The preparation and characterization of the properties of mullite ceramic foams suitable for diesel exhaust filtration systems are described. Two foams of different cell sizes, 32 and 61 ppi (pores per inch), were prepared from slurries by the replication process with polyurethane sponges as the templates. The microstructure and the dependence of the porosity and the mechanical properties on the preparation and resulting foam cell size and normalized density are discussed. In addition the micro- and macromechanical properties have been characterized using instrumented indentation techniques; with sharp (Berkovich) and small spherical-tipped indenters the hardness and modulus of the dense strut materials have been measured. The macroproperties have been measured with a large sapphire indenter, ∼5 mm radius using a load partial-unloading technique. The latter enables the modulus and the contact pressure versus penetration to be measured. These values are compared with traditional bulk measurements for crushing strength and elastic modulus. The results are discussed in terms of available theoretical treatments of the indentation of brittle porous materials.  相似文献

The phase behavior of the blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(Resorcinol Phthalate-block-Carbonate) (RPC) and the blends of PET and poly(Bisphenol-A Carbonate) (PC) was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Blends of high molecular weight PET and RPC copolymer with 20 mol% resorcinol phthalate (RPC20) showed two glass transition temperatures in DMA and DSC but the cold crystallization rate of PET phase was substantially lowered as compared to neat PET, indicating partial miscibility at all compositions. The RPC20 with Mw = 31,500 g/mol formed miscible blends with PET when PET has weight-average molecular weight <9500 g/mol. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between PET and RPC20 was calculated to be 0.029 ± 0.003 by using the Flory-Huggins equation at critical composition and molecular weight. PC with Mw = 30,000 g/mol formed miscible blends with PET only when PET had molecular weight <2800 g/mol, indicating PC/PET blends were much less miscible than RPC20/PET blends. Group contribution methods agreed well with the experimental results obtained both in the present study and a previous study [1], predicting that the addition of a resorcinol phthalate block to a PC backbone should increase the miscibility of PC and PET.  相似文献

A study of 0.71Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.29PbTiO3 shows that, when it is doped with 2.5% Sm on the A-site, in addition to an almost threefold increase in piezoelectric charge coefficient and dielectric permittivity, there is a 2 order of magnitude reduction in conductivity, attributed to a decrease in oxygen vacancy concentration. An analysis of the nonlinearity of permittivity with respect to field amplitude shows that both the reversible and irreversible contributions increase significantly with Sm-doping, with simple models showing that these changes are consistent with a reduction in the concentration of dipolar defects that can inhibit both polarization rotation and domain wall translation. Contrary to the argument that doping increases heterogeneity, there is little change in the diffuseness of the peak in permittivity as a function temperature, whilst there is a 15% increase in spontaneous polarization with Sm addition. Through comparison of the Rayleigh law parameters with those published for other piezoelectric materials, it is concluded that a significant contribution to the observed increase in piezoelectric performance due to Sm-doping of PMN-PT is similar in origin to that seen in soft, donor-doped PZT and other conventional piezoelectric ceramics.  相似文献

Crystallization, mechanical properties, and workability are all important for the commercialization and optimization of silicate glass compositions. However, the inter-relations of these properties as a function of glass composition have received little investigation. Soda-lime-silica glasses with Na2O-MgO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 compositions relevant to commercial glass manufacture were experimentally studied and multiple liquidus temperature and viscosity models were used to complement the experimental results. Liquidus temperatures of the fabricated glasses were measured by the temperature gradient technique, and Rietveld refinements were applied to X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD) data for devitrified glasses, enabling quantitative determination of the crystalline and amorphous fractions and the nature of the crystals. Structural properties were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Acoustic echography, micro-Vicker's indentation, and single-edge-notched bend testing methods were used to measure Young's moduli, hardness, and fracture toughness, respectively. It is shown that it is possible to design lower-melting soda-lime-silica glass compositions without compromising their mechanical and crystallization properties. Unlike Young's modulus, brittleness is highly responsive to the composition in soda-lime-silica glasses, and notably low brittleness values can be obtained in glasses with compositions in the wollastonite primary phase field: an effect that is more pronounced in the silica primary phase field. The measured bulk crystal fractions of the glasses subjected to devitrification at the lowest possible industrial conditioning temperatures indicate that soda-lime-silica glass melts can be conditioned close to their liquidus temperatures within the compositional ranges of the primary phase fields of cristobalite, wollastonite, or their combinations.  相似文献

