A method that increases the error resistance of the HDTV system and offers graceful picture degradation in the presence of bit errors, is presented. Due to the nature of the presently proposed compression schemes for HDTV systems, an error in a data bit does not only affect the block the bit belongs to, but unfortunately the effects of this error may perpetuate to the following blocks. This is because a bit error may cause loss of synchronization between the data bits and the picture blocks they represent. Our method restricts the effects of a bit error to a picture block whose size is significantly smaller than those used by the HDTV systems. We achieve synchronization by transmitting a header-word for each such synchronization block. Each header-word contains the number of data bits representing the compressed block. This header-word is protected by two levels of FEC code. To decrease the number of extra bits needed by the header-words, two different synchronization block sizes are used, a relatively small block size for the reference frames and a larger size for the inter-frames. The resulting method improves the quality of the picture in the presence of errors and defers the SNR at which the HDTV picture suddenly deteriorates by 2.5 to 3 dB. The serum amyloid A (SAA) superfamily comprises a number of genes and proteins characterized from a range of mammalian species. The majority of members described to date are dramatically induced during the acute-phase response, suggesting an important short-term beneficial role in the response to tissue injury and inflammation. However, important disease associations have also been proposed for certain SAAs during chronic inflammation. The nomenclature of many of the superfamily members has been the result of comparisons with previously reported sequences implying disease association and/or functional relatedness between such members. The evolutionary relationships of the SAA superfamily members have been investigated by comparisons at both the amino acid and the nucleotide level. The results indicate that all members of the superfamily within a species have been undergoing concerted evolution. This has important implications in ascribing functions and disease associations to individual SAA superfamily members and indicates that designations should not be based on the extent of amino acid identity alone but should be made only following direct experimental observation of the proteins themselves. 相似文献

Cryptococcal meningitis has a high mortality rate of central nervous infection. The patients usually die of the disease itself, or complications from increased intracranial pressure. Early diagnosis and treatment, including surgical drainage, will improve the results. In this series, twenty-one patients with high intracranial pressure (ICP > 300 mmH2 O) are presented. Fourteen received implantation of Ommaya reservoir to aspirate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for relief of symptoms of ICP. Meanwhile 4 of these 14 patients also received intraventricular injection of amphotericin B because of poor response to systemic drugs. Another seven patient received systemic drug therapy only. Survival during therapy occurred in 11 of 14 patients in the surgical group, compared with only 1 of 7 patients treated by drug therapy alone (P = 0.019). In the 14 patients who received implantation of an Ommaya reservoir, there was one complication of CSF leakage when the reservoir ruptured because of repeated aspiration. For patients with cryptococcal meningitis with high ICP, early implantation of an Ommaya reservoir will improve the survival rate. 相似文献

Measuring the noise generated by a pulsed RF amplifier is not a simple task [1]. One method of making this measurement converts the RF pulse to video with a phase detector and uses a spectrum analyzer to measure the noise between the lines of the pulse spectrum. The measurement includes the combined effects of timing jitter, power-supply modulation, and amplifier noise. An alternate method, described in this note, requires less test equipment by using an RF spectrum analyzer to measure the noise at a point outside the pulse spectrum. This measurement responds only to amplifier noise and is valid if the noise density is the same both inside and outside the pulse spectrum. Since this situation tends to be true of broad-band amplifiers such as TWT's and CFA's, the second method is preferable because of its relative simplicity. This note describes the procedure for measuring pulsed amplifier noise using an RF spectrum analyzer. We conducted two experiments to examine the relations among characteristics of how Type A individuals strive for achievement, including goal achievement, self-evaluation, and psychological distress. We evaluated these relations as subjects performed two sequential general information tests. Experiment 1 indicated that achievement striving associated with the Type A behavior pattern is characterized by a tendency to set personal goals in excess of performance and is associated with a low probability of achieving goals. The results of Experiment 2 indicated that the achievement strategy Type A individuals adopted was associated with low self-evaluation of their actual performance. Furthermore, a pre- and postexperiment self-report questionnaire of psychological state suggested that failure to achieve personal goals was related to increased psychological distress. The results of our study suggest that unrealistically high performance standards and failure to achieve personal goals may be a mechanism that triggers the negative psychological states and performance dissatisfaction associated with the Type A behavior pattern. Our study also supports theoretical conceptualizations that excessive achievement striving can act as a potential motivational mechanism. A new method is described for producing biomedically relevant polymers with precisely defined micron scale surface texture in the x, y, and z planes. Patterned Si templates were fabricated using photolithography to create a relief pattern in photoresist with lateral dimensions as small as 1 micron. Electroless Ni was selectively deposited in the trenches of the patterned substrate. The Ni served as a resilient mask for transferring the patterns onto the Si substrate to depths of up to 8.5 microns by anisotropic reactive ion etching with a fluorine-based plasma. The 3-dimensional (3-D) textured silicon substrates were used as robust, reusable molds for pattern transfer onto poly (dimethyl siloxane), low density poly (ethylene), poly (L-lactide), and poly (glycolide) by either casting or injection molding. The fidelity of the pattern transfer from the silicon substrates to the polymers was 90 to 95% in all three planes for all polymers for more than 60 transfers from a single wafer, as determined by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Further, the 3-D textured polymers were selectively modified to coat proteins either in the trenches or on the mesas by capillary modification or selective coating techniques. Twenty-five patients with advanced solid tumours were entered in a phase I/II study of six, weekly cycles of cisplatin. Nineteen patients were chemonaive and six were previously treated. The starting dose was 50 mg m-2 week-1. This dose could be escalated without major toxicity to 70 mg m-2 week-1. At a dose of 80 mg m-2 myelosuppression grade 3 occurred as well as grade 1 nephro- and neurotoxicity. The maximum tolerated dose was 85 mg m-2 with dose limiting thrombocytopenia. Hypertonic saline was effective in preventing nephrotoxicity. Ondansetron was a very effective antiemetic in the first weeks of treatment but its efficacy waned later on. Responses were observed in head and neck cancer, melanoma and mesothelioma. At the dose level of 80 mg m-2 the optimal dose intensity was reached.
