Cadmium concentrations in Ucluelet Inlet sediments are usually high compared with most marine environments, ranging up to 8 micrograms g-1. The distribution of the element is closely correlated with Mo, organic carbon and total nitrogen in depth profiles at three stations. Paradoxically, organic carbon concentrations are high in inlet sediments, reaching up to 9 wt.%, although the sedimentation rate determined from 210Pb measurements is low at all three sites (less than 0.03 to 0.28 cm year-1). C:N ratio data indicate a mixed marine-terrigenous provenance for the organic material and a relatively recent increase in the terrigenous proportion which probably represents wood debris associated with logging and log booming activity in the area. The complete absence of Mn enrichments in surface sediments, coupled with qualitative observations that H2S is present at very shallow depths, strongly suggest that the deposits are anoxic very near the sediment-water interface. The Cd and Mo enrichments are not due to anthropogenic inputs but are instead ascribed to diffusion of the dissolved metals from overlying seawater into the slowly-accumulating, organic-rich, anoxic sediments and their fixation in the solid phase as CdS and as a coprecipitate with FeS, respectively.  相似文献

A total of 19 steroids, of which 13 steroidal oligoglycosides (nine new and four known) and six polyhydroxylated steroids (four new and two known), has been isolated from the Antarctic starfish Acodontaster conspicuus. The mixture is dominated by glycosides composed of steroidal aglycons having the hydroxyl groups typically disposed on one side of the tetracyclic nucleus, i.e., 3 beta,4 beta,6 alpha,8,15 beta-, with some having a sulfate at C-6, and differing in the side chains and/or in the disaccharide moieties that are usually attached at C-26, with some at C-28 and C-29. Those compounds are accompanied by minute amounts of glycosides with a delta 8(14)-double bond in the steroid, which is a structural feature not previously found among polyhydroxysteroids derived from starfish. Small amounts of six related unglycosidated polyhydroxysteroids and three higher-molecular-weight asterosaponins complete the composition of the mixture. The structures of the new compounds were determined by interpretation of their spectral data and by comparison with spectral data of known compounds. Eighteen of these compounds were evaluated for their ability to inhibit growth in Antarctic marine bacteria isolated from either the water column or the surfaces of benthic marine invertebrates. Of these compounds, 50% were active against at least one Antarctic marine bacterium. This suggests that these compounds may play an important role in deterring microbial fouling.  相似文献

The effect of alcohol on identification accuracy is potentially an important topic. This study examined the effects of alcohol consumption on identification accuracy from showups, the identification procedure most likely to be used by police with intoxicated witnesses. The blood alcohol level of people exposed to a target was measured. In the target-present showup condition, blood alcohol level was not significantly related to correct identification rate. In the target-absent showup condition, the higher the blood alcohol level, the more people were likely to make a false identification. Obtaining spirometric testing and providing those results to individuals who smoke has been advocated as a motivational tool to improve smoking cessation. However, its effectiveness is not known. We conducted a systematic review to determine if this approach improves rates of smoking cessation. Data sources included MEDLINE (1966 to October 2005), the Cochrane Library, and experts in the field. Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) enrolled at least 25 smokers per arm, evaluated spirometry with associated counseling or in combination with other treatments, followed subjects at least 6 months, and provided smoking abstinence rates. Results from nonrandomized studies also were summarized. The primary outcome was patient-reported long-term (at least 6 months) sustained abstinence with biological validation. Additional outcomes included self-reported abstinence and point-prevalence abstinence. Seven RCTs (N = 6,052 subjects) met eligibility criteria. Follow-up duration ranged from 9 to 36 months. In six trials, the intervention group received concomitant treatments previously demonstrated to increase cessation independently. The range of abstinence was 3%-14% for control subjects and 7%-39% among intervention groups, statistically significantly in favor of intervention in four studies. The only RCT that assessed the independent contribution of spirometry in combination with counseling demonstrated a nonsignificant 1% improvement in patient-reported point-prevalence abstinence at 12 months in the group that received spirometry plus counseling versus counseling alone (6.5% versus 5.5%). Findings from observational studies were mixed, and the lack of controls makes interpretation problematic. Available evidence is insufficient to determine whether obtaining spirometric values and providing that information to patients improves smoking cessation compared with other smoking cessation methods. Spirometric values are of limited benefit as a predictor of smoking cessation or as a tool to "customize" smoking cessation strategies.  相似文献

Geranoyl-CoA carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.4) is a biotin-containing enzyme previously described in two genera of bacteria. Here we report the presence of geranoyl-CoA carboxylase in kingdom Plantae. Geranoyl-CoA carboxylase was purified 180-fold from maize leaves. The enzyme has a biotin-containing subunit of 122 kDa. The pH optimum for activity is 8.3. The apparent Km values for the substrates geranoyl-CoA, bicarbonate, and ATP are 64 +/- 5 microM, 0. 58 +/- 0.04 mM, and 8.4 +/- 0.4 microM, respectively. Subcellular fractionations indicate that geranoyl-CoA carboxylase is located in plastids. Geranoyl-CoA carboxylase activity is ubiquitous in organs of monocots and dicots and varies with development. We postulate that geranoyl-CoA carboxylase plays an important role in isoprenoid catabolism in plants, in a pathway analogous to that shown in Psuedomonas sp. In plants, this catabolic pathway would require the interaction of at least three subcellular compartments (plastids, microbodies, and mitochondria) and two biotin-containing enzymes, geranoyl-CoA carboxylase and 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase.  相似文献
