Due to bandwidth and storage limitations, medical images must be compressed before transmission and storage. However, the compression reduces the image fidelity, especially when the images are compressed at low bit rates. The reconstructed images suffer from blocking artifacts and the image quality is severely degraded under high compression ratios. In this paper, we present a strategy to increase the compression ratio with low computational burden and excellent decoded quality. We regard the discrete cosine transform as a bandpass filter to decompose a sub-block into equal-sized bands. After a band-gathering operation, a high similarity property among the bands is found. By utilizing the similarity property, the bit rate of compression can be greatly reduced. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the original image are not sacrificed. Thus, it can avoid the misdiagnosis of diseases. Simulations were carried out on different kinds of medical images to demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance when compared to other existing transform coding schemes, such as JPEG, in terms of bit rate and quality. For the case of angiogram images, the peak signal-to-noise-ratio gain is 13.5 dB at the same bit rate of 0.15 bits per pixel when compared to the JPEG compression. As for the other kinds of medical images, their benefits are not so obvious as for angiogram images; however, the gains for them are still 4-8 dB at high compression ratios. The fabrication, spectroscopic properties, and laser performance of Nd/sup 3+/-doped Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ channel waveguide lasers are described. Lasing is obtained at both 1.066 and 1.375 /spl mu/m with threshold pump powers as low as 2.7 mW. The rib waveguides are reactive-ion-etched into Nd:Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ layers formed by reactive magnetron sputtering. These high-index low-loss rare-earth-doped waveguides are fabricated on silicon substrates and offer the potential for integration with photonic crystal structures for compact optical circuits. 相似文献

Electrophosphorescent copolymers have been synthesized by covalent bonding of a red‐emitting osmium complex Os(bpftz), which contains two 3‐trifluoromethyl‐5‐(4‐tert‐butyl‐2‐pyridyl)triazolate (bpftz) cyclometalated ligands, into the backbone of a bipolar polyfluorene (PF) copolymer. Employing these copolymers, a highly efficient red polymer light‐emitting diode has been realised that has an external quantum efficiency of 18.0%, a maximum brightness of 38 000 cd m?2, and an emission centered at 618 nm. A new fast algorithm for the computation of the modulated lapped transform (MLT) is proposed and its efficient implementation using pipelining techniques and complex programmable logic device (CPLD) is presented. The new algorithm computes a length-M MLT via the length-M/2 fast Fourier transform (FFT). Computational overhead due to data shuffling in pre-processing and post-processing is offset in hardware realisation. Hence the overall throughput of the MLT computation for real-time applications is significantly improved. The pipelined CPLD architecture and circuitry are described in detail. A college homework problem, dealing with a loaded transmission line, is reviewed. The setup is then treated as a two-port distributed network. The law of conservation of power is explained with the aid of a scattering theory. Two coupled circuit relations are then formulated. One, associated with the load terminals, is quite different from the conventional equation involving the self impedance and the mutual impedance. There is a significant need for a system to recognize Braille documents in order to preserve them and make them available to a larger group of visually impaired people. A new system for Braille document recognition is proposed. We introduce a highly-adaptive Braille documents parameters estimation method to automatically determine the rotation angle, indentations, and spacing in both vertical and horizontal orientation. The key element in determining the rotation angle of the images is based on Radon transform. Also we introduce the method of Braille translation using Belief Propagation on the assumption that the Braille document is a Hidden Markov Model. We demonstrate the effectiveness of rotation angle correction as well as the accuracy of indentation and spacing in both orientations. We also prove that the translation algorithm is efficient and robust to errors made in the dot detection. The proposed method may be used for further applications. 相似文献
