An investigation of several agricultural by-products revealed that their suitability for activated carbon production is not determined by general material-specific features (elemental composition) but by type-specific features. A coarse-cellular structure (as in wood), which is indicated by porosities of the raw materials higher than 35% is disadvantageous. A specific change in the properties of cokes (porosity, density, hardness) is possible by varying the conditions of pyrolysis. By rapid heating in the pyrolysis step, for instance, macroporous residues are produced. Temperature and burnoff have the greatest influence on the quality of the activated carbon during the activation step. Of the investigated materials, coconut shells yield granular activated carbon of the highest quality. The following order of suitability of raw materials for activated carbon production was established: coconut shells> peach stones> plum stones> hazelnut shells> walnut shells> cherry stones.  相似文献

Electromembrane Process – Part 1: Fundamentals and Mathematical Modelling . In electromembrane processes the cation or anion selectivity of polymeric ion exchange membranes can be used for various applications. Industrially important examples are membrane electrolysis and its reversal, the fuel cell or several electrodialytic processes with mono- and bipolar membranes. The electrochemical equilibrium which is responsible for membrane selectivity is discussed together with the relevant transport mechanisms within and outside the membrane. The present status and open questions of modelling electromembrane processes are considered and the efficient combination of the different phenomena into an overall model of an electrodialytic process will be addressed. Numerous studies have shown that sorption of organic contaminants in soils is dominated by the natural organic carbon content (C org) of the soil. However, it is still under discussion whether sorption processes are fully reversible or whether an irreversibly sorbed contaminant fraction remains in the soil. This is especially important when considering soil remediation measures and its targets. In multi-stage sorption-desorption batch experiments with TCE, PCE, ortho-xylene and para-xylene and with the sorbents activated carbon, charcoal and a hydrophobic zeolite Y-200, the reversibility of sorption was studied. It could be shown that the structural features of the sorbents are of ample importance for the occurrence of a desorption-resistant fraction. While sorption was mainly reversible for the micro-porous zeolite Y-200 with a rigid pore network, charcoal and the activated carbon showed significant desorption hysteresis. However, following a subsequent sorption step, this fraction eventually desorbs and is re-mobilized.  相似文献

Long-term exposure to low concentrations of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water has been associated with increased human-health risks of bladder cancer and adverse reproductive outcomes. In this study, we investigated electrochemical reduction utilizing a resin-impregnated graphite cathode for the degradation of 17 DBPs (i.e. halomethanes, haloacetonitriles, halopropanones, chloral hydrate and trichloronitromethane) at low μg L−1 concentration levels. The reduction experiments were potentiostatically controlled at cathode potentials −700, −800 and −900 mV vs Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE) during 24 h. At the lowest potential applied (i.e. −900 mV vs SHE), the disappearance of DBPs from the solution after 24 h of reduction was >70%, except for chloroform (32%), 1,1-dichloropropanone (48%), and chloral hydrate (31%). Due to the participation of several removal mechanisms (e.g. electrochemical reduction, adsorption, volatilization and/or hydrolysis) it was not possible to distinguish the removal efficiencies of electrochemical reduction of individual compounds. Adsorption of the more hydrophilic DBPs (i.e. haloacetonitriles, chloral hydrate, and 1,1-dichloropropanone) onto the electrode seems to be affected by the cathode polarization, as the removals observed in the open circuit experiments were significantly higher than the ones obtained in electrochemical reduction under the same conditions. The overall efficiency of reduction was estimated based on the analyses of the released Cl, Br and I ions. Nearly complete C-I bond cleavage was achieved at all three potentials applied, and from the theoretically predicted release of I ions, calculated based on the removed DBPs, 86 ± 9 to 92 ± 1% was measured in the catholyte solution at −700 to −900 mV vs SHE. Debromination efficiencies obtained were 74 ± 3, 79 ± 6 and 68 ± 4% at −700, −800 and −900 mV vs SHE, while for C-Cl bond cleavage the obtained values were 69 ± 1, 72 ± 1 and 76 ± 4%, respectively. Nevertheless, dechlorination efficiencies are to be considered as approximate, since an increase in Cl concentration was observed in the open circuit experiments due to the hydrolysis of some of the chlorine-containing DBPs. Although the Coulombic efficiencies for DPBs dehalogenation were only 1.9 ± 0.3 (−900 mV vs SHE) -4.1 ± 0.2% (−700 mV vs SHE), relatively low energy consumption of the process was observed, estimated at 72 ± 2 Wh m−3 at −900 mV vs SHE for the concentration range of DBPs in this study (i.e. 65.3-129.7 μg L−1). The study demonstrated that reductive electrochemical treatment has the potential to be a modern remediation technology for the removal of low concentrations of halogenated DBPs in water.  相似文献

