Production of hydrogen peroxide by alveolar macrophages from rats exposed to subacute and chronic hypoxia

The optimum age for surgical closure of cleft palate remains an unresolved question, despite the fact that many clinicians have studied the issue since the 1930s. This article reviews the debate as it has taken shape over the last several decades, with a prospective view toward how standards of practice may evolve in the foreseeable future.     

A Vibrating-Wire Viscometer for Dilute and Dense Gases

The vibrating-wire technique has been applied to design a viscometer for precise measurements on gases in the temperature range 25 to 250°C at pressures from 0.1 to 40 MPa employing two Chromel wires with different radii. The technique has been improved to avoid the influence of higher harmonic modes and the degeneracy of perpendicular modes, to eliminate electromagnetic noise from the signal, and to minimize the influence of the magnetic damping. The decrement and frequency of the oscillation have to be determined by extrapolation to zero displacement, and wires with a perfectly smooth surface are needed to meet the requirements of the measuring theory. The viscosity measurements are characterized by a precision of ±0.05% at ambient temperature. Considering the uncertainty of the reference data used for calibration, the total uncertainty amounts to ±0.2% within the calibrated range of the boundary-layer thickness.     

Pain and suffering: A reappraisal.

In clinical settings concerned with pain problems, the concepts of pain and suffering are often confounded. This article draws distinctions between the two and between suffering and disability. A series of studies is reviewed bearing on these distinctions. Implications for evaluation and management of clinical pain are then discussed. Nonlinear boundary-value problem for cylindrical corona discharge

Contents Closed-form (one-dimensional) solutions are derived for the electric fieldE(r) and potentialV(r) in a positive ion discharge between a stressed wire anode atr=a and a coaxial cylinder cathode atr=b. It is shown that this system sustains two different corona discharge modes, namely with radially (i) decreasing (k<1) and (ii) increasing (k>1) electric field strengthE(r), wherek=E _I /E _a is the crucial discharge number. E_I = (I/2₀)^1/2 [V/m] is given in terms of the discharge currentI [A/m], whereas the electric fieldE _a [V/m] at the anode depends on currentI and ion temperatureT _i at the cathode. The physical properties of these discharge modes are discussed analytically.

Nichtlineares Randwertproblem der zylindrischen Korona-Entladung

Übersicht Geschlossene (eindimensionale) Lösungen werden abgeleitet für das elektrische FeldE(r) und PotentialV(r) in einer positiven Ionen-Entladung zwischen einer Hochspannungsanode mit Radiusr=a und einer koaxialen Zylinderkathode mit Radiusr=b. Es wird gezeigt, daß in diesem System zwei verschiedene Typen von Korona-Entladungen existieren können, nämlich mit radial (i) abnehmender (k<1) und (ii) zunehmender (k>1) elektrischer Feldstärke, wobeik=E _I /E _a der kritische Entladungsparameter ist. E_I = (I/2₀)^1/2 [V/m] ist durch den EntladungsstromI [A/m], während das elektrische FeldE _a [V/m] an der Anode durch StromI und IonentemperaturT _i an der Kathode bestimmt ist. Die physikalischen Eigenschaften dieser Entladungstypen werden analytisch diskutiert.
