Abstract: The use of ionizing radiation for the control of foodborne pathogens and extending the shelf life of fresh iceberg lettuce and fresh spinach has recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The efficacy of electron beam irradiation for controlling foodborne pathogens has been reported. For this experiment, the effectiveness of electron beam irradiation on the microbiological and sensory characteristics of fresh spinach was studied. Total aerobic plate counts were reduced by 2.6 and 3.2 log CFU/g at 0.7 and 1.4 kGy, respectively. Lactic acid bacteria were reduced at both doses of e-beam but grew slowly over the 35 d of the experiment. Yeasts and molds were not reduced in samples exposed to 0.7 kGy whereas 1.4 kGy significantly reduced microbial counts. Gas compositions (O2 and CO2) were significantly different than controls. Oxygen levels inside the spinach sample bags decreased over time; however, O2 levels did not drop below 1% that can induce anaerobic fermentation. CO2 levels for all treatments increased through day 4; yet 7 d after irradiation, CO2 level differences were not significant in both control and irradiated samples. Irradiation dose did not affect the basic tastes, aromatics, or mouth feels of fresh spinach, however; hardness attributes decreased as irradiated dose increased and slimy attributes of fresh spinach were higher in control samples compared to irradiated samples. 相似文献

Two experiments were designed to explore how age differences in conflict detection may contribute to poorer motor performance. In each experiment, 12 young adults (YAs) and 12 older adults (OAs) performed a finger sequencing task in which the frequency of specific critical transitions was varied. These critical transitions were contrasted with violation transitions to assess the ability to detect a conflict in response requirements. In addition to accuracy and reaction time, the authors used kinematic data to parse movements into planning and motor execution phases. OAs were differentially slower to respond to violations than YAs, in line with other research on executive control, prepotent response suppression, and aging. Kinematic analyses revealed that YAs executed movements more rapidly on violation than critical transitions, whereas OAs executed movements at the same speed regardless of response predictability and increased planning time. The authors argue that OAs are unable to reprogram prepotent movement plans to overcome slowed movement planning in cognitively challenging situations. Oxide ceramics for use as electrical insulators in future fusion devices, will be exposed to ionization and displacement damage (neutrons, gammas, ion bombardment). Enhanced oxygen loss due to ion bombardment increases surface electrical conductivity, and at the same time the surface emits light due to ion beam induced luminescence (IBIL). Results for 3 types of α-alumina and sapphire measuring electrical surface conductivity and IBIL as a function of dose at different temperatures between 20 and 200 °C, show a clear correlation between luminescence and surface electrical degradation. This indicates the potential to remotely monitor insulating material degradation not only in ITER and beyond, but also in the more immediate in-reactor experiments required for materials testing. Partial reduction of degradation by heating in air suggests the possibility for in situ recovery of the insulating properties. 相似文献

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composites incorporating polysulfones as compatibilizers were fabricated by melt-blending, after pre-processing based on ball milling and mechanical treatments in an organic solvent. Their structure, morphology and thermal properties have been investigated. Microscopic observations showed a uniform distribution of the CNTs and good miscibility between the compatibilizer and matrix phases. The incorporation of wrapped SWCNTs leads to a remarkable increase in the degradation temperatures of the matrix in comparison with non-compatibilized samples, attributed to the high thermal stability of the polysulfones and the compatibilizing effect. The addition of very small CNT loadings raises the crystallization temperature and the degree of crystallinity of PEEK. At higher concentrations, the inactive nucleating activity of the nanofillers, the confinement of the polymer chains within the CNT network and the presence of an amorphous compatibilizer moderately hinder PEEK crystallization. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments indicate the existence of reorganization phenomena of the matrix crystals during the heating of the composites. Improved thermal properties are found for composites incorporating arc-purified SWCNTs, attributed to the higher degree of debundling and lower metal content of these CNTs. A matrix formulation to determine the coupled response of rigid foundations where soil properties are modeled by springs and dashpots is presented. Location and orientation of springs and dashpots can be arbitrary, thus a general solution is determined. The response is given in terms of translational and rotational displacements considering coupled effects. Physics of the problem presented here has been extensively studied and a broad range of useful formulae to determine springs and dashpots properties for soil-structure interaction is available. These published formulae for springs and dashpots properties are an input to the approach presented. Thus, the novelty of this approach is a matrix manipulation that leads to a simple expression allowing coupling all degrees of freedom even when springs and dashpots are not orthogonally oriented. The levels of sanitation and water services coverage as well as health attainment are low among indigenous peoples. This exclusion from basic service has not been sufficiently studied. The present review has analyzed 185 articles dealing with indigenous peoples and the water, sanitation and hygiene complex. The literature is dramatically skewed towards water resources, and overwhelmingly focused on conflicts, at the expense of basic sanitation and hygiene. More initiatives towards the acknowledgement of indigenous peoples’ world-views and institutions in all aspects of the water management cycle are needed. To this end, the development of effective intercultural dialogue mechanisms is crucial. 相似文献
