aspects of brain physiology and pathology. They are the main homeostatic cells in the central nervous system, and the loss of astrocyte physiological functions and/or gain of pro-inflammatory functions, due to their reactivation or cellular senescence, can have profound impacts on the surrounding microenvironment with pathological outcomes. Although the importance of astrocytes is generally recognized, and both senescence and reactive astrogliosis have been extensively reviewed independently, there are only a few comparative overviews of these complex processes. In this review, we summarize the latest data regarding astrocyte reactivation and senescence, and outline similarities and differences between these phenotypes from morphological, functional, and molecular points of view. A special focus has been given to neurodegenerative diseases, where these phenotypic alternations of astrocytes are significantly implicated. We also summarize current perspectives regarding new advances in model systems based on astrocytes as well as data pointing to these glial cells as potential therapeutic targets.  相似文献

Sotolon and the heterocyclic acetals of glycerol are known as potential aging and oxidation markers in fortified wines such as Madeira, Port, and Sherry. Thus, determining the evolution of these compounds under different oxidative aging conditions is important for fortified wine quality purposes. This study proposes a new methodology based on a miniaturized emulsification extraction followed by GC–MS/SIM, which was developed and optimized to follow the formation of sotolon and heterocyclic acetals in fortified wines that were submitted to traditional accelerated aging and micro-oxygenation. The optimization was achieved by means of a mixed-level factorial design, considering 3 factors: sample volume, extractant volume, and concentrated extract volume, by performing 19 experiments in duplicate. The extraction was optimized using 8 mL of wine sample, 5 mL of dichloromethane, concentrating the extract up to 10-fold. The method performance was evaluated for sotolon, using a matrix-matched calibration between 10 and 2000 μg/L. The selectivity was confirmed through the analysis of real samples. The methodology showed good linearity (R2?=?0.999), high sensitivity (LOQ?=?6.8 μg/L), recovery about 105%, and good precision (less than 8 and 9%, evaluated by the variation of intra- and inter-day measurements, respectively). This is the first methodology that revealed to be an excellent tool to simultaneously follow the formation of sotolon and heterocyclic acetals in Madeira wines, using an inexpensive, simple, efficient, and effective experimental layout. Indeed, it was shown that traditional accelerated aging and micro-oxygenation have impact on the formation of such molecules.  相似文献

Styrene‐butylene/ethylene‐styrene‐based thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are polymers with soft touch properties that are widely used for manufacturing devices that involve hand contact. However, when contaminated with microorganisms these products can contribute to spreading diseases. The incorporation of antibacterial additives can help maintain low bacteria counts. This work evaluated the antibacterial action of TPE loaded with silver ions and silver nanoparticles. The additives nanosilver on fumed silica (NpAg_silica), silver phosphate glass (Ag+_phosphate), and bentonite organomodified with silver (Ag+_bentonite) were added to the TPE formulation. The compounds were evaluated for tensile and thermal properties and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). All the additives eliminated over 90% of E. coli, but only NpAg_silica killed more than 80% of S. aureus population. The better effect of NpAg_silica was attributed to the additive's high specific surface area, which promoted greater contact with bacteria cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The concept behind photodynamic therapy (PDT) is being successfully applied in different biomedical contexts such as cancer diseases, inactivation of microorganisms and, more recently, to improve wound healing and tissue regeneration. The effectiveness of PDT in skin treatments is associated with the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by a photosensitizer (PS), which acts as a “double agent”. The release of ROS must be high enough to prevent microbial growth and, simultaneously, to accelerate the immune system response by recruiting important regenerative agents to the wound site. The growing interest in this subject is reflected by the increasing number of studies concerning the optimization of relevant experimental parameters for wound healing via PDT, namely, light features, the structure and concentration of the PS, and the wound type and location. Considering the importance of developing PSs with suitable features for this emergent topic concerning skin wound healing, in this review, a special focus on the achievements attained for each PS class, namely, of the non-porphyrinoid type, is given.  相似文献

Influence of processing methods, in terms of comparing compression and injection moldings, on the rheological behavior of polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) blends and PC/ABS/glass fibers composites is presented. Blend compositions and fiber content are considered as material variables. For blends, the effect of the processing route on the viscoelastic functions is evident only for low shearing frequencies. Injection molding created morphology with cocontinuous character, while compression molded blends have “relaxed” structure, where dispersed phase domains are several times larger than in injection molded ones. The glass fiber reinforcement led to the significant differences in viscoelastic properties of composites processed by injection and compression molding. Injected composites have both moduli always higher than compression molded. Also, fiber lengths are reduced more for compressing molding. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of control strategies for diseases transmitted by the Aedes albopictus mosquito (the “Asian tiger”) and spread by human travel. This mosquito, which has become established in southern Europe in recent years, is a vector for many diseases. For example, an outbreak of chikungunya, hitherto regarded as a tropical disease, occurred in Italy in 2007. The initial case was a person who had acquired the disease overseas. Mosquito-borne infections can only be spread over large distances by human travel, as the flight range of mosquitos is very limited. A system dynamics model has been developed which describes the mosquito life-cycle, the natural history of mosquito-borne disease in humans and mosquitos, and human behaviour including travel. Potential disease control strategies include chemical treatments to destroy either larvae or adult mosquitos, campaigns to influence human behaviour, or quarantine of infectious people. In this paper, which is based on the Italian chikungunya outbreak, this model is used to study and compare the effect of different control strategies, where the various actions are combined in different ways and implemented for different time periods.  相似文献
