The increasing number of Wi-Fi-compatible mobile devices highlights various wireless access challenges, including the need for smooth hand offs between Internet attachment points in mobile IPv6 networks. To confirm address uniqueness in a new domain, mobile nodes must run duplicate address detection (DAD), which is a time-consuming process. The Proactive DAD approach uses topology information and layer-2 signals to predict the new network domains prior to or in parallel with layer-3 hand offs. The perception and discrimination of rapidly changing texture stimuli by pigeons was examined in a target localization task. Five experienced pigeons were rewarded for finding and pecking at a randomly placed odd target block of small repeated elements embedded in a larger rectangular array of contrasting distractor elements. On dynamic color test trials, the color of the target, distractor, or both of these regions changed at rates of 100, 250, 500, or 1000 ms per frame. The number of colors appearing within such trials also varied. Pigeons performed well above chance in all test conditions, with target-associated changes producing the best discrimination. The results suggest: (a) global relational information can exclusively guide target localization behavior, (b) pigeons can perceptually group and segregate colored textured differences quite rapidly (< or = 100 ms), and (c) pigeons may possess automatic search control processes that can be captured by stimulus-driven changes in the display.  相似文献

The interferon (IFN)-induced, double stranded RNA (dsRNA)-activated serine/threonine kinase, PKR, is a potent negative regulator of cell growth when overexpressed in yeast or mammalian cells. To determine whether endogenous PKR plays a role in cell growth control, we have investigated the regulation of PKR levels and activity during the cell cycle in human glioblastoma T98G cells. The steady-state level of PKR mRNA in T98G cells was highest in growth arrested cells, dropped sharply within 3 h of serum stimulation then gradually increased as cells progressed through G1, reaching a plateau in early S phase. PKR protein level increased following serum stimulation reaching a peak at the G2+M boundary and declining thereafter. In contrast, PKR kinase activity exhibited two peaks, in early G1 and at the G1/S boundary, declining sharply in early S phase. Thus, the activity profile did not follow the protein profile indicating a tight regulation of PKR at the level of activity. In T98G cells expressing the catalytically inactive PKRK296R the dsRNA-induced activation of NF-kappaB and IRF-1 was suppressed and the mutant cells exhibited resistance to stress induced apoptosis. Cell cycle distribution analysis showed that the mutant expressing cells exhibited longer G1 phase and fewer cells engaged in S phase. Furthermore, early passage mouse embryo fibroblasts derived from PKR knockout mice grew more slowly compared with the control cells. Taken together these results suggest that PKR may play a role in cell cycle progression.  相似文献

Certain monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against CD4 can efficiently block HIV-1 replication in vitro. To explore CD4-directed passive immunotherapy for prevention or treatment of AIDS virus infection, we previously examined the biological activity of a nondepleting CD4-specific murine MAb, mu5A8. This MAb, specific for domain 2 of CD4, blocks HIV-1 replication at a post-gp120-CD4 binding step. When administered to normal rhesus monkeys, all CD4+ target cells were coated with antibody, yet no cell clearance or measurable immunosuppression occurred. However, strong anti-mouse Ig responses rapidly developed in all monkeys. In the present study, we report a successfully humanized form of mu5A8 (hu5A8) that retains binding to both human and monkey CD4 and anti-AIDS virus activity. When administered intravenously to normal rhesus monkeys, hu5A8 bound to all target CD4+ cells without depletion and showed a significantly longer plasma half-life than mu5A8. Nevertheless, an anti-hu5A8 response directed predominantly against V region determinants did eventually appear within 2 to 4 weeks in most animals. However, when hu5A8 was administered to rhesus monkeys chronically infected with the simian immunodeficiency virus of macaques, anti-hu5A8 antibodies were not detected. Repeated administration of hu5A8 in these animals resulted in sustained plasma levels and CD4+ cell coating with humanized antibody for 6 weeks. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of chronic administration of CD4-specific MAb as a potential means of treating or preventing HIV-1 infection.  相似文献

The intent of a binomial effect size display (BESD) is to show "the [real-world] importance of [an] effect indexed by a correlation [r]" (R. Rosenthal, 1994, p. 242) by reexpressing this correlation as a success rate difference (SRD) (e.g., treatment group success rate - control group success rate). However, SRDs displayed in BESDs generally overestimate real-world SRDs implied by correlations of (a) dichotomous X and Y variables (φ coefficients), (b) dichotomous X and continuous Y variables (point-biserial coefficients [rphs]). and (c) continuous X and Y variables (rxys). Furthermore, overestimation biases are larger for rxys than for rphs. Differences in the sizes of biases linked to different correlations suggest that BESD SRDs reported for different correlations are not comparable. The stochastic difference index (N. Cliff, 1993: A. A comparison is made between in vitro and human and rat in vivo methods for estimating food iron availability. Complex meals formulated to replicate meals used by Cook and Monsen (Am J Clin Nutr 1976;29:859) in human iron availability trials were used in the comparison. The meals were prepared by substituting pork, fish, cheese, egg, liver, or chicken for beef in two basic test meals and were evaluated for iron availability using in vitro and rat in vivo methods. When the criterion for comparison was the ability to show statistically significant differences between iron availability in the various meals, there was substantial agreement between the in vitro and human in vivo methods. There was less agreement between the human in vivo and the rat in vivo and between the in vivo and the rat in vivo and between the in vitro and the rat in vivo methods. Correlation analysis indicated significant agreement between in vitro and human in vivo methods. Correlation between the rat in vivo and human in vivo methods were also significant but correlations between the in vitro and rat in vivo methods were less significant and, in some cases, not significant. The comparison supports the contention that the in vitro method allows a rapid, inexpensive, and accurate estimation of nonheme iron availability in complex meals.  相似文献

The shape memory effect (SME), superelasticity (SE), and cyclic deformation behavior of two-phase α/β brasses have been investigated at various temperatures, using tensile tests andin situ optical microscopic observations. The morphology and characteristics of the (thermoelastic) martensitic transformation and the mechanism of the SME are similar to those for single-phase β-brass, but the amount of irrecoverable strain is larger in the two-phase alloys due to plastic deformation of the α particles. After unloading and heating, the slipbands in the discrete a particles remain, whereas the martensite almost disappears; thus, the higher the volume fraction of α particles, the larger the amount of irrecoverable strain. The deformation behavior of alloy A at temperatures above the martensite start (Ms) temperature (with 26 pct α phase) is dominated by deformation of the α phase, so complete SE cannot be obtained after cyclic deformation, both at room temperature and at -40 °C. While in alloy B (containing 15 pct α phase), the deformation behavior is dominated by the formation of stress-induced martensite (SIM). The α particles are deformed before SIM formation on loading at room temperature, but on the contrary, SIM forms before the α particles are deformed on loading at -40 °C (>Ms). Complete SE can be obtained in alloy B after cyclic deformation at room temperature to a given strain but does not occur at -40 °C because the a particles are deformed along with the growth of pre-existing SIM under larger strain during cycling at this temperature.  相似文献
