Classification of melanoma using tree structured wavelet transforms

This paper presents a wavelet transform based tree structure model developed and evaluated for the classification of skin lesion images into melanoma and dysplastic nevus. The tree structure model utilizes a semantic representation of the spatial-frequency information contained in the skin lesion images including textural information. Results show that the presented method is effective in discriminating melanoma from dysplastic nevus. The results are also compared with those obtained using another method of developing tree structures utilizing the maximum channel energy criteria with a fixed energy ratio threshold.     

Study of air oxidation of amorphous Zr<Subscript>65</Subscript>Cu<Subscript>17.5</Subscript>Ni<Subscript>10</Subscript>Al<Subscript>7.5</Subscript> by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)

The oxidation of the bulk amorphous alloy Zr₆₅Cu_17.5Ni₁₀Al_7.5 in air in its amorphous and the supercooled liquid states was studied in the temperature range 573–663 K using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxide film mainly consisted of the oxides of Zr (as ZrO₂) and Al (as Al₂O₃). No Cu or Ni was found in the oxide film formed on the amorphous state of the alloy while significant Cu (as CuO) was present in the oxide film formed on the alloy in its supercooled liquid state. The role of the various alloying elements during oxidation at high temperatures in air is discussed in the paper. The XPS data from oxide film support the previously suggested mechanism for oxidation of this alloy, i.e. the rate controlling process during oxidation of the alloy at low temperatures (in the amorphous state) is the back-diffusion of Ni and Cu, while the oxidation at high temperatures (in the supercooled liquid state) is dominated by the inward diffusion of oxygen.     

Growth rate characteristics of acoustic neuromas associated with neurofibromatosis type 2

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a dominantly inherited disorder characterized by the occurrence of bilateral acoustic neuromas (ANs and other central nervous system tumors. Magnetic resonance images and audiologic data on 22 patients with NF2 who underwent multiple studies at the National Institutes of Health between 1983 and 1993 were reviewed to determine the growth characteristics of ANs in these patients. The average growth rate of ANs in NF2 patients was 0.30 cm3 per year and was significantly higher in older patients (0.75 cm3 per year) than in younger ones (0.12 cm3 per year). Larger ANs were more commonly found in patients with concomitant spinal tumors or meningiomas. NF2 patients with spinal tumors but not meningiomas demonstrated faster growth rates than patients without additional tumor burden. The data from this study suggest that older patients or patients with associated spinal tumors have faster growing ANs and therefore should be followed closely and treated aggressively.     

A retrograde fluorescent-labeling study of direct relationship between the limbic (anterodorsal and anteroventral thalamic nuclei) and the visual system in the albino rat

Case-control methodology was used to assess lung cancer risk from exposure to arsenic in air, employing data from former workers in different units at the Chuquicamata copper mine and smelter complex. Thirty two workers from this complex were identified among the lung cancer deaths that occurred in the Northern region of Chile between 1987 and 1991. Each case was matched on age and sex, with controls that had a similar date of enrolment in the company. Available data on arsenic concentrations in air for six work sites were compiled from 1952 to 1991 and these were used to categorize the workplaces: Administrative area (1.6 micrograms/m3), Mine (2.3 micrograms/m3), Oxid Plant (3.1 micrograms/m3), Workshop and Services (9.8 micrograms/m3), Sulphur Plant (8.4 micrograms/m3) and Smelter (201.7 micrograms/m3). The results indicate an Odds Ratio of 5.7 (Fisher's p = 0.016) of dying from lung cancer among workers of the smelter compared with the rest of the workers.     

Facial myokymia and spastic paretic facial contracture as the result of anaplastic pontocerebellar glioma

The case of a 36-year-old man who sought treatment of right facial myokymia and spastic paretic facial contracture is reported. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor located in the right cerebellar peduncle and the right dorsal pons bulging into the fourth ventricle. After microsurgical partial resection of the mass, which was verified histologically as an anaplastic glioma, facial myokymia initially ceased. The vermicular rippling movements were less intense upon recurrence and could be controlled by low-dose dexamethasone in the further course, when magnetic resonance imaging showed an interstitial pontine edema after percutaneous radiation therapy. It is assumed that facial myokymia and spastic paretic facial contracture were generated by ectopic activity due to alterations in the microenvironment at the intrapontine portion of the axons of the seventh nerve caused by the compressive effect of the tumor and later by edema.
