In rice, high concentration of lead (Pb) can cause phyto-toxicity affecting several physiological functions. Cultivation of rice varieties that are resistant to Pb-induced oxidative stress is an important management strategy in Pb-contaminated soils. In the current study, we evaluated four different rice cultivars for their response to Pb-induced stress. Three japonica type cultivars X-Jigna, Ediget, and Furat, and one Indica type cultivar Amber 33 were grown in soil containing different Pb concentrations (0 mM, 0.6 mM, and 1.2 mM). The soil was treated with 0 mM or 0.6 mM or 1.2 mM Pb solution one month prior to rice seedling transplantation. Thereafter, four-week-old rice seedlings were transplanted into the treated soil and their responses were observed until maturity. The data revealed that a highest concentration of Pb (1.2 mM) induced significant reduction in agronomic traits such as plant height, number of tillers per plant, number of panicles per plant, and number of spikelets per panicle in all the rice cultivars. However, least reduction in the agronomic traits was observed in X-Jigna, whereas the highest reduction in the agronomic traits was observed in Ediget. Antioxidant activity of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), was evaluated along with the accumulation of superoxide ions (O2.-), protein, proline, chlorophyll, sucrose, glucose, and fructose contents in all the rice cultivars. A significant increase in antioxidant activity and in the accumulation of proline and sucrose contents with the least reduction in the chlorophyll and protein contents was observed in X-Jigna suggesting that X-Jigna is the most tolerant among all the rice cultivars tested against Pb-stress. On the other hand, non-significant and slightly significant increase in the antioxidant activity, less accumulation of proline and sucrose contents, and higher reduction in the chlorophyll and protein contents was observed in Ediget, which further suggest that Ediget is the most susceptible rice cultivar to Pb-stress. In addition, the other rice cultivars Furat and Amber 33, were found to be moderately tolerant to Pb-induced oxidative stress. In summary, our results suggest that tolerance to Pb-induced oxidative stress would be a result of a synergetic action of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, leading to a balanced redox status in rice.
Diamond is not only a free standing highly transparent window but also a promising carrier confinement layer for InN based devices, yet little is known of the band offsets in InN/diamond system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to measure the energy discontinuity in the valence band offset (VBO) of InN/diamond heterostructure. The value of VBO was determined to be 0.39 ± 0.08 eV and a type-I heterojunction with a conduction band offset (CBO) of 4.42 ± 0.08 eV was obtained. STUDY DESIGN: Frameless stereotaxy with doppler ultrasound and three dimensional computer model registration is assessed in vitro for pedicle screw placement. OBJECTIVE: To identify feasibility of pedicle screw navigation and placement using this technology. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Inaccurate pedicle screw placement can lead to neurovascular injury or suboptimal fixation. Present techniques in pedicle screw placement involve only confirmation of hole orientation. METHOD: Forty-four pedicle screws were placed in lumbosacral models and cadaver specimens. Accuracy was assessed with a computed tomography scan and vertebral cross sectioning. RESULTS: All screws were intrapedicular. Accuracy of anterior cortical fixation was 1.5 mm, with a range of 2.5 mm. CONCLUSION: In vitro frameless stereotaxy is accurate for pedicle screw placement. This technology adds a component of navigation to pedicle screw placement. 相似文献
In order to further verify the proposed theory of cavitation resonance, as well as to proceed the investigations into microscopic level, a series of studies are being carried out on the Warwick venturi. The analysis of the oscillation characteristics of the cavitation resonance has conclusively verified the macro-mechanism proposed through previous studies on other cavitating flows by the authors. The initial observations using high-speed photographic approach have revealed a new attribution of cavitation resonance. That is, the volumetric oscillation of cavitation cloud is associated with the cavitation resonance, which is a collective behaviour of the bubbles in the cloud. 相似文献

Numerical results for both the error span recovery and its standard deviation show complete agreement with those obtained via the complex exact functions. PURPOSE: Optimization of image quality by use of digital luminescence radiography (DLR) in voiding cystoureterography (VCU) instead of a conventional screen film system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 53 patients with a suspected vesicouretral reflux were examined with a VCU in analogous and digital technique. The X-rays were taken in a sitting position while simultaneously measuring the bladder pressure. An intraindividual comparison was omitted for X-ray saving reasons. In the follow-up 3 patients were examined with the other system. Two radiologists and two urologists compared 60 VCU of 53 patients--30 VCU in conventional screen film and 30 in DLR technique presented in standard and edge-enhanced images--with regard to image quality according to 3-step score (A--good image quality, B--sufficient image quality, C--insufficient image quality). RESULTS: The 59 conventional films were scored 72 times with an A, 76 times with a B, and 72 times with a C, whereas the DLR films were scored 116 times with an A, 72 times with a B, and only 8 times with a C. Hereby the edge-enhanced images were the most useful for distinguishing the bladder shadow from the soft tissue of the thigh and for detecting reflux. Furthermore, the exposure dose when applying DLR could be decreased to 75% in grown-ups and to 57% in children without any significant loss of information. CONCLUSION: The DLR is highly superior to the conventional film screen system because of its relatively high tolerance towards wrong exposures, especially with respect of the sitting position during MCU. With the DLR we obtained 96% and with the conventional system only 63% films usable for diagnosis. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the presence of duodenal diverticula predisposes to the development of common bile duct stones. DESIGN: Cohort study; median follow-up, 10.0 years (25th and 75th percentiles, 5.2 and 16.1 years, respectively). SETTING: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS: One hundred fifty-seven patients with radiologically diagnosed duodenal diverticula who had undergone cholecystectomy from 1950 through 1987 and were asymptomatic at the initiation of follow-up. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: All patients were followed up for evidence of recurrent biliary tract disease to the following end points: (1) evidence of choledocholithiasis demonstrated by radiologic surgical, or biochemical means and (2) clinical or biochemical evidence of biliary pancreatitis. RESULTS: Of the 157 patients in the study cohort, 13 patients were categorized as having had recurrent biliary tract disease. Using the Kaplan-Meier survivorship method, the cumulative probabilities of recurrent biliary tract disease in patients with radiologically diagnosed duodenal diverticula were 3.6% at 5 years (95% confidence interval, 0.5-6.9), 5.5% at 10 years (95% confidence interval, 1.5-9.4), and 10.2% at 15 years (95% confidence interval, 3.8-16.7). Age, common bile duct exploration and choledochotomy, and the presence of common bile duct dilatation were not found to be significantly associated with recurrence based on a univariate analysis of risk factors by means of the log-rank statistic. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with radiologically diagnosed, second-portion duodenal diverticula, the risk of developing recurrent bile duct stones after cholecystectomy is lower than has been suggested in previous studies. In the absence of concurrent choledocholithiasis, sphincterotomy or biliary bypass at the time of cholecystectomy seems unwarranted. 相似文献
