The effect of ceria on the partial oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde over VOx/CeO2/SiO2 catalysts was investigated. A two-dimensional layer of ceria on silica was prepared by grafting cerium (IV) t-butoxide (Ce(OC4H9)4) onto high surface area, mesoporous silica, SBA-15, and then calcining the resulting product in air at 773 K. Ce surface concentrations obtained this way ranged from 0.2 to 0.9 Ce nm?2. Next, V was introduced by grafting VO(OiPr)3 onto CeO2/SiO2 in order to achieve a surface concentration of 0.6 V nm?2. XANES spectra indicate that all of the V is in the 5+ oxidation state and Raman spectra show that vanadia exist as pseudo-tetrahedra bonded to either silica or ceria. Data from Raman spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption of adsorbed methanol indicate that with increasing Ce surface density, most of the V becomes associated with the deposited ceria. The turnover frequency for methanol oxidation is nearly two orders of magnitude higher for VOx/CeO2/SiO2 than for VOx/SiO2, whereas the apparent activation energy and apparent first-order pre-exponential factor are 17 kcal/mol and 1.4 × 106 mol CH2O (mol V atm s)?1, respectively, for VOx/CeO2/SiO2 and 23 kcal/mol and 2.3 × 107 mol CH2O (mol V atm s)?1, respectively, for VOx/SiO2.  相似文献

Two of the National Parks of the only Biosphere Reserve in the Caribbean Islands, the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo reserve, occur mostly within the Pedernales province (Dominican Republic). In these National Parks, Jaragua and Bahoruco, almost every tropical forest ecosystem is represented, as are the land uses most common to the Dominican Republic. Despite soil being a key natural resource that needs to be considered in any sustainable development programme, the literature contains very little information on the soils of this region. In this study, we analysed 41 topsoil samples representing the main forest types and land uses of the province. The factors examined were fertility (OM, N, P, K) and heavy metal contents (Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn). Mean OM, N and total and available metal levels were almost invariably higher in the natural forest soils compared to those given over to human activities, especially cultivated soils. This difference suggests the uptake of metals by the crops and, to a lesser extent, by animals feeding on crop remains and grassland plants. This hypothesis is supported by high total and available metal contents, especially of Zn, Cu, Pb and, in smaller measure, of Cr recorded in the solid waste landfill of the city of Pedernales. It appears that the cutting down and burning practices of a nomad type of cultivation, as well as the pressures of intensive agriculture and livestock rearing have resulted in heavy metals bound to the soil's OM. We propose this is an important point to consider for the management of these lands.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of urban population exposures to ambient air particles was investigated as part of the Genotox'ER study conducted in four metropolitan areas (Grenoble, Paris, Rouen and Strasbourg) in France. In each city, 60 to 90 non-smoking adult and children volunteers were selected. Subjects lived in three different urban sectors: one highly exposed to traffic emissions, one influenced by local industrial sources, and a background urban environment. The Harvard Chempass multi-pollutant personal sampler was used to sample PM10 and PM2.5 particles during 48 h during two different seasons ('hot' and 'cold'). The elemental composition of the filters was analysed by Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). Sixteen elements were found to be over the method detection limits: Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb. The relative concentrations of elements of crustal origin (Si, Al, Ca) were higher in the coarse fraction of PM10 filters, while elements associated with combustion processes (traffic emissions or industrial combustion) presented higher relative concentrations in the PM2.5 fraction (S, Ni, V, Pb). Spatial heterogeneity of elemental exposures by urban sector is substantial for some metals of health concern, with 20% to 90% greater exposure values, on average, in the traffic proximity or industrial sectors, compared to the background sector, for Fe, Zn, Cu, V and Cr. This spatial heterogeneity should not be overlooked in epidemiological or risk assessment studies.  相似文献