In the past decades, the main focus of water supply management has moved from construction of new water supply networks to rehabilitation and adaptation of the existing infrastructure. The decision-making process for the rehabilitation management relies heavily on the quality of the applied deterioration model. A recurring problem in the application of such models relates to the quality and availability of network data. These data are often incomplete or unreliable because building measures and damages are only documented properly recently and the recovery of older data is difficult and expensive. A key point in rehabilitation planning is therefore data collection and data reconstruction. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to present a methodology for the enhancement of the available data of water supply networks and the prognosis of the necessary rehabilitation rates under limited data availability. Results indicate that the presented data reconstruction technique has advantages as compared to traditional data extrapolation. It also allows the reconstruction of fragmentary data about existing water supply and wastewater collection systems for the operating utilities. However, it cannot be used for reconstructing failure types as well as the whole information on pipes (e.g. more than two missing information).  相似文献

The arsenic removal capacity of a natural oxide sample consisting basically of Mn-minerals (birnessite, cryptomelane, todorokite), and Fe-oxides (goethite, hematite), collected in the Iron Quadrangle mineral province in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has been investigated. As-spiked tap water and an As-rich mining effluent with As-concentrations from 100 μg L−1 to 100 mg L−1 were used for the experiments. Sorbent fractions of different particle sizes (<38 μm to 0.5 mm), including spherical material (diameter 2 mm), have been used. Batch and column experiments (pH values of 3.0, 5.5, and 8.5 for batch, and about pH 7.0 for column) demonstrated the high adsorption capacity of the material, with the sorption of As(III) being higher than that of As(V). At pH 3.0, the maximum uptake for As(V) and for As(III)-treated materials were 8.5 and 14.7 mg g−1, respectively. The Mn-minerals promoted the oxidation of As(III) to As(V), for both sorbed and dissolved As-species. Column experiments with the cFeMn-c sample for an initial As-concentration of 100 μg L−1 demonstrated a very efficient elimination of As(III), since the drinking water limit of 10 μg L−1 was exceeded only after 7400 BV total throughput. The As-release from the loaded samples was below the limit established by the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure, thus making the spent material suitable for discharge in landfill deposits.  相似文献

Epidemiologic studies have associated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality with ambient particulate air pollution. Particles smaller than 100 nm in diameter (ultrafine particles) are present in the urban atmosphere in very high numbers yet at very low mass concentration. Organs beyond the lungs are considered as targets for inhaled ultrafine particles, whereby the route of particle translocation deeper into the lungs is unclear. Five rats were exposed to aerosols of ultrafine titanium dioxide particles of a count median diameter of 22 nm (geometric standard deviation, GSD 1.7) for 1 hour. The lungs were fixed by intravascular perfusion of fixatives immediately thereafter. TiO(2) particles in probes of the aerosol as well as in systematic tissue samples were analyzed with a LEO 912 transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy filter for elemental microanalysis. The characteristic energy loss spectra were obtained by fast spectrum acquisition. Aerosol particles as well as those in the lung tissue were unambiguously identified by electron energy loss spectroscopy. Particles were mainly found as small clusters with a rounded shape. Seven percent of the particles in the lung tissue had a needle-like shape. The size distribution of the cluster profiles in the tissue had a count median diameter of 29 nm (GSD 1.7), which indicates no severe clustering or reshaping of the originally inhaled particles. Electron energy loss spectroscopy and related analytical methods were found to be suitable to identify and localize ultrafine titanium dioxide particles within chemically fixed and resin-embedded lung tissue.  相似文献
