Tannin from larch (Larix gmelini) bark extracts, as a natural renewable resource, was used to prepare tannin–urea–formaldehyde (TUF) resin. The chemical structures of larch tannin and TUF resin were characterized by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization‐time of flight mass spectrometry and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. The thermal behaviors of TUF resin were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermomechanical analysis (TMA). The performances of TUF resin were investigated by measuring the bond strength and formaldehyde emission of its bonded plywood. It was clearly shown that larch tannin is mainly composed of prodelphinidin repeating units. Phenolic groups were introduced into TUF resin mainly linked by methylene bond. Larch tannin has an adverse effect on the resin curing. However, it promoted the rigidity and flexibility of the glued system and upgraded the properties of plywood. This article reports the genotoxicity assessment of an extract of M. oleifera seed powder and the water-soluble Moringa oleifera lectin (WSMoL) isolated from seeds. The lectin isolated by chitin chromatography showed hemagglutinating activity with different erythrocytes, activity in a broad pH range (4.5 to 9.5), and retention of hemagglutinating activity after being heated to 100 °C. Genotoxicity of the seed extract and WSMoL were assessed using the cell-free plasmid DNA as well as the Salmonella typhimurium (Ames and Kado) assays with TA97, TA98, TA100, and TA102 in the presence or absence of hepatic metabolization. Seed extract at concentration (0.2 μg/μL) recommended to treat water was not genotoxic by Ames, Kado, and cell-free plasmid DNA assays. S. typhimurium strains showed to be sensitive to M. oleifera extract revealing a mutagenic effect at doses higher than 0.6 μg/μL with hepatic metabolization. The extract at doses higher than 0.4 μg/μL, without hepatic metabolization, was mutagenic for TA100 and TA102. WSMoL was nonmutagenic by used assays. The use of high concentrations of the extract may pose a risk to human health and the safe use of M. oleifera seed powder to treat water for human consumption requires more study; however, the purified lectin could be an alternative for water treatment. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The concentration 0.2 μg/μL of M. oleifera seed extract recommended to treat water for humans did not pose a risk to human health. The mutagenicity detected at concentrations higher than 0.4 μg/μL was not due to WSMoL, lectin isolated from extract.  相似文献

Natural attenuation processes of chlorinated solvents in soils and groundwaters are increasingly considered as options to manage contaminated sites. Under anoxic conditions, reactions with ferrous iron sorbed at iron(hyro)xides may dominate the overall transformation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and other chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. We investigated mechanisms and product formation of CCl4 reduction by Fe(II) sorbed to goethite, which may lead to completely dehalogenated products or to chloroform (CHCl3), a toxic product which is fairly persistent under anoxic conditions. A simultaneous transfer of two electrons and cleavage of two C-Cl bonds of CCl4 would completely circumvent chloroform production. To distinguish between initial one- or two-bond cleavage, 13C-isotope fractionation of CCl4 was studied for reactions with Fe(II)/ goethite (isotopic enrichment factor epsilon = -26.5% percent per thousand) and with model systems for one C-Cl bond cleavage and either single-electron transfer (Fe(II) porphyrin, epsilon = -26.1 percent per thousand) or partial two-electron transfer (polysulfide, epsilon = -22.2 percent per thousand). These epsilon values differ significantlyfrom calculations for simultaneous cleavage of two C-Cl bonds (epsilon approximately equal to -50 percent per thousand), indicating that only one C-Cl bond is broken in the critical first step of the reaction. At pH 7, reduction of CCl4 by Fe(II)/ goethite produced approximately 33% CHCl3, 20% carbon monoxide (CO), and up to 40% formate (HCOO-). Addition of 2-propanol-d8 resulted in 33% CDCl3 and only 4% CO, indicating that both products were generated from trichloromethyl radicals (*CCl3), chloroform by reaction with hydrogen radical donors and CO by an alternative pathway likely to involve surface-bound intermediates. Hydrolysis of CO to HCOO-was surface-catalyzed by goethite butwastoo slow to account for the measured formate concentrations. Chloroform yields slightly increased with pH at constant Fe(II) sorption density, suggesting that pH-dependent surface processes direct product branching ratios. Surface-stabilized intermediates may thus facilitate abiotic mineralization of CCl4, whereas the presence of H radical donors, such as natural organic matter, enhances formation of toxic CHCl3.  相似文献

During the past decade the reduction in size of functional architectures has been a dominating trend in many fields of science and technology. The search for electronic materials that can be cheaply solution-processed into nanopowders, while simultaneously providing quality device characteristics, represents a major challenge for material scientists. Solvothermal process is used in order to obtain fine nanoparticles of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 at low temperatures by using an inorganic, ionic precursor. Rietveld refinement proves the presence of a mixture of 65% tetragonal and 35% cubic nanoparticles in the barium titanate powder with an average size of 73 nm and 67 nm, respectively. FTIR shows that an acid treatment allows the elimination of carbonate impurities.  相似文献

