Experimental investigation of heat exchange in a porous annular channel

The problems connected with the intensification of heat exchange in an annular channel with a porous inner wall are considered. Sintering of very fine molybdenum and tungsten powders

Conclusions Vacuum annealing at a temperature above 900°K enables the specific surfaces of very fine loose tungsten and molybdenum powders to be varied in a wide range. The vacuum sintering of compacts pressed from very fine (particle size less than 0.05m tungsten and molybdenum powders is accompanied by severe cracking. In the hot pressing of very fine Mo and W powders produced by the pyrolysis of carbonyls in a stream of high-temperature plasma, a specimen density close to theoretical is reached at 1600°K i.e., at a temperature not less than 400°K lower than the sintering temperatures of powders of particle size more than 1 m. Sintering lowers the amounts of carbon and oxygen in Mo and W by more than half compared with the starting condition.Translated from Poroshkovaya Metallurgiya, No. 1(229), pp. 47–51, January, 1982.     

New algorithm for the slant transform

Two new algorithms that are more convenient for computation than existing ones for the slant transform are developed. These algorithms reveal the close relationship between the slant transform and the Walsh-Hadamard transform and demonstrate that the slant transform may be approached by a series of steps which gradually change the transform from a Hadamard or Walsh transform to a slant transform.     

Results in the reconstruction of the pyeloureteral segment using the Anderson-Hynes method

In an introduction the authors take into consideration the term Hydronephrosis and then they reviewed indications for a correction-repair of a pyelo-ureteral segment. There is shortly presented what is to be expected from an "ideal" procedure for a such reconstruction and then the operative technique of Anderson-Hynes method is described. They have operated on 37 patients using this procedure and according to X-ray finding (Degree of dilatation of calices and pyelon) patients were divided into four groups. Of primary importance in the evaluation of end results are: X-ray finding, urine analysis and subjective feeling. According to these criteria an excellent result has been attained in 15 patients, very good in 5, rather good in 8, while in 4 the result was bad; 5 patients were lost to follow-up.     

Heat exchange in the flow of rheologically complex media in a plane-parallel channel

On scientometrical characteristics on information activities of leading scientists

A comparative analysis of the information activities of leading scientists has been carried out, including 5 Soviet chemists and 5 foreign ones, and 8 Soviet physicists, specialist in low temperature physics. Within chemists there has appeared a tendency to a new form of scientific activities, namely ephemeron teams which favour the production line mode of getting new information. In physics, the traditional scheme is preserved: leading scientists publish few articles and have few co-authors. The ephemeron teams produce an expanding information: new objects and processes are studied from the previously elaborated point of view. The specific average citation rate (number of references per number of papers) is a criterion for separating the publications of the intellectual industry from the pilot studies full of novel ideas.Repinted from: A. Determination of thermophysical characteristics of high heat-conductance materials on thin samples

Leucinosis--a case of congenital metabolic disease in a child

Trasditional Chinese medicine is based on inductive-synthetic reasoning with regard to all life processes, in contrast to the causal-analytic orientation in our Western medicine. This philosophical approach is based on a system of comparisons (equivalents), referred to as Yin and Yang. Vital functions are seen as "energizing" processes, whereby the acupuncture points and the system of meridians are seen as a means of regulation for this "energy". A disturbed balance in this energy results in illness. The therapy according to the acupuncture method is to acheive a balance in the disturbed flow of energy by means of acupuncture points. By utilizing biophysical methods of measurement, it is possible to prove that a change in this energy takes place. The complex active principle which results in the effectiveness of acupuncture includes neurophysiological, biochemical and biophysical functional processes.
