Propagation Path Visibility Estimation for Radio Local Distribution Systems in Built-Up Areas

For the design of radio local distribution systems in densely built-up areas, estimating how many subscribers are in sight from a nodal station is important. This paper proposes a method for estimating probability of success of line-of-sight paths termed visibility. Method validity is confirmed bypractical field examinations.     

Highly specific detection of H2O2-dependent luminol chemiluminescence in stimulated human leukocytes using polyvinyl films.

When human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were attached to glass coverslips, cells always spread and formed reactive oxygen species prior to any experimental stimulation. To avoid this, a polyvinylidine chloride film was used as an inactive substance to place the cells. Cells engaged in phagocytosis on the film exhibited a specific H2O2-mediated luminol chemiluminescence (LCL) at the cell-particle interface; the cells stimulated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate became aggregated and the LCL was observed at the cell-cell contact. These results corresponded well with those obtained by an electron microscopic H2O2-demonstration method.     

Congenital oligodendroglioma: a case report of a 34th-gestational week fetus with immunohistochemical study and review of the literature

A case of congenital oligodendroglioma occurring in a 34th-gestational week fetus is reported. The tumor was necrotic, hemorrhagic, and gelatinous. It covered the basal part of the brain, and almost the entire cerebellum was replaced by the tumor. The tumor cells had small, round, hyperchromatic nuclei and watery clear cytoplasm, and were arranged in a paved or alveolar pattern. Immunohistochemically, S100 protein, myelin-basic protein, neuron-specific enolase and Leu 7 were weakly positive for the cytoplasm, but glial fibrilliary acidic protein, synaptophysin, neurofilament, desmin, and vimentin were negative. Many tumor cell nuclei were positive for mutant p53 protein, and the labeling index was 85%. But there was no genetic alteration in exons 4 to 9 of p53 gene from the peripheral blood. The apoptosis index was 1.5%. Considering the p53 labeling index and the apoptosis index together, this congenital oligodendroglioma may be regarded as potentially malignant despite the benign morphological features.     

Traffic characteristics of LEOS-based global personalcommunications networks

The authors present important traffic issues in a low earth orbit satellite-based global personal communications network. The article gives an overview of the characteristics of tomorrow's personal communications networks from a subscriber traffic viewpoint. Selection of multiple access scheme as well as traffic modeling in such systems is discussed, and effects of natural, unbalanced global communications traffic on the performance of the system are distinguished     

Subblock processing in MMSE-FDE under fast fading environments

Frequency domain equalization (FDE) has been studied for reducing inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by frequency selective fading in single carrier systems. When a high-mobility terminal exists in the system, the channel state may change within a DFT block. Then, the ISI reduction performance of FDE degrades since cyclicity of the channel matrix is lost. We propose to divide a received data block into multiple subblocks to decrease the channel transition within the DFT block in fast fading environments. Also, to satisfy periodicity of the received signal in each subblock, we introduce a pseudo cyclic prefix technique. The results of numerical analysis show that the proposed method can effectively decrease the error floor in fast fading environments.     

A 50 GHz GaAs FET MIC transmitter/receiver using hermetic miniatureprobe transitions

A very compact 50-GHz-band transmitter/receiver for a video link is described. The RF assemblies used in the system consist of 25/50-GHz frequency doublers, a 25-GHz dielectric-resonator oscillator, and a 25-GHz FM modulator. The circuits make extensive use of microwave integrated circuit (MIC) technology with all GaAs FETs as active elements. The frequency doublers exhibit a minimum conversion loss of 2.6 dB and a maximum output power of 11 dBm. The modulator is highly frequency stabilized by the dielectric resonator. Recently developed miniature probe microstrip-to-waveguide transitions permit the MIC assemblies to be installed compactly in hermetically sealed packages. Design considerations and experimental data for the transition are presented. Using these technologies a transmitting power of 10 dBm and a receiver noise figure of 13 dB have been obtained     

Pressure carbonization of pitch/phenolic resin mixtures

Phenolic resins and the benzene-soluble fraction of a coal tar pitch were mixed in a solvent (pyridine) and carbonized at 600° C in a gold tube under a pressure of 30 MPa. Yields, optical textures and graphitizabilities of the carbons were studied. Large carbon yields (>80%) were obtained from sealed tubes under pressure (closed system). In open tubes under pressure (open system), only slight improvements in carbon yields were observed. As the resin content in the starting mixtures increased, the optical texture of the resultant carbons decreased from coarse mosaic to isotropic through intermediates with a gradual decrease in size of mosaic units. These intermediate optical textures occurred with a wider range of resin content under pressure than under atmospheric pressure, especially from closed systems. Changes in structural parameters of the carbons after the 2800° C treatment corresponded to the changes in optical texture with resin content.
