Records were reviewed of 108 consecutive patients with a variety of surgically approachable malignancies undergoing scalene node biopsy as part of a preoperative staging evaluation. Metastases to the scalene nodes were detected in 12 patients (11.1%). In six patients the scalene nodes were clinically suspicious before biopsy, but in six with nonpalpable nodes the scalene metastases were occult clinically. Four of the patients with clinically benign, but pathologically positive, scalene biopsies were found among the group of 62 patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix. It was concluded that routine scalene biopsies are justified in the properative evaluation of cancer patients only if the nodes are clinically suspicious, except for in patients with advanced pelvic cancers, in whom the incidence of completely occult scalene metastases is 6% or more.  相似文献

Studies on the circular dichroic spectrum of cobalt-substituted concanavalin A have been continued in particular with respect to calcium- and saccharide-induced spectral pertubations reported previously (Kalb, A.J. and Pecht, I. (1973) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 303, 264-268; Richardson, C.E. and Behnke, W.D. (1976) J. Mol. Biol. 102, 441-451). We find that the addition of calcium or cadmium to (CO2+)-concanavalin A induces slow time-dependent alterations in the extrinsic cotton effects. Moreover, one equivalent of calcium is sufficient to cause maximal changes in the cobalt spectrum provided sufficient time is allowed for the effect to be observed. The addition of mono, di-and trisaccharides, specific for concanavalin A, have no resolvable effect upon the cobalt spectrum of concanavalin A (Richardson, C.E. and Behnke, W.D. (1976) J. Mol. Biol. 102, 441-451). The data presented here suggest that these time-dependent processes are conformationally mediated and occur subsequent to S2 occupancy. Evidence is presented that a particular calcium-cobalt-concanavalin A conformer exists which is responsible for the generation of activity in a light-scattering assay system.  相似文献

Retinal folds were found in 5 cats. The apparent cause of the folding was varied: in 1 cat the folds appeared after a localized retinal detachment; in 2 cats the condition accompanied other intraocular abnormalities associated with feline infectious peritonitis; 1 cat had active keratitis, and the retinal changes were thought to have been injury related; and 1 cat, bilaterally affected, had chronic glomerulonephritis.  相似文献

Designing a drug is the process of finding or creating a molecule which has a specific activity on a biological organism. Drug design is difficult since there are only few molecules that are both effective against a certain disease and exhibit other necessary physiological properties, such as absorption by the body and safety of use. The main problem of drug design is therefore how to explore the chemical space of many possible molecules to find the few suitable ones. Computational methods are increasingly being used for this purpose, among them evolutionary algorithms. This review will focus on the applications of evolutionary algorithms in drug design, in which evolutionary algorithms are used both to create new molecules and to construct methods for predicting the properties of real or yet unexisting molecules. We will also discuss the progress and problems of application of evolutionary algorithms in this field, as well as possible developments and future perspectives.  相似文献
