In this study, the authors addressed the longitudinal nature of intraindividual variability over 3 years. A sample of 304 community-dwelling older adults, initially between the ages of 64 and 92 years, completed 4 waves of annual testing on a battery of accuracy- and latency-based tests covering a wide range of cognitive complexity. Increases in response-time inconsistency on moderately and highly complex tasks were associated with increasing age, but there were significant individual differences in change across the entire sample. The time-varying covariation between cognition and inconsistency was significant across the 1-year intervals and remained stable across both time and age. On occasions when intraindividual variability was high, participants' cognitive performance was correspondingly low. The strength of the coupling relationship was greater for more fluid cognitive domains such as memory, reasoning, and processing speed than for more crystallized domains such as verbal ability. Variability based on moderately and highly complex tasks provided the strongest prediction. An investigation of the fatigue properties of cast W319-T7, an Al-Si-Cu alloy used in automotive engine components, was conducted using ultrasonic testing equipment with operating frequencies of 20 kHz. The stress-life (S-N) behavior at room temperature was determined for three solidification conditions of this alloy, where stresses for fatigue lives ranging from 105 to 109 cycles were determined. The results are compared to fatigue data acquired using servohydraulic equipment operating at 40 Hz. No influence of loading frequency has been observed. A discrete endurance limit is indicated for each of the three solidification conditions of W319-T7. The scientific and practical implications of this result are discussed. A material model presented previously is modified by introducing a crack growth threshold condition in order to predict the observed endurance limits. The model is shown to effectively predict the influence of solidification time on the fatigue properties of W319-T7.  相似文献

Solidification time and heat treatment are known to have a large effect on the microstructure of cast aluminum alloys. This study was conducted to quantify how the fatigue properties of a 319-type aluminum alloy are affected by solidification time and heat treatment. Both porosity-containing (non-hot isostatically pressed (HIP)) and porosity-free (HIP) samples in the T6 (“peak aged”) or T7 (“overaged”) heattreated conditions were tested. As the solidification time increased, the average initiating pore diameter increased and stress-controlled fatigue life decreased. Heat treatment was observed to have a large effect on fatigue properties of the HIP samples. However, in the non-HIP fatigue samples, heat treatment did not significantly change the fatigue life or fatigue strength of the cast 319-type alloy. The absence of an influence of heat treatment on fatigue response is attributed to the predominance of the microporosity in fatigue crack initiation in cast aluminum.  相似文献

The current study examined the relations between two aspects of emotional competence--emotion knowledge and emotion expression, and children's attentional competence during one school year. Participants were 263 first- and second-grade students at two rural elementary schools. A multiple regression analysis showed that emotion knowledge predicted attentional competence while controlling for age, gender, verbal ability, and initial levels of attentional competence. Multiple regression analyses examining predictors of peer nominations of emotion expression showed that attentional competence predicted peer nominations of happiness, sadness, and anger expression, and emotion knowledge predicted peer nominations of anger expression. Past research has frequently failed to find age differences in prospective memory. This article tested the possibility that age differences would be more likely to emerge on a prospective memory task that was high in self-initiated retrieval. In the 1st experiment, participants were asked to perform an action every 10 min (a time-based task presumed to be high in self-initiated retrieval); in the 2nd experiment, participants were asked to perform an action whenever a particular word was presented (an event-based task presumed to be relatively low in self-initiated retrieval). Age differences were found with the time-based task but not with the event-based task. This pattern of age differences was again found in a 3rd experiment in which a new experimental procedure was used and the nature of the prospective memory task was directly varied. Generally, the results suggest that self-initiated retrieval processes are an important component of age-related differences across both retrospective and prospective memory tasks. The effects of chronic administration of antidepressant drugs (21-22 days s.c. via osmotic mini-pumps) on the behavioural responses of male Sprague-Dawley rats to (-)-quinpirole hydrochloride (0.05 mg kg-1 s.c., 5 min) and (+/-)-SKF 38393 hydrochloride (10 mg kg-1 s.c., 5 min) were investigated. Desipramine hydrochloride (10 mg kg-1 per day), phenelzine sulphate (10 mg kg-1 per day) and clorgyline hydrochloride (1 mg kg-1 per day) attenuated the suppression of locomotor activity induced by quinpirole, a dopamine D2-like receptor agonist, while clomipramine hydrochloride (10 mg kg-1 per day) was without effect. Yawning elicited by quinpirole was absent in phenelzine- and clorgyline-treated rats, but unaffected in rats treated chronically with desipramine and clomipramine. SKF 38393, a dopamine D1-like receptor agonist, significantly increased locomotor activity and time spent grooming in control animals. There were no significant effects of antidepressants on the behavioural responses to SKF 38393.  相似文献

