During the development of maize seed large amounts of protein are synthesized and deposited in the endosperm. The largest proportion of this protein consists of the storage protein fraction called zein, which may account for as much as 60% of the total protein. A large number of environmental and genetic factors are known to affect the synthesis of zein proteins. For example, it is well documented that the application of nitrogen fertilizer greatly enhances synthesis of the zein fraction. On the other hand, endosperm mutations such as opaque‐2 and floury‐2 reduce the synthesis of these proteins by 50% or more. The biochemical mechanisms by which these factors alter storage protein synthesis have not been identified primarily because little is known regarding the molecular basis for zein synthesis. Our studies have revealed the role of two translational mechanisms involved in enhanced storage protein synthesis in maize endosperm. One of these involves preferential initiation of zein mRNAs, and the other involves cotranslational processing of the zein polypeptides as they enter the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum.  相似文献

Body-image dissatisfaction is not uncommon and can adversely affect individuals' psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Various oft-cited surveys and a meta-analysis implicate a worsening of body image over the past several decades, especially among women and possibly among men. The present cross-sectional study examined changes in multiple facets of body image among 3,127 college students from 1983 through 2001; the same standardized assessment was used in 22 studies conducted within the same university. Results confirmed non-Black women's increasing body-image dissatisfaction until the early or mid-1990s, after which significant improvements occurred in terms of overall body-image evaluation and overweight preoccupation among both non-Black and Black women, despite heavier body weights. A reduction over time in women's investment in their appearance was also evident. Men's body image was relatively stable during the 19-year period. InAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) are promising candidates for low power and high frequency (THz) device applications due to their small bandgap, high electron mobility, and high saturation drift velocity. However, doping limits such as the trade-off between desired low intentional n-type concentrations and unintentional doping, and the realization of high p-type concentrations, must still be considered in device design and synthesis. In order to observe the impact of intentional and unintentional n-type doping on diode electrical properties, InAs-based homojunction diodes have been grown on InAs substrates by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (SSMBE) and were subsequently fabricated and characterized.  相似文献

The interaction of 4H-SiC(0001)Si and 6H-SiC(0001)Si surfaces with atomic hydrogen and atomic nitrogen produced by remote radio-frequency plasmas is investigated. The kinetics of the surface modifications is monitored in real time using ellipsometry, while chemical modifications of the surface are characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Film morphological properties are assessed with atomic force microscopy (AFM). A two-stage substrate preparation procedure is described that effectively removes oxygen from the SiC surface at low (200°C) temperature. In the first step, the SiC surface is etched with an HCl/HF acid solution as an alternative to the conventional HF(1%)-H2O solution. The HCl/HF etch provides effective hydrogen passivation of the SiC surface. In the second step, the SiC surface is exposed to atomic hydrogen that selectively interacts with residual oxygen. In addition, the temperature dependence of the nitridation of SiC surfaces has also been investigated. It is found that interaction of SiC surfaces with atomic hydrogen at 200°C provides clean, smooth, and terraced surfaces suitable for epitaxial growth. In contrast, SiC surface exposure at high temperature (750°C) to atomic hydrogen and nitrogen results in very rough and disordered Si-rich surfaces. Finally, we find that the 4H-SiC surface is more reactive than the 6H-SiC surface to both species studied, independent of temperature. Surface geometry and electronic factors responsible for the observed reactivities are discussed.  相似文献

Aqueous ethylenediamine-ethanol-anthraquinone (EDA-EtOH-AQ) pulping of Southern Yellow Pine was studied for lignin removal and pulp yield. Temperature, time and ethylenediamine concentration in the solvent solution were studied and equations for lignin content and lignin-free yield were developed. Lignin content is decreased by an increase of temperature, time or EDA concentration. Lignin-free yield of pulp decreased with an increase in temperature or time, but increased with increasing EDA concentration. Overall, the solvent is selective, that is, large quantities of lignin are removed while the retention of cellulose remains high.  相似文献
