Spectral estimation is a major component in studies aiming at characterizing biological tissues through the analysis of backscattered radio frequency (RF) ultrasonic signals and images. However, conventional spectral estimation techniques yield a well-known trade-off between spatial resolution and variance. The backscattered signals are stochastic by nature, so short-term local analysis results in a high variance of the estimates, which cannot efficiently be reduced through conventional spatial averaging. We address this issue by describing a spectral estimation technique that reduces the variance of the estimates (by smoothing the local estimates in spectrally homogeneous regions) while preserving spectral discontinuities (i.e., the smoothing is not performed across regions with different spectral contents). The proposed approach is set in a Bayesian framework and is based on local autoregressive (AR) estimation, constrained by smoothness priors. These smoothness priors are introduced through a Markov random field in which the associated potential functions are nonquadratic, allowing thereby to preserve discontinuity. The method is validated on simulated RF images and tested on echocardiographic images acquired in vivo. The results are compared to the estimates provided by the conventional Burg technique. These results clearly demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach to improve spectral estimation in terms of variance reduction and discontinuity detection.  相似文献

Exploration of information content of features that are present in images has led to the development of several reconstruction algorithms. These algorithms aim for a reconstruction from the features that is visually close to the image from which the features are extracted. Degrees of freedom that are not fixed by the constraints are disambiguated with the help of a so-called prior (i.e. a user defined model). We propose a linear reconstruction framework that generalizes a previously proposed scheme. The algorithm greatly reduces the complexity of the reconstruction process compared to non-linear methods. As an example we propose a specific prior and apply it to the reconstruction from singular points. The reconstruction is visually more attractive and has a smaller 핃2-error than the reconstructions obtained by previously proposed linear methods. Bart Jansen, Frans Kanters and Remco Duits are joint main authors of this article.  相似文献

State estimation problems for linear time-invariant systems with noisy inputs and outputs are considered. An efficient recursive algorithm for the smoothing problem is presented. The equivalence between the optimal filter and an appropriately modified Kalman filter is established. The optimal estimate of the input signal is derived from the optimal state estimate. The result shows that the noisy input/output filtering problem is not fundamentally different from the classical Kalman filtering problem.  相似文献

The fact that a lot of applications require secure communication to take place only between a dynamic subset of distributed devices sharing a common context, is, from a network point of view, very challenging and demanding. Existing technologies such as VPN, P2P overlays or VLANs can only partially respond to these requirements. This observation is the key factor that has driven the proposal of the virtual private ad hoc network concept. Virtual private ad hoc networks (VPAN) are secure and self-organizing overlay networks on top of existing IP infrastructure that use ad hoc networking techniques to enable network connectivity. The underlying IP infrastructure can be the Internet, cellular networks, ad hoc networks, mesh networks … or combinations thereof. A virtual private ad hoc overlay network creates a transparent, shielded and trusted environment for the applications and services running on the participants' devices. The overlay uses internal addressing and ad hoc routing, thereby forming a virtual network on top of the physical infrastructure. In addition, the overlay must be self-organizing and self-maintaining upon member mobility or membership changes. This paper gives an overview of the potential applications, a high-level network architecture and the network challenges emerging from the novel concept of virtual private ad hoc networking. A Scalable Architecture for MPEG-4 Wavelet Quantization   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Wavelet-based image compression has been adopted in MPEG-4 for visual texture coding. All wavelet quantization schemes in MPEG-4—Single Quantization (SQ), Multiple Quantization (MQ) and Bi-level Quantization—use Embedded Zero Tree (EZT) coding followed by an adaptive arithmetic coder for the compression and quantization of a wavelet image. This paper presents the OZONE chip, a dedicated hardware coprocessor for EZT and arithmetic coding. Realized in a 0.5 m CMOS technology and operating at 32 MHz, the EZT coder is capable of processing up to 25.6 Mega pixel-bitplanes per second. This is equivalent to the lossless compression of 31.6 8-bit grayscale CIF images (352 × 288) per second. The adaptive arithmetic coder processes up to 10 Mbit per second. The combination of the performance of the EZT coder and the arithmetic coder allows the OZONE to perform visual-lossless compression of more than 30 CIF images per second. Due to its novel and scalable architecture, parallel operation of multiple OZONEs is supported. The OZONE functionality is demonstrated on a PC-based compression system.  相似文献

