Point-to-point wave propagation through an intermediate layer of random anisotropic irregularities: Phase and amplitude correlation functions

The problem of wave propagation from a point source to a point of observation through an intermediate slab containing random weak dielectric irregularities is considered. Under the assumption that the spatial correlation of the permittivity is a Gaussian one with correlation distances much larger than the wavelength, the phase and amplitude auto- and cross-correlations are computed for any distance of source and receiver to the slab. Comparison is made to the analyses by Karavainikov and Yeh which are shown to be limiting cases of the present work.     

Effects of a specific ecutaneous cold stimulus on single motor unit activity of medial gastrocnemium muscle in man

Fragmentation reactions of the biologically important N6-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)adenyl moiety have been re-examined with the aid of systematic deuterium labeling in the sidechain and by examination of the 1- and 7-deazanucleoside analogs. It is concluded that the diagnostic reactions which involve expulsion of C3H7 proceed predominantly by ring closure from the sidechain double bond to N-1 (ion a). Base-containing ions m/e 135 and 148 were confirmed to arise mainly by rearrangement of hydrogen from the methyl terminus to N6 and simple cleavage, respectively, but with significant contribution from other pathways involving transfer of sidechain hydrogens to the base.     

Porphyria cutanea tarda after uptake of lead--a case contribution to the etiology

It is reported on a case of porphyria cutanea tarda. With the exception of a low risk lead exposure during work no etiological factor could be revealed. Body deposits of lead were established by means of Ca-EDTA provocation. After cessation of exposure which was suggested to be the cause the state of health markedly improved. Thus, compensation due to occupational disease was recommended to workers insurance.     

Effects of urban residence on interpersonal trust and helping behavior.

Existing research suggested the hypothesis that urban residents exhibit less trusting and helpful behavior than nonurban residents, but residents of different places differ little in trusting or helpful attitudes or dispositions. Using willingness to be interviewed as a measure of trusting or helpful behavior, this hypothesis was largely confirmed in analyses of data from a series of surveys of representative samples of the adult US population between 1952 and 1972. However, the results also show that differences in trusting and helpful behavior (i.e., refusal rates) between places of residence have become pronounced only in the late 1960s. Finally, analyses indicated that differences in refusal rates over places and times were largely due to variations in reported crime rates, rather than in population size, density, and heterogeneity, which have been the focus of traditional urban social psychology.
