Low levels of beta hexosaminidase A in healthy individuals with apparent deficiency of this enzyme

The common denominator of the different meanings of dizziness is a disturbance of spatio-postural orientation, which indicates an imminent danger of fall. H?henschwindel (fear of hights) with grasping and holding in the primate is instinctive behavior caused by a visual cliff or sudden dizziness. Because of the many possible meanings of dizziness, the case history is important for differential diagnosis. Vertiginous and non-vertiginous dizziness, black out and unsteady gait without vertigo should be distinguished. In addition, the duration and time course of the attack, releasing mechanisms and accompanying symptoms of dizziness should be explored. In recurrent dizziness without hearing loss, vestibular, vascular, cardial and epileptic disorders should be considered as well as intoxication, cerebral tumor, cerebellar hemangioblastoma, multiple sclerosis, neurosis and psychosis. Epileptic dizziness occurs not only in the prodromal stage of grand mal attacks and in temporal lobe epilepsy, but also in petit mal absences of short duration (less than 5 s) in which the blurring of consciousness is not apparent; absences of short duration are easily overlooked in childhood. Besides the objective history obtained from the patient's relatives, EEG-recording when falling asleep in the morning after one night of sleep deprivation are the best means for the diagnosis of epilepsia. Spontaneous nystagmus after complete exclusion of visual fixation is a physiological phenomenon. For differential diagnosis between physiological and pathological spontaneous nystagmus, Frenzel's spectacles in the dark room are indispensable. The distinction of spontaneous nystagmus in the narrower sense, gaze nystagmus and fixation nystagmus is discussed. The diagnostic importance of the direction of nystagmus is mentioned. Jerking nystagmus may be congenital. Pendular nystagmus may be acquired. Therefore, additional criteria for the differential diagnosis between congenital and acquired nystagmus are necessary.     

Polarcardiographic criteria for myocardial infarction in Chinese men

A biochemical study was performed in two patients submitted to insulin coma therapy. The injection of insulin resulted in a decrease of free and total tryptophan as well as tyrosine in plasma, while NEFA were not influenced by this treatment. The ratio of tryptophan to tyrosine was enhanced. The administration of glucose after insulin provoked an increase of free and total tryptophan. The results support the hypothesis that in man insulin may favor the uptake of tryptophan by the brain, and enhance the synthesis of cerebral serotonin.     

有限精度时间自动机的可达性检测

为了缓解状态空间爆炸问题,减小模型检测过程中生成的状态空间,加快模型检测速度,引入有限精度时间自动机(finite precision timed automata,简称FPTA)作为实时系统的形式模型,并提出了一种数据结构SDS(series of delay sequence)符号化表示状态空间中的状态集.FPTA只记录时钟变量的整数值及时钟变化的先后次序,从而减小生成的状态空间.在一定的时间约束下,Alur与Dill提出的时间自动机的可达性检测可简化为FPTA的可达性检测.举例描述了状态空间的生成过程和表示方法.最后,列出部分初步的实验结果,分析了SDS的特点及不足.     

Effect of bushenhuoxue tablet on serum lipid peroxide, blood lipid and blood sugar in type II diabetics

Sixty-eight patients suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM) type II with Kidney Deficiency and blood stasis were enrolled and divided randomly into treatment group (34 cases) and placebo group (34 healthy subjects). The amount of serum lipid peroxide (LPO), blood lipid and blood sugar was determined. The results showed that the serum LPO in treatment group was higher than that in placebo group. The serum LPO increased significantly in DM patients with vascular disease or with uncontrolled blood sugar. The serum LPO was positively correlated with triglyceride (TG). After using Bushenhuoxue Tablet (BSHX) serum LPO lowered, blood sugar decreased and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C)increased in treatment group, but in placebo group these three parameters were not changed significantly. These results indicated that LPO reaction in type II DM patients increased. The higher the blood sugar and TG or complicated with vascular disease, the LPO reaction enhanced markedly. BSHX tablets have the function of reducing the serum LPO and blood sugar, clearing cholesterol. Therefore, this tablet will have a good prospect in the prevention and treatment for DM patients complicated with vascular disease.     

Iontophoretically applied corticosteroids do not affect the firing of hippocampal neurons

In view of the possible role of the hippocampus in the neuroendocrine regulation of ACTH secretion, experiments were conducted in rats and cats in which cortisol (C) and corticosterone (CS) were applied by iontophoresis and pressure microinjection while recording from single identified pyramidal cells in the dorsal hippocampus, using multi-barrelled microelectrodes. None of the more than 500 cells tested responded with a significant change in firing rate. The possible relation of these findings to neuroendocrine regulation of ACTH secretion is discussed.     

Traumatic tricuspid regurgitation complicating endocarditis and right-to-left intracardiac shunt. A case report of successful operation

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of cystinuria and cystine stone disease among families of patients with cystine stones, and to determine their distribution by age, sex and associated morbidity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study comprised 180 relatives (87 males and 93 females, mean age 43 years) descended from two brothers over four generations who live in two areas in northern Jordan. Data were collected using a questionnaire and home visits, by urinary cystine testing and radiology to detect stone, and assessing hypertension and renal impairment. RESULTS: Of the 180 subjects, 104 (58%) had a positive reaction for cystine in urine; 33 (32%) of these were younger than 15 years. Twenty members (11%) of the families had evidence of renal cystine stone disease. Hypertension and renal impairment were detected in a significant proportion of individuals with cystine stone disease. CONCLUSION: Cystinuria is a major risk factor for cystine stone formation. Family screening is valuable in detecting the cystinuric population and in assessing individuals with stones. Early recognition, treatment and counselling result in better management and prevention. The establishment of a cystine study group in our region is essential.     

Potentiometric sensor for methylene blue based on methylene blue-silicotungstate ion association and its pharmaceutical applications

A methylene blue (MB) poly(vinyl chloride) membrane sensor based on MB-silicotungstate (SLT) ion association as electroactive material was described. The linear response covered the range 1 x 10(-3)-1 x 10(-6) mol x dm(-3) MB solution, with a slope 52.0+/-0.8 mV decade(-1) (pH range 3.0-10.0). The detection limit was 7.65 x 10(-7) mol x dm(-3). The electrode showed stability, good reproducibility and fast response. Interferences from common inorganic cations, some organic base were negligible. These characteristics of the electrode enabled it to be used successfully for the determination of MB in injection. There was a good agreement for the results of MB content in injection between potentiometric method and USP standard procedure.
