Helmets significantly decrease morbidity and mortality from motorcycle crashes, but many areas of the world lack universal helmet laws. To educate motorcyclists in areas without helmet laws, more knowledge of motorcyclists’ helmet beliefs is needed.A web-based survey was therefore designed to assess motorcyclists’ attitudes, norms and behaviors towards helmets in a U.S. state with a limited helmet law. Of 445 survey respondents, 68.4% of respondents reported always wearing a helmet. The not-always-helmeted riders were more likely than the always-helmeted to be male; to bave less education; and to have a history of previous motorcycle crashes and injuries. Although both groups had taken rider training classes, fewer of the not-always-helmeted had learned how to ride in a class. The strongest correlates of being not-always-helmeted (vs. always-helmeted) were attitudes that helmets were not protective and impaired sight/hearing; and the normative belief that they would only wear helmets if forced by law. Because attitudes are often more easily changed than normative beliefs, education may increase helmet use. However, less than half of riders in this state with a mandatory education program learned how to ride from a rider education course, and 44% of non-helmeted said they would only wear a helmet if forced by law. Legislation may therefore be a more efficient and effective strategy than education to increase helmet use.  相似文献

A piezoelectric, flexural-disk accelerometer for underwater use is composed of two PZT-5A lead zirconate-titanate disks that are bonded to an aluminum substrate. The substrate is edge-supported inside an aluminum housing. The housing is enclosed in syntactic foam so that the sensor is neutrally buoyant. The overall height is 1.0 in. (26 mm), the overall diameter is 1.9 in. (49 mm), and the total mass is 0.054 kg. With 25 ft (7.6 m) of (230 pF/m) cable attached, the sensitivity is -42 dB re 1 V-s(2)/m (-22 dB re 1 V/g), the capacitance is 5.0 nF, and the resonance frequency is 11 kHz. When used in conjuction with a Micro Networks MN3210 preamplifier, the spectral noise-equivalent acceleration floor is approximately -171 dB re 1 m/s(2)- radicalHz (-151 dB re 1 g/ radicalHz) at 5 kHz.  相似文献

In the investigation of ischemic stroke, conventional structural magnetic resonance (MR) techniques (e.g., T1-weighted imaging, T2-weighted imaging, and proton density-weighted imaging) are valuable for the assessment of infarct extent and location beyond the first 12 to 24 hours after onset, and can be combined with MR angiography to noninvasively assess the intracranial and extracranial vasculature. However, during the critical first 6 to 12 hours, the probable period of greatest therapeutic opportunity, these methods do not adequately assess the extent and severity of ischemia. Recent developments in functional MR imaging are showing great promise for the detection of developing focal cerebral ischemic lesions within the first hours. These include (1) diffusion-weighted imaging, which provides physiologic information about the self-diffusion of water, thereby detecting one of the first elements in the pathophysiologic cascade leading to ischemic injury; and (2) perfusion imaging. The detection of acute intraparenchymal hemorrhagic stroke by susceptibility weighted MR has also been reported. In combination with MR angiography, these methods may allow the detection of the site, extent, mechanism, and tissue viability of acute stroke lesions in one imaging study. Imaging of cerebral metabolites with MR spectroscopy along with diffusion-weighted imaging and perfusion imaging may also provide new insights into ischemic stroke pathophysiology. In light of these advances in structural and functional MR, their potential uses in the study of the cerebral ischemic pathophysiology and in clinical practice are described, along with their advantages and limitations.  相似文献

