The metabolism of carbohydrates by extremely halophilic bacteria: identification of galactonic acid as a product of galactose metabolism

Cell-free extracts prepared from the extremely halophilic bacterium Halobacterium saccharovorum oxidize galactose and accumulate a product which reacts as if it were a lactone. The product does not act as a reducing sugar and contains all six of the carbon atoms initially present in galactose. The product was jugged to be galactonic acid, based on the behavior of the acetylmethyl ester derivative of the product and the pentaacetyl derivative of the galactonic methyl ester during gas chromatography.     

The Detection Statistics of a Molecular-Beam Frequency Standard

The detection statistics of a molecular beam are analyzed, taking into account fluctuations in emission, transition and detection. It is discovered that the over-all process has a Poisson distribution. Because of the nature of this distribution, it is noted that the optimum method of estimating the average number of molecular transitions is by means of a long-time average of the detected current. The degree to which the detector current is a measure of the average number of molecular transitions in the device is established, with a certain minimum confidence, by use of the Tchebycheff Inequality.     

A transportable extendable compiler

This report describes the development of a transportable extendable self-compiler for the language SIMPL-T. SIMPL-T is designed as the base language for a family of languages. The structure of the SIMPL-T compiler and its transportable bootstrap are described. In addition, the procedures for generating a compiler for a new machine and for boot-strapping the new compiler on to the new machine are demonstrated.

Beam indexing is the technique by which the instantaneous position of an electron beam can be obtained during each line scan of a raster based picture. Knowledge of electron beam position allows selective brightening-up of colour phosphors, enabling a full colour picture to be produced using a single electron beam.
