Ethical and professional considerations in divorce and child custody cases.

The provision of psychological (e.g., psychotherapy, coparenting, mediation, collaborative divorce, child custody evaluation) services for families of divorce are growing specialties for many clinical and forensic psychologists. However, practice in domestic relations psychology, such as divorce and custody assessment and testimony, is a high-risk venture for incurring ethics complaints and law suits. The lead article and the three commentaries that follow enumerate the various roles practitioners might play, clarify how each role requires specific skill sets that may be outside one’s particular competence and necessitate additional training, describe how countertransferential issues arise, urge meticulous record keeping, discuss some of the subtleties of confidentiality and the releasing of information, describe how transparency in clarifying expectations leads to a lowering of contentiousness, and provide tips for divorce and forensic practice. The special challenges associated with psychologists being tempted to move beyond their role on a case and those of particularly high-risk situations (e.g., complaints of child abuse or domestic violence) are also discussed. Suggestions are offered to help psychologists better serve the public while taking steps to better inoculate themselves from complaints. Phase transformations,dislocations and hardening behavior in uniaxially compressed silicon nanospheres

Molecular dynamics has been used to simulate the uniaxial compression of single crystal silicon nanospheres using the Tersoff potential. The resulting yield behavior is shown to vary with changes in temperature, sphere size, and crystallographic orientation with respect to the loading direction. Only compression along the [1 0 0] crystallographic direction resulted in the formation of the β-Sn phase. A temperature dependent hardening response is observed in all orientations independent of the β-Sn phase transformation. Dislocation activity is detected at elevated temperatures in the largest sphere indicating a critical temperature and size for nucleation. Consequences of these dislocations to simulating strength properties at the nanoscale are discussed.     

The role of a single N-linked glycosylation site for a functional epitope of herpes simplex virus type 1 envelope glycoprotein gC

High altitude (HA) living produces physiological changes for adaptation to chronic hypobaric-hypoxemic conditions. Although much is known about these physiologic adaptations, no clear separation has been made regarding what is "native" or "genetic" adaptation and what is "acquired." In this review, we describe the genetic vs. acquired adaptation and only include studies performed in a population native to HA and not in an acclimatized population or trekkers. The changes encountered in animals and humans living at HA in terms of hematology, muscular, respiratory, cerebral, cardiovascular, hormonal, fluid and electrolytes and reproduction, strongly suggest that genetics play a very important role in HA adaptation. Unfortunately, the characteristic physiology of HA natives has not been systematically defined to established specific measurable parameters of adaptation in comparison to the acquired ambient adaptation of the non-native population. Once the parameters are established, we can compare non-native populations exposed to HA that must emulate the HA physiology for a definite adaptation to be present. With measurable parameters, especially in the management of fluids and electrolytes, we can define how long it will take for a sea level native to adapt to an HA altitude. Until these studies are performed, speculation will continue and no rational medical intervention can be offered to HA newcomers who may experience HA difficulties.     

Stability analysis of vertical boreholes using the Mogi–Coulomb failure criterion

A main aspect of wellbore stability analysis is the selection of an appropriate rock failure criterion. The most commonly used criterion for brittle failure of rocks is the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. This criterion involves only the maximum and minimum principal stresses, σ₁ and σ₃, and therefore assumes that the intermediate stress σ₂ has no influence on rock strength. As the Mohr–Coulomb criterion ignores the strengthening effect of the intermediate stress, it is expected to be too conservative in estimating the critical mud weight required to maintain wellbore stability. Recently, Al-Ajmi and Zimmerman [Relationship between the parameters of the Mogi and Coulomb failure criterion. Int J Rock Mech Min Sci 2005;42(3):431–39.] developed the Mogi–Coulomb failure criterion, and showed that it is reasonably accurate in modelling polyaxial failure data from a variety of rocks. We then develop a model for the stability of vertical boreholes, using linear elasticity theory to calculate the stresses, and the fully-polyaxial Mogi–Coulomb criterion to predict failure. Our model leads to easily computed expressions for the critical mud weight required to maintain wellbore stability.     

Professionals in mutual help groups: Impact on social climate and members' behavior.

This study assessed the impact of professional involvement in mutual help groups for the mentally ill. Social climate data and behavioral data on members in groups led either by a mental health professional (n?=?36) or an indigenous group member (n?=?70) were compared. The results of the study indicated a more formal, psychologically directed approach in the professionally led groups. Although professional involvement in mutual help groups does not necessarily produce different member outcomes, it does seem to affect both the perceptions and the behavior of members. Thioredoxin fusion/HIV-1 protease coexpression system for production of soluble human IL6 in E. coli cytoplasm

