RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We compared adverse reactions and image quality for hysterosalpingography (HSG) performed with ionic (diatrizoate meglumine combined with iodipamide meglumine [DM + IM]) and nonionic (iohexol) contrast media. METHODS: We performed a study of 95 patients who had HSG and were randomly selected to receive DM + IM or iohexol. Patients reported episodes of abdominal pain and other adverse reactions immediately and 24 hr after the procedure and categorized severity of symptoms on a subjective scale. Two radiologists evaluated image quality for diagnosis. RESULTS: Prevalence of abdominal pain and other reactions both immediately and 24 hr after HSG was lower in patients who received iohexol than in patients who received DM + IM. Moderate or severe abdominal pain was significantly lower in the iohexol group than in the DM + IM group (p < .05). Visualization of the uterine cavity and ampullary rugae was judged excellent with both contrast media (87% with iohexol and 92% with DM + IM). CONCLUSION: Iohexol and DM + IM are excellent contrast media for use during HSG; iohexol 300 may cause fewer episodes of more severe and prolonged abdominal pain.  相似文献

Our aims were to separate and characterize secreted canine ocular mucins, and to provide definitive evidence of membrane-bound mucins at the canine ocular surface. Mucus was collected by suction from the ocular surface of normal dogs and dispersed in guanidine hydrochloride and a cocktail of protease inhibitors. Caesium chloride density gradient centrifugation separated secreted mucins from membranes, which were collected from the top of the gradients. Membranes were extracted with octyl glucoside and screened using lectins and anti-mucin antibodies. Gradient fractions containing secreted mucins were constituted into pools on the basis of differential lectin and antibody staining. High molecular weight material from each pool was purified by gel filtration. This material, and the membrane extract, were reduced and alkylated. Vacuum blotting of separated materials after agarose gel electrophoresis was used to compare subunit structure. Density gradient profiles indicated three principal secreted glycoprotein peaks: one staining strongly with anti-mucin antibodies. Gel filtration demonstrated that each contained high molecular weight material. Vacuum blots demonstrated the presence of two secreted glycoproteins with differently sized subunits. On the basis of buoyant density, one of these may be lipid complexed. Membrane extracted material stained with anti-mucin antibodies, and vacuum blotting of this material provided evidence for two membrane-bound components. In conclusion, we have shown that normal canine ocular mucus contains two secreted mucins, each exhibiting different subunit structure; one of these mucins may undergo lipid complexation. Normal canine ocular mucus also contains two membrane-bound mucins: one of which is unique among membrane mucins in showing subunit structure.  相似文献

The interaction of human peripheral blood leukocytes with alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), its glycoforms as well as neoglyco-conjugates representing carbohydrate chains of AGP or its fragments was studied by flow cytometry. It was shown that the main target cells for AGP as well as for conjugates of its carbohydrate chains with polyacrylamide (PAA) are monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes but not lymphocytes. The interaction of AGP with monocytes and granulocytes are mediated by its carbohydrate chains: the binding of AGP with cells was inhibited by AGP, AGP oligosaccharides as well as conjugates of oligosaccharides and its fragments with PAA. The data obtained show the existence of monocyte (and granulocyte) receptors which interact with complex type sialooligosaccharides of AGP.  相似文献

This article examines the determinants of first-time use durations of the injectable contraceptive Depo Medroxy Progesterone Acetate (DMPA) for rural Bangladeshi women. The method's side effects were defined by 200 first-time users in Matlab district during lengthy, open-ended interviews. Women with many children used the method longer than did women of low parity. Those who experienced side effects had shorter use durations than those who did not, and those who cited heavy bleeding as their main problem discontinued use soonest. Women whose husbands approved of family planning had significantly longer use durations than those whose husbands disapproved. Respondents who adopted DMPA because of perceived positive aspects of the drug used it longer than those who chose it for other reasons. Results of the study underscore the importance of viewing side effects in a specific social and cultural context. Expanded side-effects counseling for women and their husbands is needed.  相似文献

Experimental results are presented to show that the adhesion force is the single most important limiting factor in high-resolution atomic force microscopy of DNA in air, prepared by the cytochrome-C-assisted spreading method. It is also shown that humidity plays a minor role in the control of probe force. Using a pure carbon film as the substrate to clean the AFM tip prior to imaging, it is demonstrated that 4-6 nm resolution on DNA can be routinely obtained by the atomic force microscope with commercial Si3N4 pyramid cantilevers. We also show that in organic solvents a resolution of up to 3 nm can be obtained under optimal conditions.  相似文献

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating disease. Paraclinical examinations may contribute to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a very high sensitivity concerning multiple sclerosis, and has made it possible to visualize multiple sclerosis plaques in vivo, to follow each plaque over the course of time and in this way to obtain information about the pathogenesis. MRI has shown that the size of plaques may vary considerably, and that plaques are dynamic structures with the ability to change in size over few weeks. By using MRI and the contrast agent Gadolinium-DTPA, it is possible to distinguish a newly developed plaque from an older one. Therefore, MRI has become an important examination in therapeutic trials. Just now, MRI with Gadolinium-DTPA is being used to evaluate the efficacy of plasmapheresis and immunoglobulin treatment in a joint study between Rigshospitalet and Hvidovre Hospital.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate angiogenesis in squamous cell carcinoma in situ (CIS) and microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix and to investigate the relations among angiogenesis, stromal inflammation, and depth of invasion. METHODS: Three groups of women were studied: 22 controls who had undergone hysterectomy for benign conditions; 18 with squamous cell CIS of the cervix who underwent cone biopsy, hysterectomy, or both; and 14 with microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma who underwent conization of the cervix and subsequent surgical management according to depth of invasion. All specimens were stained immunohistochemically for factor VIII-related antigen. Areas below the basement membrane with the highest angiogenic density were selected. The degree of stromal inflammatory reaction was assessed. Statistical analyses included Kruskal-Wallis, analyses of variance and covariance, Scheffe and Bonferroni-Dunn post hoc procedures, and Pearson correlation analysis. P < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Microvessel counts per high-power field (x 400) of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix differed significantly from those of controls and squamous cell CIS (median 34.5 per high-power field, range 9-76 versus median 17, range 7-47, and median 19, range 8-39, respectively; P < .005). Microvessel counts per high-power field in squamous cell CIS did not differ significantly from those of controls (P = .91). Among patients with microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, no significant correlation was found between microvessel counts per high-power field and the depth of invasion (r = 0.19, P = .51). Stromal inflammatory reaction (graded 0-3) differed significantly among controls, squamous cell CIS, and microinvasive carcinoma (mean 0.40, 0.83, and 1.64, respectively; P < .005). CONCLUSIONS: Microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is angiogenic, but depth of invasion is not associated with increased angiogenicity. Squamous cell CIS is not angiogenic.  相似文献