How has managed care impacted the independent practice of psychology? The present article reports on data from 2 national surveys (from 1996 and 2001) that address this question. Both surveys indicated that managed care was a source of stress, with external constraints, paperwork, and managed care reimbursement being the most highly rated stresses. These stresses had not increased in the 5 years between surveys, and the most recent survey suggested that, overall, psychologists did not report high levels of burnout. However, in contrast to respondents with low managed care involvement, respondents with high managed care caseloads worked longer hours, had more client contact, received less supervision, reported more negative client behaviors, experienced more stress, were less satisfied with their incomes, and scored higher on emotional exhaustion. Trained individual honeybees (Apis mellifera) to feed to repletion from a well of sucrose solution so constructed that shock could be delivered when the proboscis was in contact with the solution. If shock was signaled by vibration of the substrate or by an airstream, the animals learned readily to avoid it by breaking contact briefly, but there was no response to change (either constant or time-varying) in the ambient magnetic field. When, however, a magnetic field anomaly in the region of the food well signaled to flying animals that contact would be punished with shock, hesitation to settle was greater in presence than absence of the anomaly. Parallel results were obtained with light, to which flying Ss clearly responded but to which stationary Ss hardly responded at all. In describing academic attainment in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), results are typically reported at the group mean level. This may mask subgroups of individuals for whom academic achievement is incommensurate with intellectual ability. The authors tested the IQ, literacy, and mathematical abilities of a large group (N = 100) of adolescents (14–16 years old) with ASD. Seventy-three percent of the sample had at least one area of literacy or mathematical achievement that was highly discrepant (approximately 14 standard score points) from full-scale IQ (FSIQ). The authors focused on four subgroups with either word reading (“Reading Peak” and “Reading Dip”) or arithmetic (“Arithmetic Peak” and “Arithmetic Dip”) higher or lower than FSIQ. These subgroups were largely mutually exclusive and were characterized by distinct intellectual profiles. The largest was the “Arithmetic Peak” subgroup of participants, who presented with average intellectual ability alongside superior arithmetic skills and who were predominantly in a mainstream educational setting. Overall, the most pervasive profile was discrepantly poor reading comprehension, which associated with severity of social and communication difficulties. Many obstacles to progress in image pattern recognition result from the fact that per-class distributions are often too irregular to be well-approximated by simple analytical functions. Simulation studies offer one way to circumvent these obstacles. We present three closely related studies of machine-printed character recognition that rely on synthetic data generated pseudo-randomly in accordance with an explicit stochastic model of document image degradations. The unusually large scale of experiments - involving several million samples that makes this methodology possible have allowed us to compute sharp estimates of the intrinsic difficulty (Bayes risk) of concrete image recognition problems, as well as the asymptotic accuracy and domain of competency of classifiers  相似文献

An intelligent control and decision-making (ICD) approach that integrates expert systems technology with adaptive algorithms is presented. The controller parameters of adaptive systems can be determined using human expertise and knowledge, and they can also be adjusted based on active monitoring and identification. Decision-making, fine tuning and inexact reasoning provide the end-user and the control engineers with a natural and integrated methodology for use with intelligent control systems. Computer simulation results demonstrate the utility of the proposed technique that is an effective intelligent control and decision approach. The ICD system is implemented using a Lisp based expert system shell on an IBM PC.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cell-permeable small molecules that target predetermined DNA sequences with high affinity and specificity have the potential to control gene expression. A binary code has been developed to correlate DNA sequence with side-by-side pairings between N-methylpyrrole (Py) and N-methylimidazole (Im) carboxamides in the DNA minor groove. We set out to determine the relative energetics of pairings of Im/Py, Py/Im, Im/Im, and Py/Py for targeting G.C and A.T base pairs. A key specificity issue, which has not been previously addressed, is whether an Im/Im pair is energetically equivalent to an Im/Py pair for targeting G.C base pairs. RESULTS: Equilibrium association constants were determined at two five-base-pair sites for a series of four six-ring hairpin polyamides, in order to test the relative energetics of the four aromatic amino-acid pairings opposite G.C and A.T base pairs in the central position. We observed that a G.C base pair was effectively targeted with Im/Py but not Py/Im, Py/Py, or Im/Im. The A.T base pair was effectively targeted with Py/Py but not Im/Py, Py/Im, or Im/Im. CONCLUSIONS: An Im/Im pairing is energetically disfavored for the recognition of both A.T and G.C. This specificity will create important limitations on undesirable slipped motifs that are available for unlinked dimers in the minor groove. Baseline energetic parameters will thus be created which, using the predictability of the current pairing rules for specific molecular recognition of double-helical DNA, will guide further second-generation polyamide design for DNA recognition.  相似文献
