Effect of aluminum on the low temperature properties of relatively high purity ferrite

True stress-strain data on alloys of pure iron with up to 2.4 pct Al were obtained in the temperature range +100° to ?185°C. Aluminum was found to reduce yield and flow stresses of iron at low temperatures but to have little or no effect on ductility. The effects of temperature and composition on strain hardening are discussed.     

The lesbian,gay, bisexual and transgender community online: discussions of bullying and self-disclosure in YouTube videos

Computer-mediated communication has become a popular platform for identity construction and experimentation as well as social interaction for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The creation of user-generated videos has allowed content creators to share experiences on LGBT topics. With bullying becoming more common amongst LGBT youth, it is important to obtain a greater understanding of this phenomenon. In our study, we report on the analysis of 151 YouTube videos which were identified as having LGBT- and bullying-related content. The analysis reveals how content creators openly disclose personal information about themselves and their experiences in a non-anonymous rhetoric with an unknown public. These disclosures could indicate a desire to seek friendship, support and provide empathy.     

A gain and bandwidth enhanced transimpedance preamplifier for Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

The nature of the ion signal from a 12-T Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer and the electronic noise were studied to further understand the electronic detection limit. At minimal cost, a new transimpedance preamplifier was designed, computer simulated, built, and tested. The preamplifier design pushes the electronic signal-to-noise performance at room temperature to the limit, because of its enhanced tolerance of the capacitance of the detection device, lower intrinsic noise, and larger flat mid-band gain (input current noise spectral density of around 1 pA/√Hz when the transimpedance is about 85 dBΩ). The designed preamplifier has a bandwidth of ~3 kHz to 10 MHz, which corresponds to the mass-to-charge ratio, m/z, of approximately 18 to 61 k at 12 T. The transimpedance and the bandwidth can be easily adjusted by changing the value of passive components. The feedback limitation of the circuit is discussed. With the maximum possible transimpedance of 5.3 MΩ when using an 0402 surface mount resistor, the preamplifier was estimated to be able to detect ~110 charges in a single scan.     

(Approximate) Uncertain Skylines

Given a set of points with uncertain locations, we consider the problem of computing the probability of each point lying on the skyline, that is, the probability that it is not dominated by any other input point. If each point’s uncertainty is described as a probability distribution over a discrete set of locations, we improve the best known exact solution. We also suggest why we believe our solution might be optimal. Next, we describe simple, near-linear time approximation algorithms for computing the probability of each point lying on the skyline. In addition, some of our methods can be adapted to construct data structures that can efficiently determine the probability of a query point lying on the skyline.     

Long latency postural reflexes are under supraspinal dopaminergic control

Scaling of posturally stabilizing long latency (LL) reflexes in tibialis anterior muscles induced by "toe-up" rotational perturbations is abnormal in standing patients with Parkinson's disease. To investigate the contribution of dopaminergic pathways to abnormal scaling, we studied LL reflexes in 22 patients with selective hypodopaminergic syndromes: 10 psychiatric patients taking chronic neuroleptic medication (7 with mild parkinsonism), 8 patients with young-onset Parkinson's disease, and 4 patients with MPTP-induced parkinsonism. Results were compared with those of 10 healthy controls. Stimuli consisted of (a) 10 serial (predictable) perturbations of 4 degrees amplitude, (b) 10 serial (predictable) perturbations of 10 degrees amplitude, and (c) 20 randomly mixed (unpredictable) perturbations of either 4 or 10 degrees amplitude. In normal subjects, LL reflex amplitudes were adapted to match predictable variations in stimulus size, whereas under unpredictable conditions a "default" response emerged that anticipated the 10 degrees perturbation. LL reflex scaling under predictable conditions was intact in patients with neuroleptic-induced parkinsonism and young-onset Parkinson's disease, but the large default LL response under unpredictable conditions was absent. In patients with MPTP-induced parkinsonism, LL reflex scaling was absent during both predictable and unpredictable conditions. We conclude that abnormal scaling of posturally stabilizing LL reflexes is related to decreased supraspinal dopaminergic influence.     

Evidence that the modulation of membrane-associated protein kinase C activity by an endogenous inhibitor plays a role in N1E-115 murine neuroblastoma cell differentiation

Murine neuroblastoma cells, N1E-115, were induced to differentiate into neuron-like cells by serum deprivation for 18 h. As previous studies have shown that the suppression of protein kinase C (PKC) activity by selective inhibitors or neutralizing antibodies induces neuroblastoma cells to differentiate, we tested the hypothesis that serum deprivation may cause a rapid loss in membrane PKC activity that occurs well before the morphological changes that are characteristic of cell differentiation. A significant reduction in particulate (membrane) PKC activity was indeed observed within 3 h of serum withdrawal when enzyme activity was measured in intact native membranes by the recently described in vitro "direct" assay. This rapid reduction in enzyme activity was confirmed by the decreased phosphorylation of the MARCKS protein, an endogenous PKC-selective substrate, in intact cells. The decrease in membrane PKC activity occurred without any loss in the amount of membrane-associated enzyme, suggesting that some factor(s) resident in neuroblastoma membranes was suppressing PKC activity. Indeed, results indicate the presence of an endogenous inhibitor of PKC tightly associated with neuroblastoma membranes. This inhibitory activity increased in the membranes of cells subjected to serum deprivation, raising the possibility that it was likely responsible for the decline in membrane PKC activity in differentiating N1E-115 cells. Preliminary characterization indicated that the inhibitory activity is a protein and is localized mainly in the membrane fraction. Thus, these results demonstrate directly that endogenous inhibitor can regulate membrane-associated PKC activity in cells and thereby modulate PKC-related neuronal functions.     

Isolation of yeast artificial chromosomes free of endogenous yeast chromosomes: construction of alternate hosts with defined karyotypic alterations

An intrinsic feature of yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) is that the cloned DNA is generally in the same size range (i.e., approximately 200-2000 kb) as the endogenous yeast chromosomes. As a result, the isolation of YAC DNA, which typically involves separation by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, is frequently confounded by the presence of a comigrating or closely migrating endogenous yeast chromosome(s). We have developed a strategy that reliably allows the isolation of any YAC free of endogenous yeast chromosomes. Using recombination-mediated chromosome fragmentation, a set of Saccharomyces cerevisiae host strains was systematically constructed. Each strain contains defined alterations in its electrophoretic karyotype, which provide a large-size interval devoid of endogenous chromosomes (i.e., a karyotypic "window"). All of the constructed strains contain the kar1-delta 15 mutation, thereby allowing the efficient transfer of a YAC from its original host into an appropriately selected window strain using the kar1-transfer procedure. This approach provides a robust and efficient means to obtain relatively pure YAC DNA regardless of YAC size.

我国正处于制造大国迈向制造强国的重要历史阶段,在绿色发展理念的指导下,如何推进制造业与生态环境的协调发展,促进工业文明与生态文明和谐共生,是当前亟待解决的现实问题。绿色制造是制造强国建设的必有之意,是生产方式转变的重要着力点,更是绿色发展的重要组成部分,涵盖了低碳发展和循环发展的全部内容。本文在明晰绿色制造与生态文明建设关系的基础上,深入阐述了绿色制造的科学内涵、目标和评价体系,基于我国绿色制造已取得的成绩和现实发展困境,提出了推进我国绿色制造的战略方向,最后从顶层设计、队伍建设、创新体系、服务平台、体制机制及国际合作等方面给出了政策建议。
