A capacitor charging power supply utilizing a Ward converter

A prototype capacitor-charging power supply (CCPS) that utilizes a Ward converter is presented. This converter is a member of the family of resonant converters and is capable of zero-current switching. It is applicable to capacitor charging because of its inherent short-circuit protection and its insensitivity to the value of the load capacitance. The converter is controlled using a constant on-time constant frequency scheme that allows the utilization of zero-current switching techniques. The prototype CCPS is capable of charging various values of load capacitors up to 1000 V DC. Waveforms that show single- and repetitive-charge operation of the CCPS are presented     

Relationship of the meniscofemoral ligaments of the knee to lateral meniscus tears: magnetic resonance imaging evaluation

This study sought to determine if the presence or absence of meniscofemoral ligaments exerts an influence on the prevalence of tears of the lateral meniscus. We reviewed the sagittal and coronal magnetic resonance images of 173 knees for lateral meniscus tears and the presence of the meniscofemoral ligaments. One or both meniscofemoral ligaments were present in 142 of 173 knees (82%). Fifty-four knees had lateral meniscus tears, 27 of which involved the posterior horn. Thirty-three percent of knees with meniscofemoral ligaments had a lateral meniscus tear, and 23% of knees without meniscofemoral ligaments had a lateral meniscus tear (no significant difference). We found no association between the presence of the meniscofemoral ligaments and tears of the lateral meniscus. Our study questions the importance of preserving or reconstructing these ligaments in instances of meniscal transplantation.     

Lipopolysaccharide induces sickness behaviour in rats by a vagal mediated mechanism

A 52-year-old man was hospitalized for a right adrenal tumor which had been incidentally found by abdominal CT scan for examination of colon cancer. Laboratory and endocrine findings were within the normal limits except for increased urinary concentrations of noradrenaline and dopamine. Adrenal angiography revealed that the feeding artery of the tumor was the inferior suprarenal artery. Adrenal venous blood sampling studies detected no abnormalities in the concentrations of catecholamine, cortisol or aldosterone. Right adrenalectomy was performed and the tumor was histologically diagnosed as ganglioneuroma. Ganglioneuroma is a benign tumor originating from the sympathetic nerve ganglion. The adrenal origin of the tumor is relatively rare and 60 cases of adrenal ganglioneuroma including our case have been reported in Japan.     

Conversion of cortisol to cortisone by the human uterus and its reversal in pregnancy

Inter-conversion of cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) was investigated by incubating minced tissue with tritiated cortisol or cortisone and then separating the products by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. In non-pregnant subjects conversion of F to E predominated (43.4+/-3.4% vs 0.1+/-0.4% for E to F). In early pregnancy F leads to E decreased and E leads to F rose while at term E leads to F (46.3+/-9.1%) exceeded F leads to E (15.1+/-6.8%). These results were in accord with those obtained by assaying the endogenous concentrations. In non-pregnant subjects the F/E ratio (1.1+/-0.6) was lower than that found in serum (6.3+/-2.2) while at term the uterine F/E (9.0+/-1.8) was similar to that of serum (8.8+/-2.0). These changes resulted in an 8-fold increase in uterine F compared with a 3-fold increase in serum F, while uterine E fell to 1/2 and serum E doubled. Thus, during pregnancy there is a dramatic reversal of the reaction in the uterus in favour of the active hormone. It seems possible that the increase in cortisol thus brought about may play an anti-immune role in uterine wall, the single tissue apart from blood in direct contact with fetal tissue.     

Oligomeric interaction of the PapB transcriptional regulator with the upstream activating region of pili adhesin gene promoters in Escherichia coli

1. Prostanoid receptor-mediated sensitization, or excitation, of sensory nerve fibres contributes to the generation of hyperalgesia. To characterize the prostanoid receptors present on sensory neurones, biochemical assays were performed on primary cultures of adult rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and the F-11 (embryonic rat DRG x neuroblastoma hybrid) cell line. 2. In DRG cultures, the IP receptor agonists, cicaprost and carbaprostacyclin (cPGI2) stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) also increased cyclic AMP levels, but to a lesser extent, while carbocyclic thromboxane A2 (cTxA2), PGD2 and PGF2alpha had negligible effects. The rank order of agonist potency was cicaprost>PGE2=BMY45778=cPGI2=PGI2. In the F-11 cells, the rank order of agonist potency for the stimulation of cyclic AMP accumulation was: cicaprost>iloprost=cPGI2=PGI2=BMY45778>PGE2=cTXA2++ +. In DRG cultures, cicaprost induced significantly more accumulation of inositol phosphates than PGE2. 3. To examine the effects of prostanoids on C-fibre activity, extracellular recordings of d.c. potentials from the rat isolated vagus nerve were made with the 'grease-gap' technique. PGI2 (0.1 nM-10 microM) produced the largest depolarizations of the nerve. The rank order of agonist potency was: PGI2=cPGI2=PGE1>cTXA2>PGE2=PGD2=TXB2>PGF2alpha. 4. Prior depolarization of nerves with either forskolin (10 microM) or phorbol dibutyrate (1 microM) alone significantly reduced the response to PGI2 (10 microM), while simultaneous application of both forskolin and phorbol dibutyrate attenuated PGI2 responses almost completely. 5. Putative EP1 and/or TP receptor-selective antagonists had no effect on the responses to PGI2, cPGI2 or PGE2 in the three preparations studied. 6. Collectively, these data are consistent with a positive coupling of IP receptors to both adenylyl cyclase and phospholipase C in sensory neurones. These findings suggest that IP receptors play a major role in the sensitization of rat sensory neurones.     

Mortality and production characteristics of laying chickens fed high- and low-erucic acid rapeseed oils

Laying pullets were fed a diet supplemented with three percent of either high-erucic acid rapeseed (HEAR) oil or low-erucic acid rapeseed (LEAR) oil for 39 weeks. Egg production for the period was 78.8 and 80.1% by the birds fed the respective oils. Average egg weights were 56.8 and 58.7 g. respectively. Gains in body weight, liver weight and adrenal gland weight were similar with the two types of oil fed. Feed consumption was similar for the two groups of birds. The efficiency of utilization of the diet containing HEAR oil was accordingly lower than that of the diet containing LEAR oil. In the birds fed HEAR and LEAR oil respectively mortality attributed to metabolic disorders of the reproductive system, liver, and kidney was 3.3% and 1.2%. Mortality from other causes in the birds fed the two oils was 3.2 and 3.8% of the original populations.
