Fate of the promastigotes of Leishmania tropica major and L. gymnodactyli in the body of Phlebotomus papatasi under conditions of a mixed infection

We have shown that 8S and U2 fractions of low molecular weight nuclear RNA lmwn RNA) have tow stable conformational states with different electrophoretic mobilities. We have shown also that fractions UIa and UIb are conformational isomers. Fractions 8S and U2 are present only in one conformational state during electrophoresis, while UI RNA is always represented by both conformations. The conformation of lmwn RNAs is dependent upon conditions of isolation of nuclei and of extraction of RNA. It may change during storage of water solution of RNA at -20 degrees. Conformational changes discovered are not the result of degradation. Only one of two stable conformations of any lmwn RNA may be physiologically active, as it is the case of 5S rRNA and tRNAS. One ought to keep this in mind while studying the functions of low molecular weight nuclear RNAs.     

Infection of the urinary tract after anti-reflux surgery

Two hundred twenty-three children who underwent anti-reflux surgery were evaluated. Pyelonephritic scarring was more apt to occur with greater degrees of reflux. Postoperative infection was principally confined to the bladder and occurred primarily in females. The beneficial effect of anti-reflux surgery is discussed.     

Surgical preparation of miniature swine for atherosclerosis research

A 2-stage surgical procedure for chronic intestinal, vascular, and lymphatic sampling in miniature swine is described. Cannulas were placed in the jejunum and ileum, followed by a 2nd implantation of indwelling catheters in the portal and hepatic veins, caudal vena cava, abdominal aorta, and cisterna chyli. The techniques used proved that miniature swine can be surgically adapted to meet experimental requirements.     

Acromegaly caused by pulmonary carcinoid tumours

Vascular input impedance and associated hydraulic power was measured in rabbit isolated lungs. The study was focused on changes in impedance and in pulsatile hydraulic power during relaxation and contraction of vascular smooth muscle. Pulsatile power was found to be at a minimum when smooth muscle tone was such that the pulmonary arterial pressure was in the physiological range, and increased both when the vessels were relaxed and further constricted. Input impedance was found to be determined mainly by the large, proximal ('extra-alveolar') arteries.     

The Canadian influenza decision, 1976

This paper explains the Canadian decision process following the isolation and identification of A/New Jersey/8/76 at Fort Dix, New Jersey in February 1976. The cause for concern was the emergence of a swine-like strain related to that which caused the 1918-19 pandemic, together with proved man-to-man transmission. This concern was reinforced since all new influenza A strains known to have infected the number of persons involved at Fort Dix have become strains of epidemic importance. The Fort Dix outbreak gave sufficient warning to allow implementation of a national vaccination program, to prevent and protect against influenza. In the past such an opportunity had not occurred, and vaccine use had, at best, constituted an intervention in the course of an outbreak. The National Advisory Committee on Immunizing Agents had all available information when it reached its decision to recommend vaccination with bivalent (A/Victoria and A/New Jersey) or with monovalent (A/New Jersey) vaccine for selective, high-risk groups. This was an independent, scientifically based decision.     

Calcareous deposits formed on IUDs in human exposures

Characteristics of the calcareous deposits on several hundred IUDs of various designs and materials following in vivo exposures were examined, and an in vitro method of study was devised. There were 650 copper-wound IUDs and 18 plastic IUDs. The copper-wound IUDs had been in the uteri for 6-27 months; the plastic IUDs for 3 months to over 8 years. Microscopic examinations, X-ray diffraction, weight changes, and chemical analyses were used. X-ray diffraction showed that calcite (CaCO3) was the major crystalline constituent of the calcareous deposits. A large fraction of the deposited material was organic. Surfaces in contact with the uterine wall were essentially free of depos its. Microscopic inspection of copper-wound IUDs revealed the amount of deposit. Length of exposure increased the amount of deposit, but there were marked variations in amount. Accumulation of deposits was mostly at the fundal end. More marked local erosion of copper was noted where there was little or no carbonate deposit. Deposits occurred in patches on Lippes loops and Margulies spirals. The in vitro carbonate deposits did not reproduce the rates or morphology of the in vivo deposits. Variations in uterine carbonate formation are attributed to differences in uterine chemistry of individuals.     

Relationship of passive cigarette-smoking to sudden infant death syndrome

The smoking habits of 56 families who lost babies to the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) were compared to those of 86 control families. A higher proportion of SIDS mothers smoked both during pregnancy (61% vs. 42%) and after their babies were born (59% vs. 37%). SIDS mother also smoked a significantly greater number of cigarettes than controls. Exposure to cigarette smoke ("passive smoking") appears to enhance the risk of SIDS for reasons not known.     

The species specificity of fish and mammalian gonadotropic hormones

Protein spectra of the hypophyses of fishes from various taxonomic groups obtained by disc electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel exhibit high species specificity. By means of biological testing on the loach Misgurnus fossilis, zones of gonadotropic activity were obtained which differ in various species by the electrophoretic mobility. The mammalian gonadotropins obtained reveal lower electrophoretic mobility. The gonadotropins investigated significantly differ in their biological effect.
