Spinal neurilemmomas and neurofibromas: central dot sign in postgadolinium MRI

The MR studies of three histologically proven spinal neurilemmomas and neurofibromas were reviewed retrospectively. There were two benign neurilemmomas (schwannomas) and one neurofibroma. The common characteristic of these cases was a central low intensity focus ("dot") seen on postcontrast T1-weighted imaging. The low intensity foci corresponded histologically to a congeries of changes including edema, microcysts, foam cells, hyalinization of blood vessels, old hemorrhage, and dystrophic calcification.     

Accessory artificial circulation in complex treatment of experimental acute toxic pulmonary edema

In experiments on 50 dogs with toxic acute edema of the lung, induced with intravenous injection of 0.1% silver nitrate, the authors have studied the efficacy of accessory artificial circulation and "conservative" therapy. During the perfusion a discharge of the right portions, adequate extracorporeal gas metabolism, normalization of blood gas and acid-base balance were noted; an intensity of pulmonary edema is descreased. An intensive therapy for pulmonary edema was found to be more effective in association of "conservative" treatment with venoarterial perfusion and blood oxygenation.     

Nitrous oxide "analgesia": resemblance to opiate action

Nitrous oxide produced a dose-related "analgesia" in mice (median effective dose, 55 percent). The analgesia was evaluated by means of a phenylquinone writhing test. Narcotic antagonists or chronic morphinization reduced nitrous oxide analgesia. Either nitrous oxide releases an endogenous analgesic or narcotic antagonists have analgesic antagonist properties heretofore unappreciated.     

m-Chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) Modulates the Discriminative Stimulus Effects of Cocaine Through Actions at the 5-HT?C Receptor.

Agonists acting at the serotonin-1B receptor (5-HT?BR) and 5-HT?CR have been reported to potentiate and block, respectively, the discriminative stimulus effects of cocaine. The present investigation reassessed the antagonistic effects of the mixed 5-HT?C/?BR agonist m-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) on the discriminative stimulus effects of cocaine in the presence or absence of selective antagonism of the 5-HT?BR or 5-HT?CR. The stimulus effects of cocaine were attenuated by mCPP at doses that reduced response rates. The selective 5-HT?CR antagonist SB 242084, but not the selective 5-HT?BR antagonist GR 127935, reversed the mCPP-evoked attenuation of the cocaine cue and the suppression of response rates. These results demonstrate that the suppressive effects of mCPP on cocaine discrimination are related to stimulation of the HT?CR. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

A study and optoelectronic verification of AlGaAs/GaAsheterojunction bipolar transistor large-signal characteristics

A hybrid optoelectronic measurement system is constructed and used to obtain the large-signal characteristics of AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors. The measurement system utilizes a terahertz-bandwidth electrooptic transducer gated by 100-fs laser pulses to interrogate the time-domain waveforms at the device input and output nodes. A microwave signal phase-locked to the laser pulse-train is used to synchronously excite the device in both small-signal and large-signal regimes. The measurement system is capable of 50-GHz bandwidth and provides time-domain voltage waveforms that can be used directly to verify the time-domain results of the large-signal analysis
