Cost estimates to guide pre-selection of processes

A process is a method of shaping, joining or surface-treating a material. Process selection has three steps. The first is to identify from the ‘menu’ of all available processes, the subset, which can give a chosen material the desired shape with the desired detail, precision and finish. The second is to choose, from among these, the ones that will do so at the lowest cost. The final step is to investigate the most promising processes in depth, exploring considerations such as availability, in-house experience, safety and environmental issues. The first two steps can be thought of as process pre-selection. Components have to be assembled and finished to create products. Here too, the ability to rank by cost, however crudely, helps guide pre-selection. Cost models are reviewed from the perspective of material and process selection. An approximate model is useful provided it has generality—that is, it must allow comparison of very different processes. Many approaches fail in this. One that works, based on resource consumption, is developed here and its use for selection is illustrated. It has been implemented as part of a tool that allows rapid pre-selection from a database of 112 processes.     

Ionizing-Radiation Response of the GaAs/(Al, Ga)As PHEMT: A Comparison of Gamma- and X-ray Results

An experiment is reported on the effect of ⁶⁰Co gamma rays or 45-keV x-ray photons on the GaAs/(Al, Ga)As PHEMT. It is shown that x-ray treatment can improve the dc performance of the device in some cases. This finding is attributed in part to the annealing or modification of DX centers.     

Effects of Electric Field Gradient on an Anti-Plane Crack in Piezoelectric Ceramics

An anti-plane, semi-infinite crack in polarized ceramics is analyzed using the theory of elastic dielectrics with electric field gradient. The effects of electric field gradient on electromechanical fields around the crack is examined.     

A combination of differential equations and convolution in understanding the spread of an epidemic

Nonlinear dynamical method of projecting the transmission of an epidemic is accurate if the input parameters and initial value variables are reliable. Here, such a model is proposed for predicting an epidemic. A method to supplement two variables and two parameters for this proposed model is demonstrated through a robust statistical approach. The method described here worked well in case of three continuous distributions. Model predictions could be lower estimates due to under-reporting of disease cases. Elastic solutions of a cylindrical rod containing periodically distributed inclusions with axisymmetric eigenstrains

Summary. In this paper, we give the elastic solution for a special type of microstructure – a circular cylindrical rod containing periodically distributed inclusions along its axial direction. Each inclusion has the same uniform axisymmetric transformation strain (eigenstrain). Analytical elastic solutions are obtained for the displacements, stresses and elastic strain energy of the rod. The effects of microstructure and its evolution (growth of inclusions) on the elastic stress and strain fields as well as the strain energy of the rod are quantitatively demonstrated. As a result of such microstructure evolution nominal stress-strain relation with strain softening is derived for a rod under uniaxial tension.

Optimization of a photopolymerizable holographic recording material based on polyvinylalcohol using angular responses

Acrylamide-based holographic recording materials have significant advantages and the composition of these materials has been optimized in terms of energetic sensitivity and diffraction efficiency. As a result, diffraction gratings with an efficiency of almost 80% for energetic exposures of 35 mJ/cm² and a spatial frequency of 1000 lines/mm in photosensitive films 65 μm thick have been obtained. In this paper we present the effects of intensity, thickness, and variation in the concentration of each component by studying the angular responses of the diffraction gratings recorded in each composition.     

Programmable group-delay module using binary polarization switching

We demonstrate the first programmable group-delay module based on polarization switching. With a unique binary tuning mechanism, the device can generate any differential group delay value from -45 to +45 ps with a resolution of 1.40 ps, or any true-time-delay value from 0 to 45 ps with a resolution of 0.7 ps. The delay varying speeds for both applications are under 1 ms and can be as fast as 0.1 ms. We evaluate both the dynamic and static performances of the device while paying special attention to its dynamic figures of merit for polarization-mode dispersion emulation and compensation applications. Our experiment shows that the device exhibits a negligible transient-effect induced power penalty (<0.2 dB) in a 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero system.     

STUDY ON PHASE PERCEPTION IN SPEECH

The perceptual effect of the phase information in speech has been studied by auditory subjective tests. On the condition that the phase spectrum in speech is changed while amplitude spectrum is unchanged, the tests show that: (1) If the envelop of the reconstructed speech signal is unchanged, there is indistinctive auditory perception between the original speech and the reconstructed speech; (2) The auditory perception effect of the reconstructed speech mainly lies on the amplitude of the derivative of the additive phase; (3) td is the maximum relative time shift between different frequency components of the reconstructed speech signal. The speech quality is excellent while td <10ms; good while 10ms< td <20ms; common while 20ms< td <35ms, and poor while td >35ms.
