The end of the Cold War has called into question the activities of the national laboratories and, more generally, the level of support now given to federal intramural research in the United States. This paper seeks to analyze the potential role of the laboratories, with particular attention to the possibility, on the one hand, of integrating private technology development into the laboratory's menu of activities and, on the other hand, of outsourcing traditional mission activities. We review the economic efficiency arguments for intramural research and the political conditions that are likely to constrain the activities of the laboratories, and analyze the early history of programs intended to promote new technology via cooperative agreements between the laboratories and private industry. Our analysis suggests that the laboratories are likely to shrink considerably in size, and that the federal government faces a significant problem in deciding how to organize a downsizing of the federal research establishment.  相似文献

Stepwise linear discrimination was used to analyze risk factors in 431 consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography to determine which variables were most closely associated with coronary artery disease. Twenty-one risk factors were considered: total plasma cholesterol and triglycerides; the cholesterol and triglyceride content of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL); and the percentage of total cholesterol and triglycerides in each fraction. Age, smoking history, family history, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and relative weight were also considered. Coronary artery disease was assessed using three standard grading scores. There were significant differences in risk factors between males and females. In males, LDL cholesterol and age were selected by multivariate analysis. In females, the ratio of HDL cholesterol to total cholesterol, as well as relative weight, family history, age and smoking were selected. The discriminating value of HDL cholesterol as the percentage of total cholesterol was significantly greater than that of HDL cholesterol itself. Despite highly significant associations between risk factors and the presence of coronary artery disease, the discrimination did not provide sufficient separation of the groups to give results that are useful diagnostically in individual patients.  相似文献

A system utilizing the Doppler shift of monochromatic laser light has been developed to measure blood flow in skin. Light from a low power (S mW) He-Ne laser is coupled into a quartz fiber and transmitted to the skin. This light is reflected from both the nonmoving tissues (reference beam) and moving red blood cells (Doppler shifted beam), received by a plastic fiber, and transmitted back to a photodiode where optical heterodyning occurs. The heterodyned output signal, which is proportional to the Doppler shift frequency, is amplified and both RMS and dc values obtained. The RMS value is weighted against the backscattered light intensity using the measured dc value as an index of total received power. This is used as the output flow velocity value.  相似文献

Hybridization using kDNA and rDNA sequences as probes was performed to study phylogenetic relatedness of different species of trypanosomatids. Using this approach, we identified five organisms which had been classified as Phytomonas and Herpetomonas that were more closely correlated to each other phylogenetically than to any other species or isolates from either genera. These findings raise doubts about the validity of the current classification of Trypanosomatidae. Finally, we demonstrated the usefulness of kDNA sequences as an alternative to genomic sequences in obtaining phylogenetic information on trypanosomatids.  相似文献
