Summary The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl acrylate (EA), styrene (St) and 2-vinyl pyridine (VP) is initiated upon irradiation at >350 nm of dichloromethane solutions containing N-ethoxy-2-methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate (EMP+PF6 -) and anthracene or thioxanthone. Photonic miniaturization requires seamless integration of linear and nonlinear optical components to achieve passive and active functions simultaneously. Among the available material systems, silicon photonics holds immense promise for optical signal processing and on-chip optical networks. However, silicon is limited to wavelengths above 1.1 μm and does not provide the desired lowest order optical nonlinearity for active signal processing. Here we report the integration of aluminum nitride (AlN) films on silicon substrates to bring active functionalities to chip-scale photonics. Using CMOS-compatible sputtered thin films we fabricate AlN-on-insulator waveguides that exhibit low propagation loss (0.6 dB/cm). Exploiting AlN's inherent Pockels effect we demonstrate electro-optic modulation up to 4.5 Gb/s with very low energy consumption (down to 10 fJ/bit). The ultrawide transparency window of AlN devices also enables high speed modulation at visible wavelengths. Our low cost, wideband, carrier-free photonic circuits hold promise for ultralow power and high-speed signal processing at the microprocessor chip level.  相似文献

The dynamics of a population expanding into unoccupied habitat has been primarily studied for situations in which growth and dispersal parameters are uniform in space or vary in one dimension. Here, we study the influence of finite-sized individual inhomogeneities and their collective effect on front speed if randomly placed in a two-dimensional habitat. We use an individual-based model to investigate the front dynamics for a region in which dispersal or growth of individuals is reduced to zero (obstacles) or increased above the background (hotspots), respectively. In a regime where front dynamics is determined by a local front speed only, a principle of least time can be employed to predict front speed and shape. The resulting analytical solutions motivate an event-based algorithm illustrating the effects of several obstacles or hotspots. We finally apply the principle of least time to large heterogeneous environments by solving the Eikonal equation numerically. Obstacles lead to a slow-down that is dominated by the number density and width of obstacles, but not by their precise shape. Hotspots result in a speed-up, which we characterize as function of hotspot strength and density. Our findings emphasize the importance of taking the dimensionality of the environment into account.  相似文献

High-strength, colorless glass–ceramics in the MgO/Al2O3/SiO2 system with high concentrations of ZrO2 and a great potential for technical application, e.g., as high-performance hard disc substrates, are investigated. ZrO2 concentrations from 6 to 9 mol% are added to a stoichiometric cordierite glass to investigate the influence of the concentration of the nucleating agent on the crystallization behavior and the mechanical properties. The phase formation and the microstructure of the glass–ceramics are studied using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy including electron backscatter diffraction. It is shown that the volume crystallization of ZrO2, a low-/high-quartz solid solution (low-/high-QSS), and spinel is accompanied by the surface crystallization of indialite. This phase offers a much smaller coefficient of thermal expansion than the other crystal phases, which may induce high compressive stresses in the surface layer of the glass–ceramics after cooling and seems to result in excellent mechanical properties of the material. Biaxial flexural strengths of up to 1 GPa were measured. Higher ZrO2 concentrations reduce the surface crystallization of indialite and decrease the mean size of the crystals resulting in a higher translucency. The volume-crystallizing phases and the mechanical properties of the glass–ceramics do not seem to be significantly affected by the analyzed ZrO2 concentrations.  相似文献

The author byline is an indispensable component of a scientific paper. Some journals have added contribution lists for each paper to provide detailed information of each author’s role. Many papers have explored, respectively, the byline and contribution lists. However, the relationship between the two remains unclear. We select three prominent general medical journals: Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Annals of Internal Medicine (Annals), and PLOS Medicine (PLOS). We analyze the relationship between the author byline and contribution lists using four indexes. Four main findings emerged. First, the number, forms, and names of contribution lists significantly differed among the three journals, although they adopted the criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Second, a U-shaped relationship exists between the extent of contribution and author order: the participation levels in contribution lists were highest for first authors, followed by last and second authors, and then middle authors with the lowest levels. Third, regarding the consistency between author order in the contribution list and byline, every contribution category has a high consistency in JAMA and Annals, while PLOS shows a low consistency, in general. Fourth, the three journals have a similar distribution for the first authors in the contribution category; the first author in the byline contributes the highest proportion, followed by the middle and second authors, and then the last author with the lowest proportion. We also develop recommendations to modify academic and writing practice: implement structured cross-contribution lists, unify formats and standards of contribution lists, draft the author contribution criteria in the social sciences and humanities, and consider author contribution lists in scientific evaluation.  相似文献

The prediction of formability is one of the most important tasks in sheet metal forming process simulation. The common criterion for ductile fracture in industrial applications is the Forming Limit Diagram (FLD). This is only applicable for linear strain paths. However, in most industrial simulation cases non-linear strain paths occur. To resolve this problem, a phenomenological approach is introduced, the so-called Generalized Forming Limit Concept (GFLC). The GFLC enables prediction of localized necking on arbitrary non-linear strain paths. Another possibility is the use of the Time Dependent Evaluation Method (TDEM) within the simulation as a failure criteria. During the Numisheet Benchmark 1 (2014) a two-stage forming process was performed with three typical sheet materials (AA5182, DP600 and TRIP 780) and three different blank shapes. The task was to determinate the point in time and space of local instability. Therefore the strain path for the point of maximum local thinning is evaluated. To predict the start of local necking the Generalized Forming Limit Concept (GFLC), the Time Dependent Evaluation Method (TDEM) and the modified TDEM were applied. The results of the simulation are compared with the results of the Benchmark experiment.  相似文献
