Sequence-independent recombination triple helices: a molecular dynamics study

The mRNA levels encoding for the two isoforms of glutamate decarboxylase (GAD65 and GAD67) were measured in the adult rat striatum following systemic administration of dopamine receptor agonists. Double-labeling in situ hybridization histochemistry was used to measure GAD65 or GAD67 mRNA levels in neurons labeled or not with a preproenkephalin (PPE) cRNA probe. Chronic treatment with the D1/D2 dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine or with the D1 dopamine receptor agonist SKF-38393 induced an increase in GAD65 but not GAD67 mRNA levels in different sectors of the striatum. These effects were abolished by pre-administration of the D1 dopamine receptor antagonist SCH-23390. On double-labeled sections, GAD65 mRNA labeling was distributed in neurons labeled and unlabeled with the PPE cRNA probe. About half of all neuronal profiles labeled with the GAD65 cRNA probe were also labeled with the PPE cRNA probe. Quantification of labeling at cellular level demonstrated a significant increase of GAD65 mRNA levels in PPE-unlabeled neurons. On the other hand, no significant changes of GAD65 mRNA levels were detected in PPE-labeled neurons. Our results demonstrate a differential effect of dopamine receptor agonists on striatal GAD65 and GAD67 gene expression. In particular, we show that GAD65 mRNA levels are selectively increased in presumed striato-nigral neurons following treatments with dopamine receptor agonists. These data provide evidence that the GAD65 isoform is preferentially involved in the regulation of GABAergic neurotransmission in striato-nigral neurons.     

Sequence variants in the pancreatic islet beta-cell inwardly rectifying K+ channel Kir6.2 (Bir) gene: identification and lack of role in Caucasian patients with NIDDM

The septate gregarine parasites of flour beetles (Tribolium spp.) include Gregarina minuta Ishii, 1914, a relatively small species in which both primite and satellite possess an obvious protomerite, and a larger species that lacks the satellite protomerite. The latter species has been placed in the genera Didymophyes and Hirmocystis by various authors, but studies reported here demonstrate that this species, herein described as Gregarina triboliorum, exhibits early pairing and produces oocyst chains, both characteristics of the genus Gregarina. The oocysts of this new species are described for the first time. In addition, experimental infections using oocyst from single gametocysts reveal that oocyst chain number is variable but is typically 1, 2, or 4. Prior experiments involving a related beetle, Tenebrio molitor, demonstrated extreme host specificity within the 4 Gregarina species parasitizing larval and adult hosts. However, G. triboliorum is not limited either stadially or specially, infecting both adults and larvae of Tribolium confusum and Tribolium castaneum.

Nanomechanical Characterization of Indium Nano/Microwires

Nanomechanical properties of indium nanowires like structures fabricated on quartz substrate by trench template technique, measured using nanoindentation. The hardness and elastic modulus of wires were measured and compared with the values of indium thin film. Displacement burst observed while indenting the nanowire. ‘Wire-only hardness’ obtained using Korsunsky model from composite hardness. Nanowires have exhibited almost same modulus as indium thin film but considerable changes were observed in hardness value.     

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma induced surface modification of polyester/cotton blended fabrics to impart water repellency using HMDSO

Continuous treatment of polyester/cotton blended fabric samples was carried with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) plasma on the pilot scale atmospheric pressure plasma reactor. The mixture of helium and argon was used as carrier gas for generating dielectric barrier discharge plasma. The effect of discharge power and treatment time on the water repellent properties of samples were evaluated with contact angle (CA) and spray test measurements. Spray test and CA results showed improved resistance to wetting with water. The effect of discharge conditions on the surface morphology and surface chemistry of plasma treated samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, respectively. The presence of Si‐O‐Si and Si‐CH₃ groups in the structure of plasma polymer deposited at the surface of P/C samples was revealed by FTIR spectroscopy. Further, structural differences in HMDSO plasma polymer deposited under different discharge conditions were reported with reference to organic/inorganic nature of plasma polymer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Control system design for recycle systems

This paper considers the control system design for recycle systems. We derive a condition which quantifies the effect of recycling on closed-loop performance. The condition is independent of control/controller structure. With insight from this condition, we develop a set of heuristics for properly designing a controller without detailed knowledge of recycle dynamics for the important special case where the system is represented by a first-order-plus-time-delay model and where the IMC tuning rules are used. The heuristics require only a minimal amount of information on the recycle dynamics. Their effectiveness is illustrated on a reactor/feed-effluent heat exchanger/furnace process under various conditions.
