Bilateral femoral neck fractures as a complication of myelography

This paper discusses two cases of bilateral subcapital fracture of the proximal femur as a complication of myelography with Conray 60. The literature is reviewed.     

Some biochemical aspects of the enzymic transformation of cortisol with Bacillus cereus

The role of a variety of compounds including organic acids, vitamins, growth promoting substances, purines and pyrimidines in the bioconversion of cortisol with Bacillus cereus was investigated. The transformation of cortisol to prednisolone and pregn-4-en-11beta, 17alpha,20beta, 21-tetrol-3-one was affected by these compounds in different manners. The enzymatic delta1-dehydrogenation reaction was greatly induced with fumarate, menadione, and xanthine treatments. However, the enzymic reduction of the 20-carbonyl to the 20beta-ol was specifically stimulated with fumarate, nicotinic acid amide, and uracil treatments.     

Design approach to low-cost process control

The design of a control package for industrial use on small-scale processes is discussed. A modular system is described, made up of intelligent satellite and peripheral controllers plus various cards to provide communication with the industrial plant itself. The design is intended for operators who have little or no experience of computing. It is based on a language called paracode, an interpretive language structured to provide a number of control sequences which can run independently of each other or in parallel. Two applications of the design—a clean-in-place system and a beer-fermentation controller—are used as illustrations.     

Isolation of a spontaneous CHO amino acid transport mutant by a combination of tritium suicide and replica plating

A spontaneous transport mutant of Chinese hamster ovary cells, CHY-1, was isolated by a combination of [3H]proline suicide and replica plating. The mutant took up less tritium than the parent, resulting in a lower killing rate during storage. Transport by four separate amino acid transport systems (A, ASC, L, Ly+) was examined. The CHY-1 mutant exhibited normal uptake via the ASC, L, and Ly+ systems. By contrast, uptake of the most specific substrate of the A system, 2-(methylamino)-isobutyric acid, was significantly reduced at low, but not high, concentrations, due to a 3.5-fold increase in Km and a 1.5-fold increase in Vmax. Taken together, these data suggest that the CHY-1 mutation may be in the structural gene coding for the A transport protein. The tritium suicide procedure is discussed, and general equations are derived to predict the maximum storage time for the survival of one mutant cell and the optimum size of the cell population for maximum mutant enrichment.     

Five-year survival in persons aged 40 years or over with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus

The five- to six-year all-cause mortality is analysed in 1323 newly diagnosed diabetic patients aged 40 years or over. The median age at diagnosis is lower for males (63.6 years) than for females (67.5 years), but more males (24.7%) than females (20.0%) have died (p = 0.04). This male excess mortality can mainly be attributed to the 60-79-year old males. With increasing diabetes duration both male and female diabetic patients exhibit an increasing excess mortality in comparison with the Danish population. For males this excess mortality becomes statistically significant four years after diagnosis for the 40-59 year-olds and after six years for the 60-79 year-olds. For females and very old males no statistically significant excess mortality is observed, but after two to four years there is a tendency for the survival curve of 40-79-year old females to separate from that of the Danish female population to show an excess mortality. In this population-based study the disadvantageous mortality experience of even newly-diagnosed diabetic patients is clearly demonstrated.