In this study, the acute copper sensitivity of field-collected cladoceran species was determined using their natural surface waters and a standard reconstituted test water as test medium. A total of 43 species were collected on two occasions from six different sites, representing different water types and chemistries in Europe. The collected species belonged to four different families (Daphniidae, Bosminidae, Macrothricidae, Chydoridae) and 11 different genera (Daphnia, Ctenodaphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Simocephalus, Scapholeberis, Alona, Acroperus, Chydorus, Eurycercus, Disparalona, Pleuroxus). In acute experiments with immobilization as end point, the 48-h median effective concentrations (48-h EC50) for the cladoceran species ranged from 5.30 to 70.6 microg of Cu L(-1) in standard test water and from 9.60 to 853 microg of Cu L(-1) in natural waters. The mean site sensitivity (the geometric mean of 48-h EC50 values of species within a community) ranged from 10.1 to 27.4 microg of Cu L(-1) in standard water and from 16.4 to 281 microg of Cu L(-1) in natural water. This indicates that bioavailability is more importantthan inter-community (species composition) differences in determining the variability of copper toxicity across different aquatic systems. For the four surface waters that had a pH within the range for which the acute Daphnia magna biotic ligand model (BLM) has previously been successfully validated, the BLM predicted 48-h EC50 values for 27 of the 28 tested cladoceran species within factor of 2 of the observed values. For the same sites, all community sensitivities were predicted within a factor of 2.3. The BLM was clearly over-protective for the two acidic surface waters tested. Hence, the BLM can be considered a valuable tool for estimating the potentially harmful effects of copperto natural cladoceran communities, but more research will be needed for acidic surface waters.  相似文献

Stroke is a leading cause of disability in particular affecting older people. Although the causes of stroke are well known and it is possible to reduce these risks, there is still a need to improve rehabilitation techniques. Early studies in the literature suggest that early intensive therapies can enhance a patient's recovery. According to physiotherapy literature, attention and motivation are key factors for motor relearning following stroke. Machine mediated therapy offers the potential to improve the outcome of stroke patients engaged on rehabilitation for upper limb motor impairment. Haptic interfaces are a particular group of robots that are attractive due to their ability to safely interact with humans. They can enhance traditional therapy tools, provide therapy on demand and can present accurate objective measurements of a patient's progression. Our recent studies suggest the use of tele-presence and VR-based systems can potentially motivate patients to exercise for longer periods of time. The creation of human-like trajectories is essential for retraining upper limb movements of people that have lost manipulation functions following stroke. By coupling models for human arm movement with haptic interfaces and VR technology it is possible to create a new class of robot mediated neuro rehabilitation tools. This paper provides an overview on different approaches to robot mediated therapy and describes a system based on haptics and virtual reality visualisation techniques, where particular emphasis is given to different control strategies for interaction derived from minimum jerk theory and the aid of virtual and mixed reality based exercises.  相似文献

Starting with the aim of modernizing legacy systems, often written in old programming languages, reverse engineering has extended its applicability to virtually every kind of software system. Moreover, the methods originally designed to recover a diagrammatic, high-level view of the target system have been extended to address several other problems faced by programmers when they need to understand and modify existing software. The authors’ position is that the next stage of development for this discipline will necessarily be based on empirical evaluation of methods. In fact, this evaluation is required to gain knowledge about the actual effects of applying a given approach, as well as to convince the end users of the positive cost–benefit trade offs. The contribution of this paper to the state of the art is a roadmap for the future research in the field, which includes: clarifying the scope of investigation, defining a reference taxonomy, and adopting a common framework for the execution of the experiments.  相似文献