Recently we demonstrated that Rhodococcus sp. strain DN22 degraded hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) (1) aerobically via initial denitration followed by ring cleavage. Using UL 14C-[RDX] and ring labeled 15N-[RDX] approximately 30% of the energetic chemical mineralized (one C atom) and 64% converted to a dead end product that was tentatively identified as 4-nitro-2,4-diaza-butanal (OHCHNCH2NHNO2). To have further insight into the role of initial denitration on RDX decomposition, we photolyzed the energetic chemical at 350 nm and pH 5.5 and monitored the reaction using a combination of analytical techniques. GC/ MS-PCI showed a product with a [M+H] at 176 Da matching a molecular formula of C3H5N5O4 that was tentatively identified as the initially denitrated RDX product pentahydro-3,5-dinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohex-1-ene (II). LC/MS (ES-) showed that the removal of RDX was accompanied by the formation of two other key products, each showing the same [M-H] at 192 Da matching a molecular formula of C3H7N5O5. The two products were tentatively identified as the carbinol (III) of the enamine (II) and its ring cleavage product O2NNHCH2NNO2CH2NHCHO (IV). Interestingly, the removal of III and IV was accompanied by the formation and accumulation of OHCHNCH2NHNO2 that we detected with strain DN22. At the end of the experiment, which lasted 16 h, we detected the following products HCHO, HCOOH, NH2CHO, N2O, NO2-, and NO3-. Most were also detected during RDX incubation with strain DN22. Finally, we were unable to detect any of RDX nitroso products during both photolysis and incubation with the aerobic bacteria, emphasizing that initial denitration in both cases was responsible for ring cleavage and subsequent decomposition in water.  相似文献

Fecal indicator microbes, such as enterococci, are often used to assess potential health risks caused by pathogens at recreational beaches. Microbe levels often vary based on collection time and sampling location. The primary goal of this study was to assess how spatial and temporal variations in sample collection, which are driven by environmental parameters, impact enterococci measurements and beach management decisions. A secondary goal was to assess whether enterococci levels can be predictive of the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a skin pathogen. Over a ten-day period, hydrometeorologic data, hydrodynamic data, bather densities, enterococci levels, and S. aureus levels including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) were measured in both water and sand. Samples were collected hourly for both water and sediment at knee-depth, and every 6 h for water at waist-depth, supratidal sand, intertidal sand, and waterline sand. Results showed that solar radiation, tides, and rainfall events were major environmental factors that impacted enterococci levels. S. aureus levels were associated with bathing load, but did not correlate with enterococci levels or any other measured parameters. The results imply that frequencies of advisories depend heavily upon sample collection policies due to spatial and temporal variation of enterococci levels in response to environmental parameters. Thus, sampling at different times of the day and at different depths can significantly impact beach management decisions. Additionally, the lack of correlation between S. aureus and enterococci suggests that use of fecal indicators may not accurately assess risk for some pathogens.  相似文献

X-ray spectroscopy measurements have been combined with macroscopic uptake data and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results to show that Pb(II) uptake by Burkholderia cepacia is due to simultaneous sorption and biomineralization processes. X-ray microprobe mapping of B. cepacia biofilms formed on alpha-Al2O3 surfaces shows that Pb(II) is distributed heterogeneously throughout the biofilms because of the formation of Pb "hot spots". EXAFS data and TEM observations show that the enhanced Pb accumulation is due to the formation of nanoscale crystals of pyromorphite (Pb5(PO4)3(OH)) adjacent to the outer-membrane of a fraction of the total population of B. cepacia cells. In contrast, B. cepacia cell suspensions or biofilms that were heat-killed or pretreated with X-rays do not form pyromorphite, which suggests that metabolic activity is required. Precipitation of pyromorphite occurs over several orders of magnitude in [H-] and [Pb] and accounts for approximately 90% of the total Pb uptake below pH 4.5 but only 45-60% at near-neutral pH because of the formation of additional Pb(II) adsorption complexes. Structural fits of Pb L(III) EXAFS data collected for heat-treated cells at near-neutral pH suggest that Pb(II) forms inner-sphere adsorption complexes with carboxyl functional groups in the biofilms.  相似文献

The use of non-toxic and low-cost vitamins like α-tocopherol (α-TCP, vitamin E) to improve the photophysical properties and stability of perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), through post-synthetic ligand surface passivation, is demonstrated for the first time. Especially interesting is its effect on CsPbI3 the most unstable inorganic PNC. Adding α-TCP produces that the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of freshly prepared and aged PNCs achieves values of ≈98% and 100%, respectively. After storing 2 months under ambient air and 60% relative humidity, PLQY is maintained at 85% and 67%, respectively. α-TCP restores the PL features of aged CsPbI3 PNCs, and mediates the radiative recombination channels by reducing surface defects. In addition, the combination of α-TCP and PNCs facilitates the chemical formulation to prepare PNCs-acrylic polymer composites processable by additive manufacturing. This enables the development of complex shaped parts with improved luminescent features and long-term stability for 4 months, which is not possible for non-modified PNCs. A PLQY ≈92% is reached in the 3D printed polymer/PNC composite, the highest value obtained for a red-emitting composite solid until now as far as it is known. The passivation shell provided by α-TCP makes that PNCs inks do not suffer any degradation process avoiding the contact with the environment and preserve their properties after reacting with polar monomers during composite polymerization.  相似文献