To understand interpersonal workplace deviance in a more comprehensive way, in this study we investigated the relationship between personality and organisational variables. Hierarchical multiple regressions based on responses from 284 employees revealed that physical violence was positively related to continuance commitment and workplace frustration and negatively correlated with procedural justice. Also, psychological violence was negatively correlated with age but positively linked to affective commitment and frustration. Amongst personality traits, agreeableness was negatively correlated with both physical and psychological violence. Furthermore, personality traits still explained a statistically significant proportion of variance after controlling for organisational and sociodemographic factors. Thus, it seems imperative to include personality traits to fully understand interpersonal workplace deviance. The discussion aims to help organisations cope with deviance in their work environment. The real-time thermo-optical properties of thin-film relaxor ferroelectric (9/65/35) lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) films (∼2 μm) were investigated and compared to identical composition of thick PLZT ceramics (∼1 mm). Since PLZT absorbs strongly in the far-infrared, a CO2 laser beam (λ = 10.6 μm) was used to create a Gaussian temperature distribution at the surface of the material, emulating a lens. Subsequently, a low power visible He-Ne laser, travelling along the same path as the CO2 laser, probed the optical properties of the induced PLZT thermal lens. It was found that identical composition thin-film and thick PLZT ceramics have opposite thermal lensing behaviors. An explanation of this phenomenon is provided from basic physical concepts.  相似文献

We might be at the turning point where research in microfluidics undertaken in academia and industrial research laboratories, and substantially sponsored by public grants, may provide a range of portable and networked diagnostic devices. In this Progress Report, an overview on microfluidic devices that may become the next generation of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics is provided. First, we describe gaps and opportunities in medical diagnostics and how microfluidics can address these gaps using the example of immunodiagnostics. Next, we conceptualize how different technologies are converging into working microfluidic POC diagnostics devices. Technologies are explained from the perspective of sample interaction with components of a device. Specifically, we detail materials, surface treatment, sample processing, microfluidic elements (such as valves, pumps, and mixers), receptors, and analytes in the light of various biosensing concepts. Finally, we discuss the integration of components into accurate and reliable devices.  相似文献

In recent years, a lot of attention has been paid to carbon nanotube (CNT) networks and their applications to electronic devices. Many studies concentrate on the percolation threshold and the characterization of the conduction in such materials. Nevertheless, no theoretical study has yet attempted to characterize the CNT features inside finite size CNT networks. We present a theoretical approach based on geometrical and statistical considerations. We demonstrate the possibility of explicitly determining some relations existing between two neighbor CNTs and their contact efficiency in random networks of identical CNTs. We calculate the contact probability of rigid identical CNTs and we obtain a probability of 0.2027, which turns out to be independent of the CNT density. Based on this probability, we establish also the dependence of the number of contacts per CNT as a function of the CNT density. All the theoretical results are validated by very good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

New very high permeability dialysis membranes have been developed to enable the clearance of free light chains in myeloma cast nephropathy. These new dialysis techniques, in combination with chemotherapy, should allow improved prognosis in patients with myeloma cast nephropathy. We report a prospective observational study comparing patients who underwent hemodialysis in our center in 2009 for cast nephropathy revealing multiple myeloma vs. patients treated for the same condition during the same period in other centers in our region. The main difference in the management protocols was the use of high cutoff (HCO) membranes in our center. We described the clinical features, the management protocols, and the outcomes as of June 1, 2010. In 2009, five patients were treated for myeloma cast nephropathy with HCO hemodialysis in our center. At 386 ± 100 days follow‐up, one patient died, while three of the five patients recovered their renal function, allowing cessation of hemodialysis. During the same period, five patients were treated for myeloma cast nephropathy in other centers in our region. At 398 ± 131 days follow‐up, four patients died, and none of the patients recovered renal function, allowing cessation of hemodialysis. In our study, light chain clearance allowed recovery of renal function and cessation of hemodialysis in three of five patients with acute kidney injury secondary to myeloma cast nephropathy. A randomized trial comparing this technique with conventional hemodialysis techniques should be conducted to raise the level of proof for this therapeutic option. The overall prognosis, including quality of life and cost‐effectiveness, of HCO hemodialysis should also be examined.  相似文献

To speed up research on the usefulness and selection of bacterial starter cultures for cocoa bean fermentation, a benchmark cocoa bean fermentation process under natural fermentation conditions was developed successfully. Therefore, spontaneous fermentations of cocoa pulp-bean mass in vessels on a 20 kg scale were tried out in triplicate. The community dynamics and kinetics of these fermentations were studied through a multiphasic approach. Microbiological analysis revealed a limited bacterial species diversity and targeted community dynamics of both lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and acetic acid bacteria (AAB) during fermentation, as was the case during cocoa bean fermentations processes carried out in the field. LAB isolates belonged to two main (GTG)5-PCR clusters, namely Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus fermentum, with Fructobacillus pseudofilculneus occurring occasionally; one main (GTG)5-PCR cluster, composed of Acetobacter pasteurianus, was found among the AAB isolates, besides minor clusters of Acetobacter ghanensis and Acetobacter senegalensis. 16S rRNA-PCR-DGGE revealed that L. plantarum and L. fermentum dominated the fermentations from day two until the end and Acetobacter was the only AAB species present at the end of the fermentations. Also, species of Tatumella and Pantoea were detected culture-independently at the beginning of the fermentations. Further, it was shown through metabolite target analyses that similar substrate consumption and metabolite production kinetics occurred in the vessels compared to spontaneous cocoa bean fermentation processes. Current drawbacks of the vessel fermentations encompassed an insufficient mixing of the cocoa pulp-bean mass and retarded yeast growth.  相似文献
