Thermal Performance Analysis of Highly Reflective Coating on Residences in Hot and Arid Climates

A 1-D transient model (RESHEAT), developed by the writers, was used to study the thermal performance of a highly reflective paint applied sequentially to the outer walls and roof of a simulated residence in a hot and arid region of the southwestern United States. The model uses climatological inputs from a file that includes hourly data on ambient temperatures, insolation, cloud cover, and so on, at the particular location. The model focuses particularly on the potential cooling load reduction due to the reduced heat pickup from the inside attic surfaces to the outer surfaces of the supply duct. This simulation showed that a reduction of 33.6% (cooling load) on the average is achieved over the base case where no reflective paint is used when the outer surface of the roof and walls are painted. Alternatively, only a 11% reduction would be achieved if the reflective paint is applied only to the roof. Savings of $42 per month are conservatively estimated from calculations made when applying this technology to a typical residence (roof and walls) equipped with a 4 ton refrigeration unit in the Southwest.     

Responsibility and the elderly: Applications to psychotherapy.

Based on the analysis of P. Brickman et al (see record 1982-30315-001), 4 models of psychotherapy are proposed. It is argued that a key element in clinical interventions with the elderly is the extent to which the intervention affects the elderly clients' perceived responsibility for the cause of and solution to their presenting complaints. Female lives, feminist deaths: The relationship of the Montreal massacre to dissociation, incest, and violence against women.

Discusses the mass murder of 14 women in Montreal in 1989 in the context of the author's work with incest survivors. It is claimed that the massacre of 14 women by a mysogynist male can be placed in a context and viewed as a public version of the private lives of abused women, one end of a broad spectrum of misogynist rage and violence that can erupt at any time against randomly selected women in the forms of rape, incest, battering, harassment, vilification, and abuse. Models of helping and coping.

Draws a distinction between attribution of responsibility for a problem and attribution of responsibility for a solution. Four general helping models are derived. In the "moral" model, actors are held responsible for both problems and solutions and are believed to need only proper motivation. In the compensatory model, people are responsible only for solutions and are believed to need power. Individuals in the medical model are responsible for neither problems nor solutions and are thought to need treatment. In the enlightenment model, actors are responsible for problems but are unable or unwilling to provide solutions; they need discipline. It is maintained that each set of assumptions has characteristic consequences for the competence, status, and well-being of actors and that the wrong choice of model in a situation will undermine effective helping and coping. Competing models of responsibility in education, psychotherapy, law, and welfare are described, and research on attribution of responsibility is recommended as a way of addressing problems of both theoretical and social significance. Do neuropsychological tests have the same meaning in Spanish speakers as they do in English speakers?

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether neuropsychological tests translated into Spanish measure the same cognitive constructs as the original English versions. Method: Older adult participants (N = 2,664), who did not exhibit dementia from the Washington Heights Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP), a community-based cohort from northern Manhattan, were evaluated with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. The study cohort includes both English (n = 1,800) and Spanish speakers (n = 864) evaluated in their language of preference. Invariance analyses were conducted across language groups on a structural equation model comprising four neuropsychological factors (memory, language, visual-spatial ability, and processing speed). Results: The results of the analyses indicated that the four-factor model exhibited partial measurement invariance, demonstrated by invariant factor structure and factor loadings but nonequivalent observed score intercepts. Conclusion: The finding of invariant factor structure and factor loadings provides empirical evidence to support the implicit assumption that scores on neuropsychological tests are measuring equivalent psychological traits across these two language groups. The phenotype of SLE associated with complete deficiency of complement isotype C4A

Authors present a multiparameter pathological study in a case of rapid biclonal primary plasma cell leukemia. The immunohistochemical data revealed aberrant phenotypes (monocyte, epithelial and T-cell) probably in connection with microenvironmental influences. Biclonality can be attributed to class switching during malignant transformation. Static image cytometry showed aneuploidy. The blasts of this process are active immunoregulatory cells.     

"Object"? I object.

It is time for psychoanalytic discourse to retire the term “object.” The term has become ambiguous, has become anachronistic, and has misleading and even deleterious connotations. It misconstrues the process of internalization as interpreted by contemporary theories and approaches. It also contributes to the impression that psychoanalysis is unconcerned with the kinds of relational and interpersonal factors that have assumed center stage in much analytic thinking. This article addresses different ways that internalizations have been construed and described, and modern concepts of drives that do not require this syntax in order to describe processes of mental representation. Laser chemistry experiments with UF6

This paper summarizes the results of research in a number of different areas of the laser chemistry of UF6. These include: IR excitation and unimolecular dissociation; two color IR excitation; atom-molecule reactions; and UV photodissociation and photochemistry.     

Analytical critique of hexitols used as a cooking medium

Analysis by differential scanning calorimetry and gas liquid chromatography of hexitol blends used as a roasting medium for peanuts demonstrated that there was no significant deterioration of the hexitol components due to prolonged repetitive heating. Small decreases in the hexitol content of the roasting medium, which were found after 72 hr at a temperature of 330 F, closely corresponded to the increases in the hexitan content. Furthermore no evidence could be found of any significant oxidative degradation products in any of the polyol samples analyzed.
