The effect of topical corticosteroids on refractive outcome and corneal haze after photorefractive keratectomy

BACKGROUND: The effect of topical corticosteroids after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) remains a matter of some controversy. Refractive effects may be different according to the amount of myopia and timing of instillation. METHODS: Two groups of patients were studied: Study A consisted of 215 eyes (128 patients) with PRK (mean baseline myopia, -6.53 +/- 2.22 D) that received no corticosteroids (No Corticosteroid Group) unless significant regression or corneal haze appeared (Delayed Corticosteroid Group), and in Study B, we randomly assigned eyes to the Initial Corticosteroid Group (mean baseline myopia, -6.39 +/- 1.84 D) or the No/delayed Corticosteroid Group (mean baseline myopia -5.78 +/- 2.02 D). Clinical results after PRK for low-to-moderate and high myopia were compared. RESULTS: In the first group, 70.9% (73 eyes) of moderately myopic eyes (mean, -4.56 +/- 1.10 D) belonged to the No Corticosteroid Group that had a mean refraction of -5.39 +/- 1.77 D. Delayed Corticosteroid Group eyes were more myopic (mean, -7.52 +/- 2.10 D), and showed more severe haze than those in the No Corticosteroid Group. In study B, only in high myopes with more than -6.00 D (mean, -7.76 +/- 1.15 D) did refraction and corneal haze outcomes show significant difference between the Initial Corticosteroid Group and the No/delayed Corticosteroid Group. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of topical corticosteroids after PRK were less in moderate myopes compared to high myopes. Delayed instillation of corticosteroids did not reverse the regression or haze whereas initial instillation showed a beneficial effect on high myopes but not on moderate myopes.

The lattice dynamics of the Fe(tpa) (NCS)2 complex : light-induced excited spin state trapping effect

A light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) experiment for a thermal gradual spin crossover complex, Fetris (2-pyridylmethyl) amine(NCS)2 or Fe(tpa) (NCS)2, was attempted for the first time. The high spin (HS) state after light inducement stayed metastable over a period of days without relaxation at 10 K. Intersystem relaxation from a high to a low spin (LS) complex occurred at 50 K after bleaching at 10 K. Investigation of the Mossbauer spectra of the LIESST and relaxation experiment indicated that the Debye–Waller factor was a correlation parameter of the HS fraction and that the co-operative effect played a role in the relaxation process for such a solid compound. Thick-layer glycerin-containing bichromated gelatin for recording volume holograms

A thick-layer light-sensitive material consisting of glycerin-containing bichromated gelatin has been prepared and used to record real-time volume holograms with 0.44 μm helium-cadmium laser radiation. The thickness of the layers is 400–600 μm. The holographic sensitivity of the material is 1 J/cm². Variation of the creep limit and structure of a welded joint in PT-3V titanium alloy under the effect of cyclic loading. Report 2

Comparative analysis of the characteristics of amplitude-dependent internal friction (IF) was carried out to explain reasons leading to an increase of the creep limit of the butt welded joint in PT-3V titanium alloy (PT-2V filler material) after cyclic loading. IF was measured by the method of the direct torsional pendulum on cylindrical specimens representing the gage part of the specimens subjected to preliminary cyclic loading. The data were processed using the Granato-Lucke theory. The results show that the reduction of IF after cyclic loading took place as a result of an increase of the number and redistribution of pinning points of the dislocations. Consequently, the density of mobile dislocations decreases by 8% and the length of dislocation segments by 18%. These processes of stabilization of the structure were completed within 5·10 ⁴ cycles of preliminary loading. Stabilization of the dislocation structure of the material of the welded joint increases its creep limit.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 4, pp. 35–40, April, 1996.     

COATES GRAPH APPROACH FOR GENERATING SYMBOLIC NETWORK FUNCTION

In this paper, symbolic code matrix ,constant matrix and count matrix are defined .The first twomatrices are used to describe the elemental expression of augmented matrix and the nede admittance equa-tion is thus obtained. The third matrix is used to obtain the incoming degree matrix, and according to thematrix all the 1- factors of the Coates graph are given. By using the data code, the determinant is expandedand the same items in the expansion are merged. Thus the symbolic network function in which no term can-cellation occurs is generated.
