Phospho-accepting proteins in bovine sera have been detected by the use of immobilized protein kinase from rat muscle and (gamma32P)-ATP in an in vitro system. A partial biochemical characterization points to the generation of typical phosphoproteins. Differences in the phosphorylation pattern between fetal serum and calf serum as demonstrated by electrophoresis in the presence of dodecylsulfate are described.     

High levels of factor VIII--related antigen in cadaveric blood

The effect of chronic consumption of alcohol on the circadian variations of the plasma corticosterone investigated in DBA/2J male mice. After 15 weeks of alcohol consumption (3.8%w/v for the first week and 7.5% for subsequent weeks) the alcohol groups exhibited a flattened circadian corticosterone curve, the level being intermediate between the peak and trough values of the water control groups. The diurnal patterns of food and liquid consumption were still present at the 10th week of alcohol treatment in the alcohol groups, although the absolute amount of food and liquid consumed at each of the 6-h intervals was somewhat different between the alcohol and water groups. The blood alcohol showed a peak at early morning with the mean of 100 mg/100 ml, but the levels of alcohol during the remaining periods were remarkably stable, the means ranging from 30 to 46 mg/100 ml. Chronic consumption of alcohol, even relatively low concentrations, appears to affect the neural sites in the CNS controlling the circadian rhythm of ACTH release.     

Relationships of cessation of smoking with job stress, personality, and social support.

Studied the relationships between job stress, social support, personality, and cigarette smoking quit rate by multivariate analyses of responses of 200 male administrators, engineers, and scientists (mean age = 40 yrs) to a battery of tests, including the Jenkins Activity Scale. Results indicate that quitters had the lowest levels of quantitative work load, responsibility, and social support, and that they scored low on Type A personality characteristics (i.e., they were not hard driving, persistent, competitive, overloaded with work, or involved in the work). While quitters tended to be administrators rather than engineers or scientists, these occupational differences in quit rates were accounted for by occupational differences in Type A personality, work load, social support, and responsibility. A Social Support * Job Stress interaction showed that decreases in stress were associated with decreases in the quit rate only for persons with low social support. Although the rise in blood copper is associated with onset of the acute haemolytic crisis of chronic copper poisoning in sheep, the sudden fall in erythrocyte glutathione is apparently not due to a direct action of the copper. Moreover the reduced glutathione of the red cells is converted to some form that is not capable of regeneration by the pentose-phosphate mechanism. Only negligible inhibition of the pentose-phosphate enzymes occurs. As the haemolysis proceeds, there is a rapid recovery of erythrocyte glutathione levels, and a marked increase in pentose-phosphate enzyme activity, consistent with influx of young red cells. It seems that the release of copper into blood from liver at the haemolytic crisis is associated with an increase of the oxidative state of the blood, possibly by simultaneous release of other components from the liver.     

A study of protein clearances in patients with nephrotic syndrome

In 37 patients of nephrotic syndrome, serum protein levels, protein fractions and urinary levels of proteins and their fractions were determined. The findings of serum levels of proteins and their fractions were compared with an equal number of age and sex matched controls. Twenty three patients showed selective and 14 non-selective proteinuria. Most of the patients with selective proteinuria showed good response to steroids therapy while those with non-selective proteinuria did not respond.     

Iron poisoning: report of a fatal case in an adult

A fatal case of iron poisoning in a suicide attempt is reported, and the toxicity and pathophysiology of iron are discussed. The four phases of the clinical features of iron poisoning are presented, and the general treatment of iron toxicity is discussed.
