The effect of increasing lamellar thickness in bulk polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) by various methods (annealing and increasing time and temperature of crystallisation) on the parameters of the and relaxations has been studied.For the a relaxation consistent increase in temperature of maximum loss and activation energy with increasing lamellar thickness confirms the strong suggestion of earlier work [6] on oriented specimens and shows that the relaxation arises mainly in the interior of the lamellae with little contribution from the chain folds.No systematic changes in these parameters with increasing lamellar thickness was found for the relaxation and this is explained by the presence of
c and
a components in crystalline and amorphous regions respectively. The component

Biochemical processes and structural changes that occur in muscle during the first 24h postmortem play a great role in the ultimate quality and palatability of meat and are influenced by the chilling processes that carcasses are subjected to after slaughter. For beef and lamb, employing chilling parameters that minimize cold shortening is of greatest importance and can be best addressed by ensuring that muscle temperatures are not below 10°C before pH reaches 6.2. For pork, because of the impact of high muscle temperatures and low pH on the development of pale, soft, and exudative (PSE) pork, a more rapid chilling process is needed to reduce PSE with the recommended internal muscle temperature of 10°C at 12h and 2-4°C at 24h. Spray chilling, a system whereby chilled water is applied to carcasses during the early part of postmortem cooling, is used to control carcass shrinkage and to improve chilling rates through evaporative cooling. Delayed chilling can be used to reduce or prevent the negative effects of cold shortening; however, production constraints in high-volume facilities and food safety concerns make this method less useful in commercial settings. Electrical stimulation and alternative carcass suspension programs offer processors the opportunity to negate most or all of the effects of cold shortening while still using traditional chilling systems. Rapid or blast chilling can be an effective method to reduce the incidence of PSE in pork but extreme chilling systems may cause quality problems because of the differential between the cold temperatures on the outside of the carcass compared to the warm muscle temperatures within the carcass (i.e., muscles that are darker in color externally and lighter in color internally). 相似文献

The human endometrium acquires the ability to implant the developing embryo within a specific time window that is thought to open between days 19-24 of the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. During this period the endometrium undergoes pronounced structural and functional changes induced by the ovarian steroids, estrogen and progesterone, that prepare it to be receptive to invasion by the embryo. The identification of reliable biochemical markers to assess this critical receptive phase in the context of the natural cycle remains one of the major challenges in the study of human reproduction. Our previous studies in a rat model system demonstrated that the expression of calcitonin, a peptide hormone involved in calcium homeostasis, is transiently induced by progesterone in the glandular epithelium at the onset of implantation. Attenuation of calcitonin synthesis in the uterus during the preimplantation phase by administration of calcitonin antisense oligodeoxynucleotides severely impairs implantation of rat embryos, suggesting that this peptide hormone plays a critical role in uterine receptivity. To investigate whether calcitonin is also expressed in the human endometrium during implantation, we monitored the spatio-temporal expression of calcitonin on various days of the menstrual cycle. Our studies employing RT-PCR showed that calcitonin messenger ribonucleic acid is expressed in human endometrium during the postovulatory midsecretory phase (days 17-25) of the menstrual cycle, with maximal expression occurring between days 19-21. Very little calcitonin expression was detected in the endometrium in either the preovulatory proliferative (days 5-14) or the late secretory (days 26-28) phase. In situ hybridization and immunocytochemical analyses localized the calcitonin expression predominantly in the glandular epithelial cells of the endometrium. Our studies further showed that calcitonin expression in the human endometrium is under progesterone regulation. Treatment of women with an antiprogestin, mifepristone (RU-486), drastically reduced calcitonin expression in the endometrium. Collectively, these findings reveal that progesterone-induced expression of calcitonin in the secretory endometrium temporally coincides with the putative window of implantation in the human. 相似文献

