Phase transformations in highly disperse powders during their rapid heating and cooling

Phase transformations in particles of ultrafine powders of graphite, hexagonal boron nitride, and quartz during rapid heating and cooling by passage through a laser beam were investigated. A continuous infrared laser with a wavelength of 10.6 μm was used as a heat source through which the powders were recycled several times. Methods of concentrating the product phases are described. Particles of diamond, carbides, cubic boron nitride, koesite and stishovite were obtained in the mixed products.

Analytic approach to the computation of the temperature distribution in multilayer structures under heating by cw scanning laser radiation

By using integral transform methods, an approach is developed to the solution of a problem on the temprature distribution in multilayer structures heated by cw scanning laser radiation, with phase transitions in the layers taken into account.Translated from Inzhenerno-Fizicheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 53, No. 6, pp. 1000–1010, December, 1987.     

Expectations about counseling in Yucatán, Mexico: Toward a "Mexican psychology."

Conducted a study of client expectations of psychological services in Yucatán, Mexico, under the sponsorship of a grant from the Organization of American States. The Expectations about Counseling–Brief form (EAC-B) questionnaire was translated and administered to 488 subjects across age, sex, and experience with psychological services. Subsequent analyses supported the reliability and robustness of the Spanish EAC-B, with factor structure similar to the EAC-B in English. Some relation was found among age, sex, prior counseling experience, and expectations about counseling. Implications of these data for future research and comparison with U.S. subjects are discussed. 3-D boundary element method for cracks in a plate

New fundamental solutions which automatically satisfy boundary conditions at the interfaces of an elastic plate perfectly bonded to two elastic halfspaces are implemented in a 3-D boundary element method (BEM) for crack problems. The BEM features a new integration scheme for highly singular kernels. The capability is achieved through a part analytic and part numerical integration procedure, such that the analytic part of the integration is similar for all slip/opening variations, ‘Part-through’ elliptic cracks in an elastic plate with traction-free surfaces are analysed and the stress intensity factor (SIF) values along the crack front are found to compare favourably with widely accepted numerically obtained SIF results by Raju and Newman.¹     

Two-fluid large-eddy simulation approach for particle-laden turbulent flows

In this paper, effects of particles on the subgrid scales of turbulence are properly accounted for during the modeling of subgrid scale stresses in the large-eddy simulation (LES) of fluid phase. In doing so, we propose closed filtered kinetic equations for phase space density of the particle. The various moments of these equations give the `fluid' equations which can be considered as the LES equations for the particle phase. The influence of subgrid scales motion on the particles is included in these `fluid' equations.
