Oscar Niemeyer: a misbehaved pupil of rationalism

Oscar Niemeyer, who will be 90 years old in December, holds an unique position among the great masters of twentieth-century world architecture. Whereas he is both admired and criticized for the formal liberties he takes, most critical commentaries centre upon the interpretation of orthodox modernism by this early disciple of Le Corbusier. Based upon the architect's written statements, as well as on a potential genealogy of his ideas, this paper seeks to assess Niemeyer's standing in the context of selected buildings.     

Vertically high-density interconnection for mobile application

There are several PWB technologies in the market that enables high density interconnection for product miniaturization, and this paper focuses on two HDI technologies, SSP and FVSS^®, and discuss the new PWB technologies and the reliability evaluation results for mobile applications. SSP is manufactured in simple lamination process using conventional FR4 materials, which enables future cost reduction and high reliability. FVSS contains filled buried via hole (BVH) and filled micro blind via (μvia) process. By combining the two process FVSS accomplishes high vertical design capability with Stacked μvia-on-μvia and stacked μvia-on-BVH designs.Key reliability requirements for final product quality is drop and temperature cycling reliability in board level in addition to evaluate PWB specific tests to compare performance of new materials used in PWB.     

Full C-Band Tuning Operation of Semiconductor Double-Ring Resonator-Coupled Laser With Low Tuning Current

A widely tunable double-ring resonator-coupled laser is developed for use in a photonic packet switching system. By using a double-ring resonator as a wavelength-selective filter, full -band tuning operation is achieved with a low tuning current, and the fabrication process is simpler than that used for distributed-Bragg-reflector-type tunable lasers. A tuning range of 50.0 nm with a current injection of less than 7 mA is successfully demonstrated.     

Design and synthesis of new secretory phospholipase A2 inhibitor of a phospholipid analog

All stereoisomers of N-acyl-4,5-disubstituted oxazolidinone phospholipid analogs were synthesized by regio and stereoselective epoxide ring opening accompanied by introduction of an amino group. The (4R,5S)-derivative showed stronger inhibitory activity toward type II phospholipase A2 than the 4-substituted oxazolidinone phospholipid analog previously reported.

Fine Patterning of Hybrid Titania Films by Ultraviolet Irradiation

Photosensitive hybrid titania films have been prepared from titanium butoxide modified with β-diketone and methacrylic acid. When this film is exposed to UV light, the β-diketonato chelate from the alkoxide and β-diketone is dissociated, and the unsaturated hydrocarbon of methacrylic acid is polymerized. These structural changes in the gel film have led to a difference between the solubility of irradiated and unirradiated parts in the film; therefore, a fine patternable hybrid titania film has been fabricated.     

Performance of COFDM-based transmitter diversity in aroad-to-vehicle communication system

Proposes a coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (COFDM) based road-to-vehicle communication system. The proposed system makes efficient use of COFDM in order to get the implicit transmitter diversity effect. The paper then evaluates the received signal power and bit error rate performance in two diversity models. In one model, two antennas are vertically set up on top of a base station (BS) post. The other model uses two BS and the same signal is simultaneously transmitted from both BS. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme is capable of obtaining the transmitter diversity effect in both models
