The paper presents a graphical approach to decide on the appropriateness of a mixture of 2 Weibull distributions to model a given failure data set. It involves plotting the data on Weibull paper. The plots are completely characterized and the parameters estimated for various cases. Two examples involving real data illustrate the usefulness of the approach. The macula is a constituent of the sensory retina that is necessary for sharp contrast and color vision. A significant relationship has been found between tobacco smoking and age-related macular degeneration. Opsin, rhodopsin and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) are located in excitable membranes of retina which are enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A question may arise as to whether nicotine and its major metabolite cotinine influence PLA2 so that arachidonic acid (AA) and proinflammatory prostaglandins (PG) are produced in the retina. Therefore, the effects of nicotine and cotinine on the retinal PLA2 were studied. PLA2 activity of rat retinal sonicates was assayed using 1-palmitoyl-2[1-14C]arachidonyl-Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE, 2.2 nmol) as a substrate in Tris buffer (10 mM, pH 7.4) at 37 degrees C with and without nicotine or cotinine in the assay medium. These studies gave the following results: (1) Rat retinal PLA2 activity was 4.2+/-0.8 pmol PE hydrolyzed/100 ng protein/hr. (2) Nicotine in low concentrations (1-150 nM) activated PLA2 (EC50 5 nM). (3) Cotinine also activated PLA2 (EC50 300 nM). (4) Only high concentrations of nicotine (> 1.0 microM) and cotinine (> 25 microM) exhibit inhibition of PLA2. (5) All three known PLA2 inhibitors, mepacrine, 4-bromophenacyl bromide and bromoacetylcholine bromide (IC50: 0.5mM, 88 microM, 30 mM, respectively) inhibited retinal PLA2 activity. These observations suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acids are cleaved, and arachidonic acid, the precursor for prostaglandins and related pro-inflammatory mediators, is liberated by nicotine and cotinine. Oxidative stress (reduced levels of antioxidants), vascular insufficiency, as well as activation of PLA2 by nicotine and cotinine may contribute for retinal degeneration in smokers during aging.  相似文献

The composition of the plate in lead acid battery plays a vital role on battery performance. Therefore, controlling and monitoring of plate composition is utmost important in order to attain required battery performance. While monitoring negative plate, it has to be ensured that they are not exposed to air, which would otherwise result in Pb oxidation; thereby affecting the accuracy of the test data. Nevertheless, published information is scarce on the “pretreatment and preservation of the negative plates”. The objective of this study is to develop a suitable procedure to “preserve and pretreat the negative plate” prior to chemical composition analysis. A host of experimental parameters like immersion time in water, effect of drying reagent and air drying time were studied. The fabrication and performance of a parallel feed travelling wave photodetector with pin diodes operating at 1550 nm is presented. A parallel optical feed using an integrated multimode interference (MMI) power splitter helps increase the maximum linear photocurrent through a more uniform distribution of photocurrent. Characteristics of Mobile Ad hoc Networks such as shared broadcast channel, bandwidth and battery power limitations, highly dynamic topology, and location dependent errors, make provisioning of quality of service (QoS) in such networks very difficult. The Medium Access Control (MAC) layer plays a very important role as far as QoS is concerned. The MAC layer is responsible for selecting the next packet to be transmitted and the timing of its transmission. We have proposed a new MAC layer protocol that includes a laxity-based priority scheduling scheme and an associated back-off scheme, for supporting time-sensitive traffic. In the proposed scheduling scheme, we select the next packet to be transmitted, based on its priority value which takes into consideration the uniform laxity budget of the packet, the current packet delivery ratio of the flow to which the packet belongs, and the packet delivery ratio desired by the user. The back-off mechanism devised by us grants a node access to the channel, based on the rank of its highest priority packet in comparison to other such packets queued at nodes in the neighborhood of the current node. We have studied the performance of our protocol that combines a packet scheduling scheme and a channel access scheme through simulation experiments, and the simulation results show that our protocol exhibits a significant improvement in packet delivery ratio under bounded end-to-end delay requirements, compared to the existing 802.11 DCF and the Distributed Priority Scheduling scheme proposed recently in [ACM Wireless Networks Journal 8 (5) (2002) 455–466; Proceedings of ACM MOBICOM '01, July 2001, pp. 200–209].  相似文献

A 90-nm logic technology featuring strained-silicon   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
A leading-edge 90-nm technology with 1.2-nm physical gate oxide, 45-nm gate length, strained silicon, NiSi, seven layers of Cu interconnects, and low-/spl kappa/ CDO for high-performance dense logic is presented. Strained silicon is used to increase saturated n-type and p-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) drive currents by 10% and 25%, respectively. Using selective epitaxial Si/sub 1-x/Ge/sub x/ in the source and drain regions, longitudinal uniaxial compressive stress is introduced into the p-type MOSEFT to increase hole mobility by >50%. A tensile silicon nitride-capping layer is used to introduce tensile strain into the n-type MOSFET and enhance electron mobility by 20%. Unlike all past strained-Si work, the hole mobility enhancement in this paper is present at large vertical electric fields in nanoscale transistors making this strain technique useful for advanced logic technologies. Furthermore, using piezoresistance coefficients it is shown that significantly less strain (/spl sim/5 /spl times/) is needed for a given PMOS mobility enhancement when applied via longitudinal uniaxial compression versus in-plane biaxial tension using the conventional Si/sub 1-x/Ge/sub x/ substrate approach.  相似文献

The desiccant assisted air-conditioners yield lower humidities in the conditioned space compared to the conventional systems. In this paper, the effects of design variables of the air-conditioner, namely supply airflow rate, compressor pumping capacity (compressor speed) and desiccant wheel speed on its performance are studied. It is found that an optimum wheel speed of about 17.5 rph exists at which both moisture removal capacity and COP are maximum.  相似文献

Bone mineral of spine, femur, tibia, forearm, calcaneus, hand, and foot was studied on nine volunteers by quantitative computed tomography, neutron activation analysis, single and dual photon absorptiometry during and after long-term hypokinesia. Conditions of long-term space flight were simulated using a 370-day antiorthostatic hypokinesia test. It is shown that the highest mineral losses occur in foot bones including calcaneus. Remedial measures undertaken delay the process of osteoporosis development but do not completely exclude it. The results obtained by different methods are often conflicting. Consequently, the accuracy of the in vivo methods for bone mineral determination must be more thoroughly studied.  相似文献
