Some marine diatoms negatively affect the reproduction of dominant zooplankton grazers such as copepods, thus compromising the transfer of energy through the marine food chains. In this paper, the metabolic mechanism that leads to diatom-induced toxicity is investigated in three bloom-forming microalgae. We show that copepod dysfunctions can be induced by highly reactive oxygen species (hROS) and a blended mixture of diatom products, including fatty acid hydroperoxides (FAHs); these compounds display teratogenic and proapoptotic properties. The process is triggered by the early onset of lipoxygenase activities that elicit the synthesis of species-specific products, the basic structures of which were established (1-20); these compounds boost oxidative stress by massive lipid peroxidation. Our study might explain past laboratory and field results showing how diatoms damage zooplankton grazers even in the absence of polyunsaturated aldehydes, a class of molecules that has been formerly implicated in mediating the toxic activity of diatoms on copepods.  相似文献

Although the importance of natural organic matter (NOM) in the environment and in drinking water treatment is well-known, its structure is still ill-defined. The fragmentation patterns of NOM treated by irradiation (various wavelengths--185-400 nm), hydroxyl radicals, chlorine, ozone, and breakdown by a white rot fungus were studied to investigate the structure of chromophoric NOM molecules. Size exclusion chromatography was used to monitor the size distributions of NOM in two natural water waters and two NOM isolates. Three distinct fragmentation patterns were observed: ozone attack appeared to be nonsize specific, UV (> or = 254 nm) irradiation preferentially removed higher molecular weight chromophores, while processes involving hydroxyl radical showed intermediate size specificity. For the samples studied, the UV (> or = 254 nm) irradiation-induced fragmentation of NOM followed the patterns suggested by a simple trimer depolymerization model, supporting the viewpoint that NOM has repeating structural units joined by photolabile chemical bonds. The largest molecules reacted most rapidly, progressively fragmenting into slower reacting smaller molecules, which initially accumulated before breaking down to become nonchromophoric. This dependency of rate on molecular size appears to follow from the law of photochemistry which states the rate of reaction is proportional to the rate of light absorption: larger chromophores had higher molar absorptivities, absorbed more photons, and hence reacted faster than smaller chromophores.  相似文献

During the last decade, the concept of composite performance index, brought from economic and business statistics, has become a popular practice in the field of road safety, namely for the identification and classification of worst performing areas or time slots also known as hotspots. The overall quality of a composite index depends upon the complexity of phenomena of interest as well as the relevance of the methodological approach used to aggregate the various indicators into a single composite index. However, current aggregation methods used to estimate the composite road safety performance index suffer from various deficiencies at both the theoretical and operational level; these include the correlation and compensability between indicators, the weighting of the indicators as well as their high “degree of freedom” which enables one to readily manipulate them to produce desired outcomes (0060, 0065 and 0070). The objective of this study is to contribute to the ongoing research effort on the estimation of road safety composite index for hotspots’ identification and ranking. The aggregation method for constructing the composite road safety performance index introduced in this paper, strives to minimize the aforementioned deficiencies of the current approaches. Furthermore, this new method can be viewed as an intelligent decision support system for road safety performance evaluation, in order to prioritize interventions for road safety improvement.  相似文献

(2′S)‐2′‐Deoxy‐2′‐C‐methyluridine and (2′R)‐2′‐deoxy‐2′‐C‐methyluridine were incorporated in the 3′‐overhang region of the sense and antisense strands and in positions 2 and 5 of the seed region of siRNA duplexes directed against Renilla luciferase, whereas (2′S)‐2′‐deoxy‐2′‐C‐methylcytidine was incorporated in the 6‐position of the seed region of the same constructions. A dual luciferase reporter assay in transfected HeLa cells was used as a model system to measure the IC50 values of 24 different modified duplexes. The best results were obtained by the substitution of one thymidine unit in the antisense 3′‐overhang region by (2′S)‐ or (2′R)‐2′‐deoxy‐2′‐C‐methyluridine, reducing IC50 to half of the value observed for the natural control. The selectivity of the modified siRNA was measured, it being found that modifications in positions 5 and 6 of the seed region had a positive effect on the ON/OFF activity.  相似文献

We consider the \(k\) -strong conflict-free ( \(k\) -SCF) coloring of a set of points on a line with respect to a family of intervals: Each point on the line must be assigned a color so that the coloring is conflict-free in the following sense: in every interval \(I\) of the family there are at least \(k\) colors each appearing exactly once in \(I\) . We first present a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for the general problem; the algorithm has approximation ratio 2 when \(k=1\) and \(5-\frac{2}{k}\) when \(k\ge 2\) . In the special case of a family that contains all possible intervals on the given set of points, we show that a 2-approximation algorithm exists, for any \(k \ge 1\) . We also provide, in case \(k=O({{\mathrm{polylog}}}(n))\) , a quasipolynomial time algorithm to decide the existence of a \(k\) -SCF coloring that uses at most \(q\) colors.  相似文献

The ability of cows (Bos taurus) to perceive depth has never been experimentally investigated. If cows can perceive depth, the milking pit in commercial milking facilities may be fear provoking for dairy cows, as past research has shown that most land-dwelling species possess an instinctive fear of heights. In the current study, 12 dairy heifers (1-year-old cows) were exposed to a milking pit (depth-exposed group) and 13 heifers (control group) were exposed to a standard change in the environment while they moved through a milking facility over a 5-day treatment period.