Abstract. We exploit the gap in ability between human and machine vision systems to craft a family of automatic challenges that tell
human and machine users apart via graphical interfaces including Internet browsers. Turing proposed [Tur50] a method whereby
human judges might validate “artificial intelligence” by failing to distinguish between human and machine interlocutors. Stimulated
by the “chat room problem” posed by Udi Manber of Yahoo!, and influenced by the CAPTCHA project [BAL00] of Manuel Blum et
al. of Carnegie-Mellon Univ., we propose a variant of the Turing test using pessimal print: that is, low-quality images of machine-printed text synthesized pseudo-randomly over certain ranges of words, typefaces,
and image degradations. We show experimentally that judicious choice of these ranges can ensure that the images are legible
to human readers but illegible to several of the best present-day optical character recognition (OCR) machines. Our approach
is motivated by a decade of research on performance evaluation of OCR machines [RJN96,RNN99] and on quantitative stochastic
models of document image quality [Bai92,Kan96]. The slow pace of evolution of OCR and other species of machine vision over
many decades [NS96,Pav00] suggests that pessimal print will defy automated attack for many years. Applications include `bot'
barriers and database rationing.

An application of a cascaded Clarke-Gawthrop self tuning regulator (STR) to a Karr liquid-liquid solvent extraction column is presented. The Karr column, a reciprocating plate column, exhibits nonlinear asymmetric responses which are complex functions of the operating conditions and requires adaptive control in order to prevent instability. The outer loop of this cascade scheme controls the extract concentration of the continuous phase while the inner loop controls the hydrodynamic holdup in the column and prevents flooding. The manipulated variable was the frequency of reciprocation. The STR-STR cascade arrangement is compared with a fixed parameter Proportional plus Integral (PI) controller in the outer loop and an STR in the inner loop. 相似文献

By the age of 18, between 16 and 27% of adolescents in the U.S. have been arrested for an offense and by the age of 23 this increases to a staggering 25–41%. Most youth that get into legal trouble have a substance abuse problem and many youth report high risk driving behaviors. Adjudication of adolescents for an offense may provide an opportunity to provide a secondary prevention program for such high risk behaviors. In this regard the primary aim of the present study was to test two hypotheses: (1) that interventions involving group motivational interviewing would decrease future legal charges beyond those achieved by the combination of sanctions and remedial actions otherwise mandated by the court; and (2) that the addition of a trauma room exposure to the group MI intervention would increase the effectiveness of MI in decreasing these future legal charges. 相似文献

The effects of block length and solution-casting conditions on the final microstructures and properties of disulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymer (BPSH100-BPS0) films for proton exchange membranes were investigated based on the basic principles of microstructure formation of block copolymers. Morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering demonstrated that as the block length increased, the inter-ionic-domain distance increased, with a subsequent increase in lamellar ordering and long-range continuity. Further enhancement in morphological order was achieved by simply utilizing a selective solvent, dimethylacetamide, which is good and marginal for the sulfonated and unsulfonated blocks, respectively, rather than a neutral solvent, N-metyl-2-pyrrolidone. These morphological enhancements led to higher proton conductivity and water uptake. Drying temperature and/or solvent removal rate were observed to have considerable effects on water uptake and swelling behavior, being coupled with solvent selectivity. Also, the multiblock copolymer consisting of longer blocks was found to be more sensitive to the variation of the processing conditions such as solvent type and film drying temperature. 相似文献

US Choice (Ch) and US Select (Se) beef subprimals from the rib, chuck, plate, loin, and round were obtained to conduct retail cutting tests. Subprimals were merchandised into bone-in or boneless retail cuts and associated components by experienced retail meat merchandisers. These Se subprimals had less (P<0.05) trimmable fat than their Ch counterparts: ball tip, top sirloin, outside round, inside round, and ribeye. Se inside rounds, outside rounds, eye of rounds, boneless striploins, and ball tips had greater (P<0.05) purge losses than the same cuts from Ch. The only subprimals where grade impacted total saleable yield were the top (inside) rounds (Ch=80.13%, Se=87.34%; P=0.004) and outside rounds cut into roasts, steaks, and cubed steaks (Ch=87.61%, Se=90.28%; P=0.05). Methods to increase retail yields from beef subprimals should consider minimizing purge and increasing cutting efficiencies in addition to reducing fat trim. 相似文献
