Electronic and magnetic properties of ultra-thin epitaxial magnetite films on MgO(001)

The electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial Fe₃O₄ (001) films on MgO(100) substrates were studied throughout the 2.5- to 30-nm thickness range using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. Despite the superparamagnetism that was observed for film thickness below 5 nm, the Verwey transition persisted even for the thinnest film. Temperature-dependent Mössbauer measurements between 80 K and 400 K revealed that the activation energy for the magnetic moment fluctuations in the 3-nm magnetite film is higher than the magnetic anisotropy energy by an order of magnitude.     

AN IMPROVED VOLUMENOMETER*

A volumcnometer of improved design has been developed for measuring the solid volumes of specimens varying in size up to that of standard refractory bricks. The chief feature of the new design is the use of a closed-cistern, altitude-type mercurial barometer to replace the simple manometer previously used. The barometer is de signed for use in a constant temperature room (21.1°C.) where the acceleration of gravity is 980.1 cm. per sec.². Under these conditions, pressure readings are auto matically corrected to standard conditions. A vernier permits rapid readings to 0.1 mm. of mercury.     

Histone Deacetylases Function in the Control of Early Hematopoiesis and Erythropoiesis

Numerous studies have highlighted the role of post-translational modifications in the regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation and death. Among these modifications, acetylation modifies the physicochemical properties of proteins and modulates their activity, stability, localization and affinity for partner proteins. Through the deacetylation of a wide variety of functional and structural, nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins, histone deacetylases (HDACs) modulate important cellular processes, including hematopoiesis, during which different HDACs, by controlling gene expression or by regulating non-histone protein functions, act sequentially to provide a fine regulation of the differentiation process both in early hematopoietic stem cells and in more mature progenitors. Considering that HDAC inhibitors represent promising targets in cancer treatment, it is necessary to decipher the role of HDACs during hematopoiesis which could be impacted by these therapies. This review will highlight the main mechanisms by which HDACs control the hematopoietic stem cell fate, particularly in the erythroid lineage.     

Exploiting information extraction techniques for automatic semantic video indexing with an application to Turkish news videos

This paper targets at the problem of automatic semantic indexing of news videos by presenting a video annotation and retrieval system which is able to perform automatic semantic annotation of news video archives and provide access to the archives via these annotations. The presented system relies on the video texts as the information source and exploits several information extraction techniques on these texts to arrive at representative semantic information regarding the underlying videos. These techniques include named entity recognition, person entity extraction, coreference resolution, and semantic event extraction. Apart from the information extraction components, the proposed system also encompasses modules for news story segmentation, text extraction, and video retrieval along with a news video database to make it a full-fledged system to be employed in practical settings. The proposed system is a generic one employing a wide range of techniques to automate the semantic video indexing process and to bridge the semantic gap between what can be automatically extracted from videos and what people perceive as the video semantics. Based on the proposed system, a novel automatic semantic annotation and retrieval system is built for Turkish and evaluated on a broadcast news video collection, providing evidence for its feasibility and convenience for news videos with a satisfactory overall performance.     

Transmutation-incineration potential of transuraniums discharged from PWR-UO2 spent fuel in modified PROMETHEUS fusion reactor

This study presents the potential of the burning and/or transmutation (B/T) of transuraniums (TRUs), discharged from the pressured water reactor PWR-UO₂ spent fuel, in the modified PROMETHEUS-H fusion reactor. Two different design shapes (Models A and B) were considered. The transmutation zone (TZ), which contains the mixture of TRU nuclides (10%), was located in the modified blankets. The volume fraction of Pu in the mixture is raised from 0 to 40% stepped by 10% to determine its effect on the B/T. The fuel spheres were cladded with SiC (5%) and cooled with high-pressured helium gas (85%) for nuclear heat transfer. The calculations were performed for an operation period (OP) of up to 10 years by 75% plant factor (η) under a neutron wall load (P) of 4.7 MW/m². The results bring out that: (1) the Model B transmutes the TRUs more rapidly than the Model A; (2) the effective half-lives decrease about 20 and 40% with the increase of Pu fraction in the cases of Models A and B, respectively; (3) the M values are quite high with respect to the M value of the original PROMETHEUS fusion reactor; (4) the blankets can produce substantial electricity in situ.     

Electrocodeposition and characterization of cobalt lanthanide oxides composite coatings

Composite coatings were prepared by electrodeposition of cobalt and the following lanthanide oxides: CeO₂, Nd₂O₃, La₂O₃ and Y₂O₃. The morphology and the particle content of the layers were characterized and their dependence on the deposition parameters is discussed. The highest particle incorporation achieved was 35 wt.% CeO₂ within the cobalt matrix. The amount of incorporated particles (in wt.%) decreased in the order CeO₂ > Y₂O₃ > Nd₂O₃ > La₂O₃. In order to evaluate the improvement of the corrosion resistance of the Cobalt matrix due to the incorporation of lanthanide oxide particles, the electrochemical behaviour of the composite films was studied by linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in chloride containing solutions. In comparison with pure Co, Co-Nd₂O₃, Co-La₂O₃ and Co-Y₂O₃ the Co-CeO₂ composite coatings showed a superior corrosion resistance in 0.1 M NaCl.     

Improved synthesis of an aldobiouronic acid related to hardwood xylans, and preparation of a derivative thereof suitable for linking to proteins

We investigated the expression pattern of the endothelin-A receptor and endothelin 1 genes, the mutations of which affect the development of the mesectodermal derivatives of the neural crest. We show here that endothelin 1 is expressed by the environment of the cephalic neural crest cells invading branchial arches. Later on, while the neural crest-derived tissues of the head continue to express endothelin-A receptor, endothelin 1 is no longer expressed in their environment.

The phase equilibria have been expressed by x-y-diagrams in the isothermic procedure according to Williams using a one step thin-layer rotation evaporator. The obtained data are important for separation of tocopherol from the deodorization condensate.
