Scalable attoliter monodisperse droplet formation using multiphase nano-microfluidics 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We demonstrate a robust method to produce monodisperse femtoliter to attoliter droplets by using a nano-microfluidic device.
Two immiscible liquids are forced through a nanochannel where a steady nanoscopic liquid filament forms, thinning close to
the nanochannel exit to a microchannel due to the capillary focusing. When the nanoscopic filament enters the microchannel,
monodisperse droplets are formed by capillary instability. In a certain range of physical parameters and geometrical configurations,
the droplet size is only determined by the nanochannel height and independent of liquid flow rates and ratios, surfactants,
and continuous phase viscosity. By using nanochannels with a height of 100–900 nm, 0.4–3.5 μm diameter droplets (volume down
to 30 aL) have been produced. The generated droplets are stable for at least weeks. 相似文献

The research aim was to select, compare, and analyze interventions and preventive actions from international bus companies to decrease bus drivers' occupational stress and sickness absenteeism. Through networking, international surveys, and literature study, 13 "natural experiments" were identified with an acceptable research design rating. Interventions were both work and person directed. Principles of worker participation were often followed. The variety in intervention programs, outcome measures, case evaluations, and methodological flaws makes it difficult to present a general picture of program effectiveness. However, analyses on more objective and more subjective outcomes do point at positive effects. This study suggests that stress prevention that combines adequate interventions and proper implementation may be beneficial to both the employee and the company. The muscular layer of the uterus (myometrium) undergoes profound changes in global excitability prior to parturition. Here, a mathematical model of the myocyte network is developed to investigate the hypothesis that spatial heterogeneity is essential to the transition from local to global excitation which the myometrium undergoes just prior to birth. Each myometrial smooth muscle cell is represented by an element with FitzHugh–Nagumo dynamics. The cells are coupled through resistors that represent gap junctions. Spatial heterogeneity is introduced by means of stochastic variation in coupling strengths, with parameters derived from physiological data. Numerical simulations indicate that even modest increases in the heterogeneity of the system can amplify the ability of locally applied stimuli to elicit global excitation. Moreover, in networks driven by a pacemaker cell, global oscillations of excitation are impeded in fully connected and strongly coupled networks. The ability of a locally stimulated cell or pacemaker cell to excite the network is shown to be strongly dependent on the local spatial correlation structure of the couplings. In summary, spatial heterogeneity is a key factor in enhancing and modulating global excitability. 相似文献

High-performing dairy cows require a particular composition of nutritional ingredients, adapted to their individual requirements and depending on their production status. The optimal dimensioning of minerals in the diet, one being potassium, is indispensable for the prevention of imbalances. Potassium balance in cows is the result of potassium intake, distribution in the organism, and excretion, and it is closely related to glucose and electrolyte metabolism. In this paper, we present a dynamical model for potassium balance in lactating and nonlactating dairy cows based on ordinary differential equations. Parameter values were obtained from clinical trial data and from the literature. To verify the consistency of the model, we present simulation outcomes for 3 different scenarios: potassium balance in (1) nonlactating cows with varying feed intake, (2) nonlactating cows with varying potassium fraction in the diet, and (3) lactating cows with varying milk production levels. The results give insights into the short- and long-term potassium metabolism, providing an important step toward the understanding of the potassium network, the design of prophylactic feed additives, and possible treatment strategies. 相似文献

An electrochemical measurement system with a high-speed camera for observation of dynamic behavior of ionic molecules at a water-in-oil interface during microfluidic droplet formation is described. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the system, a liquid interface between 1 M sodium chloride aqueous solution and 0.02 M tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate 1,2-dichloroethane solution was investigated. During aqueous droplet formation in a microfluidic device, averaged and dynamic currents between the two phases were measured under potential control. The measured current corresponded to the transport of electrolyte ions to form the electrical double layer at the liquid interface. When an 18-μm-sized droplet was formed in each 1.2 ms, the amount of charge on each droplet was measured to be 20 pC at 0.4 V and negligible at the potential of zero charge (0.19 V). In addition, the high-speed camera observations revealed that the charge affects the stability of the droplet during and/or just after the generation process. The kinetics of formation and growth of colloidal silver bromide particles haye been investigated. The particle radius has been determined by adsorption measurements and by electron microscopic recording.From all these tests it appears that at low temperature the growth of the octahedrons proceeds ,fasler than the growth of the cubes. At higher temperature this does not hold. A different dependence of temperature was,found for the nucleation, the precipitation and the physical ripening respectively. The physical ripening of {1OO} crystals IS determmed by a higher temperature dependence (E = 66 Kcal/mol).On the other hand, the energy of activatIOn of the Ostwald npenmg of the octahedrons IS very low (E = 8 Kcal/mol). 相似文献

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) equipment is used for commercially produce synthetic diamond and other polycrystalline products. The common denominator for almost all high-pressure systems is to use capsules where a powder material encloses the core material. In this work, the properties of CaCO3 powder up to ultra-high pressure have been studied using an instrumented Bridgman anvil apparatus. Bismuth phase transformations were used as fix point calibrant. Three different parameters were studied, density, moisture and diametral support dependence on the load–thickness and pressure build-up. The experiments are done such as they can be used as validation and calibration of constitutive models for finite element simulations of the HPHT-process. The results show that increasing the density of the powder compact increases the load needed to reach maximum pressure. In addition, the residual stresses in the compact seem to delay the phase transition on the down-ramp. Moisture content within 0.5%–1.2% does not significantly influence the compaction properties of the discs. Diametral support increases the phase transition load. 相似文献