Wood chips were evaluated for their ability to attenuate heavy metals in roadway runoff. Column experiments with controlled synthetic runoff composition and flow rate were used to assess effects of flow rate (intercepted sheetflow from a 3-m wide roadway section), runoff salt concentration, wood exposure to alternating wetting and drying cycles, wood aging, competition among dissolved heavy metals, and removal of particle-associated heavy metals. Overall, wood chips damped the “pulse” of copper in the synthetic runoff such that the effluent was characterized by lower concentrations (3–25% of input) over longer periods of time, but with little retention of the total copper mass. The most effective treatment was wood chips aged up to 9 months. Increased aging and chip water content reduced effluent concentrations, relative to no treatment. Flow rate had no effect on effluent concentrations. The presence of salt (>2?mS/cm) or dissolved lead (500?μg/L) in the runoff caused greater copper effluent concentrations than the no treatment case. Removal of suspended particles (and associated contaminants) was greater than 85% with an estimated capacity of 0.16?g/gwood. Field evaluation with concentrated flow to a gutter containing a wood chip treatment showed little effect on total or dissolved copper and zinc runoff concentrations and indicated that wood chips may be a source of contaminants in subsequent storm events. Applications of wood chips to treat roadway runoff would not provide a significant decrease in total maximum daily load contributions (e.g., kg/d); however, there may be some scenarios for which wood chip treatments to decrease peak storm water concentrations of dissolved heavy metals in sheetflow runoff is desirable.  相似文献

Debate continues regarding the nosological status of binge eating disorder (BED) as a diagnosis as opposed to simply reflecting a useful marker for psychopathology. Contention also exists regarding the specific criteria for the BED diagnosis, including whether, like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, it should be characterized by overvaluation of shape/weight. The authors compared features of eating disorders, psychological distress, and weight among overweight BED participants who overvalue their shape/weight (n = 92), BED participants with subclinical levels of overvaluation (n = 73), and participants in an overweight comparison group without BED (n = 45). BED participants categorized with clinical overvaluation reported greater eating-related psychopathology and depression levels than those with subclinical overvaluation. Both BED groups reported greater overall eating pathology and depression levels than the overweight comparison group. Group differences existed despite similar levels of overweight across the 3 groups, as well as when controlling for group differences in depression levels. These findings provide further support for the research diagnostic construct and make a case for the importance of shape/weight overvaluation as a diagnostic specifier. Currently there is no plan for the management of civilian plutonium that does not create a stockpile of separated plutonium. As a result, a number of nations with nuclear technology hold a large stockpile (about 240 tonnes) of separated plutonium. This paper suggests a timely, cost-effective solution for managing this material: storage MOX. A storage MOX plan would use existing MOX fuel fabrication facilities to make a simple MOX waste form suitable for long-term storage. Alternative waste forms to MOX are also possible, such as zirconia and pyrochlore, which provide more reliable durability and radiation damage control over thousands to hundreds of thousands of years.  相似文献

It has previously been reported that the malting quality of barley is related to the amount of β-glucan dissolved at low pH under defined conditions. An infra red reflectance instrument, the ‘InfraAlyzer’, can be used to estimate this ‘acid-soluble’ β-glucan content of barley. This is a rapid test (approximately one min/sample) and is therefore suitable when screening for low soluble β-glucan in the early generations of malting quality breeding programmes. The relationship between predicted and measured values for soluble β-glucan differs from comparisons made for other quality components in forages, in that it is curvilinear rather than linear. A logarithmic transformation of the soluble β-glucan values, however, allows the current ‘InfraAlyzer’, which produces linear regressions only, to predict values for soluble β-glucan that correlate well (r = 0.87) with the measured results.  相似文献