Melanin granules cluster within supra-nuclear caps in basal keratinocytes (KCs) of the human epidermis, where they protect KC genomic DNA against ultraviolet radiation (UVR) damage. While much is known about melanogenesis in melanocytes (MCs) and a moderate amount about melanin transfer from MC to KC, we know little about the fate of melanin once inside KCs. We recently reported that melanin fate in progenitor KCs is regulated by rare asymmetric organelle movement during mitosis. Here, we explore the role of actin, microtubules, and centrosome-associated machinery in distributing melanin within KCs. Short-term cultures of human skin explants were treated with cytochalasin-B and nocodazole to target actin filaments and microtubules, respectively. Treatment effects on melanin distribution were assessed by the Warthin–Starry stain, on centrosome-associated proteins by immunofluorescence microscopy, and on co-localisation with melanin granules by brightfield microscopy. Cytochalasin-B treatment disassembled supra-nuclear melanin caps, while nocodazole treatment moved melanin from the apical to basal KC domain. Centrosome and centriolar satellite-associated proteins showed a high degree of co-localisation with melanin. Thus, once melanin granules are transferred to KCs, their preferred apical distribution appears to be facilitated by coordinated movement of centrosomes and centriolar satellites. This mechanism may control melanin’s strategic position within UVR-exposed KCs.  相似文献

Drug adhesion to the walls of an aerosol canister can be prevented/reduced by coating the canister with a hydrophobic polymer (e.g., a fluoropolymer). In this study, three batches of fluoropolymer-coated canisters were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The EIS technique showed that only one of the batches presented as a monolithic, non-porous film. The other two batches were either partially porous or highly porous. Scanning electron micrographs showed evidence of cracks, within the films, but could not alone establish the porous nature of these defects. For the non-porous and partly porous films it was possible to use the EIS data to determine the approximate film thickness. Estimates of 2-4 µm were obtained for the mean film thickness. These values compared favorably with micrometer estimates obtained following acid dissolution of the aluminum canister. It remains to be seen whether the properties of the films (i.e., the porosity and film thickness, determined by EIS) translate to differences in drug adhesion. Nevertheless, the EIS technique was shown to be a powerful, non-destructive method that lends itself to the rapid analysis of batch-to-batch variation in film-coated canisters.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between the similarity and accuracy of team mental models and compared the extent to which each predicted team performance. The relationship between team ability composition and team mental models was also investigated. Eighty-three dyadic teams worked on a complex skill task in a 2-week training protocol. Results indicated that although similarity and accuracy of team mental models were significantly related, accuracy was a stronger predictor of team performance. In addition, team ability was more strongly related to the accuracy than to the similarity of team mental models and accuracy partially mediated the relationship between team ability and team performance, but similarity did not. The construction industry is placing increased emphasis on developing leadership skills for project managers. This paper describes a research project that was executed to analyze the causal influences on the development of project managers, whom the authors believe also must be leaders. The research compared two groups of project managers within a large construction company. One group was top performing construction managers as selected by corporate executives, while the second group was a randomly selected control group. The research examined influences on career development including job experience, project management experience, formal project management training, formal leadership training, and job assignments. The research also solicited opinions from both groups as to what they perceived as factors impacting leadership career development. Statistical differences between the groups were found in the areas of project management experience and number of positions held prior to the first project management assignment. Both groups believed there was more of a need within their company for leadership training than for project management training.  相似文献

The contributions of the various ulnar-innervated muscles of the hand to the hypothenar compound muscle action potential (CMAP) were estimated by directly stimulating individual muscles and by analyzing CMAP shape changes resulting from manipulations that changed individual muscle lengths. The results show that the first peak of the negative phase of the hypothenar CMAP comes from the hypothenar muscles, but that the second peak is due to a large volume-conducted potential from the interosseous muscles. The interosseous contribution affects both the amplitude and the area of the CMAP, and makes these parameters sensitive to changes in the configuration of the fingers and the temperature gradient in the hand. To reduce the interosseous contribution, a "balanced reference" consisting of two reference electrodes, one over each tendon, is proposed.  相似文献