In this paper, thioredoxin (TRX) fusion expression system has been modified to produce soluble human IL6 (hIL6) without TRX moiety in E. coli cytoplasm. A novel TRX gene fusion vector was developed that contained at the 3'-end of TRX gene a short DNA sequences encoding a linker peptide '-GSGSGVSQNYPIVQHHHHHH-', serving not only as a specific HIV-1 protease site but also providing six contiguous histidine (His) residues to foreign proteins. The cDNA for hIL6 was cloned into this vector resulting in plasmid pTRX@HISIL6. The cDNA for the HIV-1 protease has been cloned into another compatible plasmid pHMM2, resulting in plasmid pHMM2-PR. Both plasmids were transformed into E. coli strain GI724, and when induced for expression of both proteins, the correct processing of TRX@HISIL6 was obtained, producing hIL6 with His6-tag at the N terminus named HISIL6. A fraction of HISIL6 was found in soluble form and could be purified to homogeneity by Ni-NTA Superflow and ion-exchange chromatography. The biological activity of purified HISIL6 was measured by MTT method in an IL-6-dependent cell line 7TD1 to be 2.1 x 10(8) unit/mg.     

Executive fit rehearsal.

Outlines a psychological procedure aimed at improving the working relationship between a newly hired executive and the executive's reporting official. The "Executive Fit Rehearsal" (EFR) attempts to systematically engage the executive and reporting official in a dialogue designed to anticipate and overcome problems resulting from individual differences in personality, expectations, work styles, and communication patterns. The procedure supports consensus and mutual understanding. To assess the effectiveness of the procedure, evaluation forms were mailed to participants of 15 consecutive Executive Fit sessions. Ss' reactions to the EFR indicate that the process facilitated adjustment to the work setting and improved communications. Investigation of the N-substituent conformation governing potency and mu receptor subtype-selectivity in (+)-(3R, 4R)-dimethyl-4-(3-hydroxyphenyl)piperidine opioid antagonists

A study of the binding site requirements associated with the N-substituent of (+)-(3R,4R)-dimethyl-4-(3-hydroxyphenyl)piperidine (4) derivatives was undertaken using a set of rigid vs flexible N-substituents. The study showed that compounds 7-9 bearing the trans-cinnamyl N-substituent most closely reproduced the potency at the opioid receptor of the flexible N-propylphenyl or N-propylcyclohexyl analogues previously reported. Neither the N-substituted cis-cinnamyl nor the cis-phenylcyclopropylmethyl compounds 10 and 11, respectively, showed high affinity for the opioid receptor. However, the N-trans-phenylcyclopropylmethyl compound 12 closely approximated the affinity of compounds 7-9. Additionally, we found that free rotation of the phenyl ring is necessary for high affinity binding and mu receptor subtype selectivity as the planar N-substituted thianaphthylmethyl and benzofuranylmethyl compounds 13 and 14 had significantly lower binding affinities. Altogether, these findings suggest that the high binding affinity, selectivity, and antagonist potency of N-propylphenyl or N-propylcyclohexyl analogues of (+)-(3R, 4R)-dimethyl-4-(3-hydroxyphenyl)piperidine (4) are achieved via a conformation wherein the connecting chain of the N-substituents is extended away from piperidine nitrogen with the appended ring system rotated out-of-plane relative to the connecting chain atoms. This conformation is quite similar to that observed in the solid state for 5, as determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. Additionally, it was found that, unlike naltrexone, N-substituents bearing secondary carbons attached directly to the piperidine nitrogen of 4 suffer dramatic losses of potency vs analogues not substituted in this manner. Using a functional assay which measured stimulation or inhibition of [35S]GTP-gamma-S binding, we show that the trans-cinnamyl analogues of (+)-(3R, 4R)-dimethyl-4-(3-hydroxyphenyl)piperidine (4) retain opioid pure antagonist activity and possess picomolar antagonist potency at the mu receptor.     

Prognostic significance of colony-stimulating factor receptor expression in ipsilateral breast cancer recurrence

The macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor (CSF-1R), the product of the c-fms proto-oncogene, regulates normal proliferation and differentiation of macrophages and trophoblasts. Recent research found abnormal expression of CSF-1R in human carcinomas of the breast, endometrium, and ovary. Furthermore, activation of CSF-1R by its ligand has been shown to regulate invasiveness and anchorage-independent growth in breast carcinoma cells. To study the significance of CSF-1R expression in breast cancer, we designed a case-controlled immunohistochemical study. We chose 80 patients from a database of 1200 early stage I or II breast cancer patients treated with conservative surgery and radiation therapy. Expression of CSF-1R in the tumors of 40 patients who experienced an ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) as a primary site of relapse were compared with 40 patients who had not experienced an IBTR. The index and control patients were matched by age, clinical stage, nodal status, and follow-up. Paraffin-embedded sections were immunostained with antibodies directed toward CSF-1R. For the CSF-1R antibody, a total of 28 index cases (70%) demonstrated strong staining, whereas only 16 control cases (40%) demonstrated high immunoreactivity (P = 0.007). The CSF-1R antibody showed a positive correlation for local relapse, but no correlation was found between CSF-1R expression and distant metastasis. In summary, our findings provide evidence for the poor prognostic role of CSF-1R in IBTR.
