Effect of interlayer interaction in high-T c cuprate superconductors

We have studied the role of interlayer attractive interaction in a high-T _c system having two layers per unit cell. The single band two-layer tight binding model Hamiltonian is considered and the double time Green's function technique is applied within the mean field approximation. The expressions for the hole density, transition temperature, and intra- and interlayer order parameters are obtained which are found to be dependent on the interlayer interaction and other parameters appearing in the Hamiltonian. The numerical analysis shows that the coupling of the charge carriers (holes) between the layers provides better conditions for the stabilization of long-range order and high superconducting transition temperature in layered superconductors. It is also observed that superconductivity is confined to a narrow region of hole concentration and the single particle tunneling suppresses the transition temperature.     

Effect of Interlayer Interaction on the Specific Heat of High-Tc Superconductors

The effect of interlayer interactions on the electronic specific heat of high-T _c layered superconductors has been studied within the framework of the Hirsch model. In the present paper we extend our previous work in order to evaluate the expression for specific heat. It is shown that the inclusion of interlayer interactions suppresses the height of the jump in the specific heat at T _c.     

Diskitis caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans

A 32-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) admitted to the hospital for treatment of visceral leishmaniasis was inadvertently given 10 times the prescribed first dose of sodium stibogluconate ([Sb] 6.5 g instead of 0.65 g). He experienced no immediate major toxicity during the first 48 hours, but a significant rise of pancreatic enzyme activities was observed (amylase at 10 times the upper limit of normal, lipase at 50 times the upper limit of normal) without clinical signs or indications on computed tomography (CT) of pancreatitis. The third day after the overdose, he developed appendicitis, which appeared coincidental; he recovered uneventfully from surgery. Most of the overdose of Sb was eliminated within the first few hours. Pharmacokinetics remained linear; the rapid, long elimination half-lives (2.7 hours and 54 hours, respectively) were similar to those in previously published results. The administration of a chelating agent, dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), 72 hours after the Sb overdose did not modify the pharmacokinetics of the medication.
