A reuse business model

This paper summarizes the decision framework for forming reuse business models and offers the Expert Services Model as a preferred first application of that framework. The Expert Services Model is only one possible approach, but one that we found is a good starting point. The framework for setting up a reuse plan consists of four major steps: define reuse, populate a library of reusable assets, share reusable assets, and maintain reusable assets.     

Fluorescein angiography of the fundus after pars plana vitrectomy

In diabetic patients with massive vitreous hemorrhage, fluorescein angiography after pars plana vitrectomy demonstrated varying degrees of vascular involvement depending on the stage of the basic disease process. Arteriolar occlusions, capillary bed drop-out, microaneurysms, and neovascularization were common findings. We concluded that diabetic retinopathy continued its course behind the cloudy vitreous, sometimes leading to retinal ischemia and subsequent spontaneous involution, macular disease, or retinal detachment. In addition, some of these patients were also subject to nondiabetic diseases, such as senile macular degeneration, that could not be detected preoperatively, but that reduced visual acuity postoperatively. In the nondiabetic patients with vitreous hemorrhage, visual acuity after vitrectomy usually depended on the degree of coincident macular disease.     

Life events and subsequent illness

The objective was to examine for relationships between stress, as measured by life events, and hospitalization or death during the following 6 to 12 months, using a case-control design. As part of the Community Mental Epidemiology Program, life events data for the preceding year were gathered on a random sample of the population at two sites, and health data for the interval between interviews were collected at follow-up. A case is defined as anyone becoming ill and being hospitalized or dying during the interval between interviews. Each case was individually matched by several variables to a control who had neither been sick nor hospitalized. There were no significant demographic differences between cases and control in either site or between sites. When life events were examined by various scoring methods, there were no differences between cases and controls. This finding is important since most longitudinal studies that have shown a positive relationship between life events and subsequent illness have had methodologic limitations or have been based on healthy, young, male populations who generally did not become seriously ill during the study period. The results of this study plus the lack of generalizability of previous findings and their somewhat conflicting results raise serious questions about the etiologic relationship of life events to subsequent illness.     

Single longitudinal mode operation of a transversely excited CO2laser

High peak-power output has been obtained from a transversely excited CO2laser in a single longitudinal and lowest order transverse mode. An intracavity etalon was used for mode selection in a laser system designed to operate effectively at reduced pressures.     

Effect of oxygen and solute on PGE and PGF production by rat kidney slices

Increasing oxygen from 5% to 95% resulted in an increases production of both PGE's and PGF's. The release of prostaglandins from slices of rat kidney cortex and outer and inner medulla was measured. Prostaglandin production was observed predominantly in the inner medulla, was close to the lower limit of detection in the outer medulla, and was undetectable in the cortex. Increasing oxygen concentration resulted in a threefold increase in inner medullary prostaglandin production. Synthesis at 95% O2 was less at 2100 mOsm than at 300 mOsm, while synthesis at 5% O2 was not affected by high solute concentration. The implications of these results with respect to kidney function are discussed.     

Persistent primitive sciatic artery

Angiography revealed persistence of the primitive sciatic artery in two cases. In one, the artery supplied a large arteriovenous malformation, and the profunda femoris artery was absent. In the other, there were associated findings of neurofibromatosis, decreased left lower limb lymphatic vessels, a left subinguinal lymphocele, and absent external iliac and femoral arteries.     

Ribonuclease inhibitors from mouse ascites cells

Ribonuclease inhibitors were found to be present attached to mouse ascites ribosomes and in the post-ribosomal supernatant. Both inhibitors inhibited pancreatic RNAses A and B and two endonucleases prepared from ascites cells but did not inhibit RNAses T1 or N1. Both inhibitors had the same sedimentation coefficient and this taken with the results above suggest that they are identical. The inhibitor was shown to interact directly with the RNAse itself.     

Use of substrate-coated barium sulfate tablets in the evaluation of digestive enzyme deficiency

Glucose solution containing wheat straw hemicellulose-B and ovoglycopeptide (W-O-G) has no effect on Ehrlich ascites tumors but completely regresses Ehrlich solid tumors. The carcinostatic effect of this mixture is lost or decreases markedly whenever one of the three substances is lacking. For this glucose solution to possess a carcinostatic effect it is necessary that this hemicellulose-B of W-O-G is the hydrolysate of the extract with 20% NaOH from the residue obtained after extraction of wheat straw with 10% NaOH.
