The impact of demographic, lifestyle, and seminal factors on the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) parameters was evaluated in a population of 277 healthy Danish men. This cohort was established within the framework of a European Concerted Action on occupational hazards to male reproductive capability in order to examine the possible reproductive effects of exposure to styrene or pesticides. The SCSA measures the susceptibility of sperm DNA to in-situ acid-induced denaturation, by multiparameter flow cytometric analysis after staining with the DNA-specific fluorescent dye acridine orange. The green versus red bivariate cytogram patterns were quite variable among donors, showing a wide heterogeneity of sperm DNA denaturability. Nevertheless, in those cases where we had the possibility to measure two semen samples from the same donor, the cytogram pattern remained stable over time (0.64 < r < 0.78). Analysis of variance demonstrated that the SCSA results can be influenced by the age of the donor (P < 0.0001), smoking habits (P < 0.05), the presence of leukocytes and immature germ forms in the ejaculate (P < 0.0001), and the duration of sexual abstinence (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the relationship between the SCSA data and sperm concentration, morphology, and vitality was weak (-0.22 < r < -0.46). Therefore, the SCSA provides independent and complementary measurements of semen quality and is thus a useful tool for epidemiological studies, but the effects of some confounders should be accounted for in the survey design and analysis. 相似文献

We study magnetic-field directed self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles onto templates recorded on perpendicular magnetic recording media, and quantify feature width and height as a function of assembly time. Feature widths are determined from Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images, while heights are obtained with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). For short assembly times, widths were ~150 nm, while heights were ~14 nm, a single nanoparticle on average with a 10:1 aspect ratio. For long assembly times, widths approach 550 nm, while the average height grows to 3 nanoparticles, ~35 nm; a 16:1 aspect ratio. We perform magnetometry on these self-assembled structures and observe the slope of the magnetic moment vs. field curve increases with time. This increase suggests magnetic nanoparticle interactions evolve from nanoparticle–nanoparticle interactions to cluster–cluster interactions as opposed to feature–feature interactions. We suggest the aspect ratio increase occurs because the magnetic field gradients are strongest near the transitions between recorded regions in perpendicular media. If these gradients can be optimized for assembly, strong potential exists for using perpendicular recording templates to assemble complex heterogeneous materials. 相似文献

A reaction pathway is proposed to explain the formation of end products during defined chemical reactions between carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and either metal complexes of pyridine-2,6-bis(thiocarboxylic acid) (PDTC) or pure cultures of Pseudomonas stutzeri KC. The pathway includes one-electron reduction of CCl4 by the Cu(II):PDTC complex, condensation of trichloromethyl and thiyl radicals, and hydrolysis of a labile thioester intermediate. Products detected were carbon dioxide, chloride, carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and dipicolinic acid. Spin-trapping and electrospray MS/MS experiments gave evidence of trichloromethyl and thiyl radicals generated by reaction of CCl4 with PDTC and copper. Experiments testing the effects of transition metals showed that dechlorination by PDTC requires copper and is inhibited by cobalt but not by iron or nickel. PDTC was shown to react stoichiometrically rather than catalytically without added reducing equivalents. With added reductants, an increased turnover was seen along with increased chloroform production. 相似文献

This paper will deal with various methods of torque control for two-drum winders, some that have been more common in the past and others that have come into use in recent years. Before looking into specific methods of torque control, consideration will be given as to just what function the winder (any winder) performs, the type of operation required on two drum winders to accomplish this function, and how torque control can give this desired operation. Other factors influencing the quality of the rewound roll such as sheet quality, back-stand tension control, and rider roll pressure control will be discussed briefly. Areas (including grades and quality of web) where high back-stand tension or rider roll pressure cannot be utilized for roll density and therefore roll quality will be explained to emphasize the need for positive dependable torque control. Various methods of torque control will be considered along with advantages and disadvantages of each. The study of the architecture of the optic nerve head (ONH) may provide valuable information about the development and progression of glaucoma. To this end, we have generated three-dimensional datasets from monkey eyes under controlled intraocular pressure (IOP). Segmentation of the connective tissues in this area is crucial to obtain an accurate measurement of geometrical parameters and to build mechanical models. However, this segmentation is made difficult by the complicated geometry and the artifacts introduced in the dataset building process. We present a novel segmentation algorithm, based on expectation-maximization, which incorporates an anisotropic Markov random field (MRF) to introduce prior knowledge about the geometry of the structure. The structure tensor is used to characterize the predominant structure direction and the spatial coherence at each point. The algorithm, which has been validated on an artificial validation dataset that mimics our ONH datasets, shows significant improvement over an isotropic MRF. Results on the real datasets demonstrate the ability of the new algorithm to obtain accurate, spatially consistent segmentations of this structure. 相似文献

This paper presents a full reconstruction process of magnetic resonance images. The first step is to bring the acquired data from the frequency domain, using a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. A Tomographic Image Interpolation is then used to transform a sequence of tomographic slices in an isotropic volume data set, a process also called 3D Reconstruction. This work describes an automatic method whose interpolation stage is based on a previous matching stage using Delaunay Triangulation.
